He didn't really compare the players other than their respective draft positions and how much playing time they got right out of the gate.

Mo Wilk started right away because he was replacing Ellis who was no longer with the team. Coples isn't coming in to fill a hole he has to work his way above 3 players who were on the team last year. This is Devito's 4th year here. I wouldn't be surprise to see Coples eventually take his spot but I think its likely Devito is the "starter" and Coples gets as much playing time because of all the 4 man fronts.

Some people seriously over react. This shouldn't even be considered a bump in the road. He's a rookie. Hell, I'd be happy if Devito played more often than Coples in obvious running situations. I would much rather see Coples eased into the system as a situational pass rusher and developed. The only thing that could really hold him back is work ethic. Look at how it worked out for JPP and Aldon Smith. They both helped their teams out tremendously this season.

I understand how some could look at Wilkerson and say, well, he started. But, this is a completely different situation. Wilkerson had to fill a hole and did a pretty damn good job of it. Coples has to work his ass off to get on the field because we have so much depth on the DL.

Coples will get it. Give him a little time.

Peter Schwartz just ripped him pretty good saying he hasn't shown the burst or an ability to make a difference...I'm nervous.

Good call. It's good to give him competition and make him work hard to just crack the lineup instead of just giving him an automatic spot because he was the first round pick. It's good for him and for us as a team: best players should be on the field, if he's not good enough to take someone's job at this point then he shouldn't be out there instead of that player (within reason, he does need to get some snaps to get experience so he can develop, I mean as a starter).

Vlad improved during the season last year. Its not surprising that he is showing progress and improvement after an additional yr of training and working on his game. This is significantly helped by the fact that the Jets OC and OLC have been replaced and the new regime is now letting him play Guard which exactly where he was projected to play in the NFL when he was drafted.

Can't lie, I'm starting to get worried about Coples. Maybe it's just ghosts of Gholston's past haunting me though.

Me too. Please, holy Revis, let Coples get a sack next year. 1 sack isn't too much to ask, is it?

lol dump him now. Then the Pats can pick him up as a FA and he'll become a star.

I'm curious, what exactly is it that makes you so confident Jones is incapable of having an impact year one? I doubt the Patriots are looking to sit him as a rookie, I don't think they would have given up a 1st and 3rd if that were the case.

FWIW, Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe disagrees with your assessment

There is no comparison to Gholston and Coples.
Unless there is a significant signing or draft pick - Coples will be hands down the best Defensive linemen on the Jets in 2 years - Way ahead of Ellis and Wilkerson.

I thought Coples was going to be a good player. Still hope he is, but the reports out of TC don't sound very positive.

I hated the Coples pick as much as I loved the Hill pick. Defensive lineman are always taken 15-20 spots before they should be. I wanted a RT, but maybe he can get better. He sounded clueless Friday on Sirius Satellite radio when they interviewed him.
