yep a catchy title and most of u young ladies have never seen the original sack ex in action back in the day. let me tell u it was one of the most exciting times to be a fan of this team and its a dam shame it didn't last longer.

that being said - the strength of the current defense is the front 4 or 5 or 6 - whoever is lined up on the ball. for the first time since the 80's u can say that this unit will be the cornerstone of the D for at least 2-3 years.

hopefully this will translate into consistent QB pressure and ultimately sacks. the league has watched the g-men win 2 bowls in the last 5 years with a talented front four so the current blue print is to mover away from ur standard 3-4 toward a 4-3/5-3/4-6 look.

so what does that mean for our W-L? i have no idea. i do NOT like the looks of our perimeter speed at LB and thats a problem against the AFC teams that can run and pass.

forget tebow, forget keller, forget revis (sort of) the intrigue this year is on the DL. if they can mold together into something then we have a major cog in the wheel going forward. we should start really seeing some excitement from the group in the back 1/2 of the year - after they gel a bit, of course absent of any season ending, knee blow outs.

    enjoy

We'll have to see if they can generate pressures and sacks this season. The Achilles heel of this defense, just like last year, isn't up front, its the mediocrity behind them. That's gonna put a lot of pressure on the guys up front because Revis can't be everywhere and sometimes Cro loses concentration. We won't mention the other guys as we already know their status outside of Harris.

Like you, I was around for the original Sack Exchange and indeed, it was a pleasure to watch as much as watching Wes Walker and Al Toon burn guys deep. That was back when we threw the ball downfield to guys the other team's DC had to respect.

Although I don't have as much expectation for the offense as I have for the D, I'm hoping that unit can just keep us in games and like you said, its up to the guys up front. We just have to hope that they're not on the field too long or by season's end, they'll be gassed.

I hope so, I don't have the stats but seemed to me the Sanchez was sacked more times than we were sacking the opposing QB. If we could up our number of sacks or even just putting pressure on the QB to throw it away that is only going to help us win games. It seems like we have the pieces, we just have to hope that they stay healthy and continue to improve.

Jil, I think this year hinges more on the OL than DL, but your point is made. Passrush is how teams stop NEs offense, and all the explosive ones really.

I love the young guys we've added the last couple of drafts, and I'm excited about out d- line for the first time in a while.
I'm anxious to see if our LB core steps up, but overall, I'm pretty stoked about the D.

i have high hopes but i think we are still a year away from being truly dominate up front.1 more year for ellis and coples to get polished and i think this pass rush becomes ferocious.

I don't think at this point you can say that it's a new sack exchange. With that being said, I do believe the future of the defense is going to be built around Wilkerson, Coples, Kenrick Ellis. The three of them seem to have the combination of size/speed/ability and the best defensive line coaching around all working in their favor. If Rex can make someone like Devito into a very good starter, what can he do with someone like Coples/Wilkerson who have first round talent?

They are still going to need to add some type of outside rusher. I don't see Maybin ever becoming a 50+ snap down lineman.

The defense is a work in progress because they are making a transition but they have plenty of young players to make that transition. But the key really is Mowilk/Coples and to a lesser extent Kenrick.

This Defense is going to keep improving up front. We are 1 OLB away from being a GREAT defense. The guy I'm most excited about is Landry; guys gonna have a great year me thinks!

Wilkerson is pressure. He's not high level pressure yet but he didn't have anybody really helping him last season. Pace is pressure but not high level pressure. Maybin is a pure speed rusher and telegraphs the defense when he is in.

If Coples turns out to be pressure the Jets might just reach critical mass in the pass rush.

Wow, 1 preseason game and we have the new sack exchange.

I think this d-line has as much potential as any other right now, but this is very early to be calling them the "new sack exchange".

I agree, but it's no different than the dozens of others that say our offense isn't going anywhere after that first game.

I would be happy if we could just pressure a qb without having to blitz.

Ya think? The sack exchange had at least 1 year (1981) where both Klecko and Gastineau had 20 sacks each..the last person we had with 10 was Abraham and that was a lifetime ago or so it seems.

We may never see a pass-rusher as good as Mark Gastineau - I would lower the expectations a little bit here

I hope so, we have drafted #1 on the D line the past two years. Tannenbaum's first three #1 picks were Brick, Mangold and Revis, hopefully he's gotten guys of that caliber again.

Yeah. I hate the fucking Giants, but what they have in the trenches is likely going to be far, far closer to the NYSE than what the Jets will field this season. Not that I'm not optimistic about the future of this line, but let's see them dominate anything without a crutch like an overload blitz before we give them any kind of name at all.

The defensive line the Giants have is something you don't see very often. They have three guys who every year will have a chance at 10+ sacks. Maybe the closest thing to the sack exchange that we will see for a while. Not saying that I'm not excited to see what Coples, Wilkerson, and Ellis have to offer. It's easily the most athletic line we have had since S. Ellis and Abraham were anchoring the d-line. Just don't get too excited or you may end up with a let down.

I think the Jets D-Line could be something special in the making. Just destroy Tom Brady - put him on the sideline. If this line can consistantly get to Tom Brady and make his life miserable then the Jets can take the division and maybe have a new sack exchange. I wanna see Brady in the dirt play after play. He then gets rattled - like any QB would - and makes mistakes. That has to happen in order to beat the Pats.
