Practice report: Tebow beats Rex -- again By Rich Cimini | Aug 8, 2012 12:16 PM CORTLAND, N.Y. -- After two days of fighting, the Jets managed to restrain themselves Wednesday and made it through the entire practice without any skirmishes. It got slightly tense when QB Mark Sanchez yelled at OLB Aaron Maybin for hitting QB Matt Simms as he delivered a pass, violating the no-contact rule for quarterbacks. Nothing came of it, although Maybin was flagged later in the practice for unnecessary roughness on WR Eron Riley. Maybin is having a productive camp, but he's so relentless that he sometimes crosses the line and gets too physical. Frankly, it's a surprise that he hasn't been involved in any of the scuffles because his style definitely chafes the offensive players. The star of practice was QB Tim Tebow, who received two reps with the starting offense. He had one or two previous reps with the starters, he recalled, but those came with a patchwork offensive line. This time, on the second play, he struck for a 60-yard TD pass to WR Patrick Turner. Here's a fascinating nugget: On the Turner score, Tebow beat the same defensive call (zero blitz) that the Jets used on the game-deciding play last November in Denver. Surely, you remember that play, Tebow eluding a blitz (and S Eric Smith) and running for a 20-yard touchdown in the final minute. This time, he eluded LB Bart Scott and, instead of running, he found a wide-open Turner, who got behind CB Antonio Cromartie. Afterward, Tebow said he and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine were joking about it. It was one of Tebow's best days of practice. He completed seven of 11 passes for one TD. In a 7-on-7 drill, he hit TE Jeff Cumberland for a 50-yard TD. Rex seems to be at odds with Cimini's conclusion. In his presser, he said Bart would have had Tebow for a sack. Hmmm.... Who to believe?
One a close call involves Tebow being tackled, bet against the tackle. This is touch football for the quarterbacks. In live game, they come in trying to make sure they don't get trucked. Edge to Tebow.
But if he breaks the tackle, is the receiver still open by the time it happens? Too much variables to start playing that game. Tebow made nice play, no need to overanalyze it. That long attempt form Tebow can throw some wrinkles into his formation. It's what allowed Brad Smith to have room to run, the Jets threw it once deep with him and all of a sudden teams were worried about that. Of course, I hope Sparano keeps his long chunks mentality. Would be a great difference, and one for the better I think, than what Schotty tried to do
Maybe. Btw, I am thrilled that Tebow is improving. From the footage I have seen on espn his throwing motion has improved dramatically from last year. He still floats the short ones, though. It looks like he is steering them instead of trusting himself and letting it rip. I hope his progress continues. We will all get to see it on Friday night. A competent Tebow as Mark's backup and a major weapon off the bench, only helps my favorite team.
agree about him floating the short passes, Rex had indicated he was working on touch on short passes. Do you think that could be the reason he seems to be lobbing them to a certain extent. as a comment on Bart Scott sacking Tebow on the play, I think that was a little tongue in cheek based on the tweets I read about it
So long as the fans presenting ESPN analysis as evidentiary aren't the same who call the media caustic and incorrect, then I see nothing wrong with the OP.
Wow where are the haters??? Last year after tons and tons and tons of hate in the Denver forums , it got dead quite after all th comeback victories , it was funny to watch.
Oh don't worry , they are out there lurking. They are just waiting for some incompletions to embolden their spirit.
I hope Tebow really lights it up in preseason, putting the pressure on Sanchez early. That would be nice
It's kind of like back at the beginning of camp. On Day 1, Sanchez did better, a Tebow critic started a thread here about it and a number of other critics sounded off. Then, Tebow completed 80% of his passes on day 2 and it was mysteriously silent
once again, we're not haters. he's the fucking backup quarterback/wildcat option guy. nothing more, nothing less... unless Mark gets injured or we start off 0-5 don't read too much into this. i would bet a large sum of money that espn was all over this today saying: BREAKING NEWS INTO THE ESPN NEWS ROOM: Tebow has the upper hand today in the JETS QUARTERBACK CONTROVERSY (hint, there isn't one... at all.) you people act like we gain satisfaction from watching tebow struggle or some shit. as if theres an actual quarterback controversy in the first place.
Actually Bill, quite a few Jets fans who come in here every once in a while are exactly that and they do seem to get satisfaction seeing Tebow struggle. Not all of you all, to be sure, (and I didn't mean to imply otherwise.) But it's been an extremely vocal minority who have been haters
