"When Tebow took off his jersey during that rainy Saturday in Cortland, N.Y., you should have seen the reaction in Broncos camp. Broncos officials couldn't believe the Jets allowed Tebow to bulk up so much. He looked more like a fullback than a quarterback. "Name me a quarterback who is encouraged to get that big," a Broncos official said. "He came out of college weighing around 230 pounds." It's fine for the 6-foot-5 quarterbacks to weigh 250 pounds or more, but Tebow is little under 6-3. How can 15 extra pounds help his throwing?" http://espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp...mp120808/nfl-reflecting-training-camp-travels What do you guys think? Did the Jets tell Tebow to bulk up because they think it'll make him a better QB or are they doing it to make him a more productive player in aspects other than throwing? Will the extra weight detriment his throwing abilities? IMO, it wouldn't surprise me if this were a sign of the Jets pre-determining Tebow's role this season, but I wanna know what ya'll think. How significant is Tebow's "bulk up" to determining what role he plays for the Jets this season? Sorry if there is already a thread discussing this.
The more roles Tebow can play the more often he will be on the field. He wants to be the starting QB but I'm guessing what he wants even more than that is to be on the field most of the time.
i brought this up at a bar the other day. regulars know I'm a Jets fan and naturally in Florida everyone there wanted my opinion. I echoed pretty much whoever this Bronco's source is. his mechanics were stiff and robotic, adding bulk and being over 250 at his height doesnt help any of that. plus nobody tells their already built like a rock player to bulk up more so he can play QB. hes a decoy, a ballcarrier, and something extra for teams to gameplan for. and if god forbid Sanchez goes down, hes the QB. i see somewhere around 600-800 rushing yds. about 8-10 rushing tds. and somewhere around 8 passing tds for him.
The extra weight didn't seem to affect his throwing ability in the least yesterday. As for the Broncos, I would be more worried about an old man who has his head stapled on his neck.
Forget about "hinting" at anything. The Jets have done everything short of putting up giant flashing neon letters stating that Tebow is going to be Brad Smith II+. Amazingly, some people still don't get it.
Sad but true. I think Tim knows that to see significant playing time this year he has to buy into the WC QB thing. And Tim has always done what's asked of him. He wants to play as much as they will let him.
But they asked him to do that. How many teams ask their franchise QBs to bulk up on pounds of muscle. Or, why do you think the Jets told him to do so?
"They didn't bring him in to be a QB... They didn't bring him in to be a QB... They didn't bring him in to be a QB..." Just keep saying it over and over and maybe it will be true. Yes, he was not brought in to be the starting QB. He added bulk to be a more efficient wild cat threat... but don't for a second think he's not a QB. He's a backup that is being used elsewhere thanks to his unique skills. But to deny he's not a QB and not a backup is silly. Can't wait for tomorrow!
I don't read anything into the 250 pound weight. I think it's his natural weight. To wit: 1. The idea that the Jets asked him to do it is myth and legend at this point, IMO. I tried to track down a source for that, but it's not out there. It started being hinted, and bloggers have just accepted as gospel. The only fact we know is he showed up and weight in at 250. 2. He played at over 240 in college, even 245. Possibly even 250. He dropped weight in preparation for the combine (as a lot of players do). Lighter is faster for the 40. His all time lightest weight was then, at 236. 3. I think he was probably creeping up all along last year. It's solid muscle, and on his frame and extra 10 pounds of muscle has plenty of places to go. 4. He does not train with heavy lifting or weight-building exercise. His workouts are ballistic and explosive.
he'll be our WC guy, our trick play guy, play STs. The '12 version of Brad Smith. He wasn't brought here to take Sanchez's job, the thing Tebow does best(play well late in games) Sanchez has been better at. Sanchez is a young QB w/ great postseason experience, winning 4 road playoff games and never looking like the stage was too big for him. Tebow played well in one home playoff game, on the road he looked like he didn't belong and his team traded him. He's not here to play QB except in an emergency and if it happens our season will be over.
It's been discussed before, and some were grasping at the notion that him bulking up definitively proved that they wanted him to be a FB or whatever, and more importantly, NOT a QB. I don't buy the argument as I don't think the weight affects his ability to play QB or to pass the ball.
