He has been underground now for over 10 years so U have to transfer the blame to our new owner WJ
Peyton knew he was going to be the #1 pick regardless. Why would it matter if he went to one shit team over another?
I always had it that parcells wouldn't kowtow to the mannings and he Let his ego get in the way.... Credit Parcells for spending a record Salary and 2 picks to get Curtis But, if it were me I'd be at the Manning's house every night prior to his decision... What the Jets have ALWAYS lacked in my time has been a top QB...Vinny did well, but, I'm talking a Franchise HOF QB for the long haul..... To me, this ONE move or non move was the difference in SB or no SB since 1997.
He didn't have a choice. He had a very narrow focus on his mission with the Jets. Hess passed away in mid '99 and Parcells was off the sidelines after that season and out of town after the next. FWIW I don't think Parcells ever liked the Jets or the Jets job. I think the effort he put in was all about an unprecedented contract for a HC/GM and his commitment to Hess on a personal level to try to get it done. Coaching the Giants all those years would have let him see the Jets close up in the same media market and I doubt he came away impressed with the franchise. If nothing else he had to listen to the Giants owners and management beating on the Jets when the two teams were both good at the same time in the early to mid 80's.
IMO the Gholston pick set the team back at least 2-3 years. He was expected to be the dominant pass rusher that was going to drive a SB-winning defense and of course we all know what happened. We've been searching for that guy for at least 10 years.
The Colts just hired Polian and nobody in Indianapolis really gave a shit about the Colts. Easier environment to start out with for Peyton. New York would've been rough on Peyton. Especially that 1st year, 28 ints. Who knows how he would've developed here. Same with Marino...everybody says the Jets needed Marino. I think there's a good chance Dan would've come here, snorted his nose off and gotten killed by our offensive line
What would you have had the Jets do with that pick though looking back in retrospect? Nobody was willing to trade for the 6. It was like a no-man's land of picks that year. The Pats were sitting right behind the Jets at 7. The Jets obviously needed a pass rusher to make Mangini's 3-4 work, if it could work at all. So you can't trade down because nobody wants to trade up to that pick. You can't trade up because you don't see anybody you really want up above you, at least not enough to make the trade. You're not going to trade up for Jake Long because you have D'Brick, You can't sort Chris Long, Glenn Dorsey and Vernon Gholston apart very well. You'd love to get Matt Ryan but with the Michael Vick saga finally concluded the Falcons are going to take Ryan on the 3. You can't really pass on Gholston either because there's nobody behind him that's compelling. The Pats are sitting right there on the next pick and then trade out of it. It was just a really screwed up situation. I didn't like the pick at the time but I didn't have any alternatives in mind that would have worked either so I'm not going to fault them on the pick specifically. I still think the Jets have screwed up the 1st round in general over the last decade but you can't take the Gholston pick and hold that over their heads in isolation.
Unwillingness to play young players and let them develop and way way way too much reliance on retread veterans
Actually, I'm not hating on the Gholston move in context. At the time, it was a good move. We needed a pass rusher and he was the best one on the board. He was both BPA and fit a position of need, so it made perfect sense. I was commenting more on the shitty luck we had with that one move. He could have literally been the x-factor that put us over the top for two consecutive Super Bowls and of course had to become the biggest draft bust in our team's history. Typical SOJ.
The team from the top down suffers from the Psycology of Failure. http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Psychology-of-Failure&id=761030
Exactly... And Frankly - to me the Dwayne Robertson pick was 100x worse..... Gholston was a concenus pick ALL SEASON that year for a top 10 pick... Freaking Dwayne Robertson came out of no where and the GM admitted he needed to make a splash after the percieved fleecing from WAS.... SILLY! That was also a draft supposedly with 7 or so closely ranked DT's - So, even a marginal Fantasy Player would know better than to trade up instead of sitting back UNLESS, like I said at the time, you were willing to give up your first born for such a player - That was my comment on the day of that trade= Bradway better be willing to bet a child on Dewayne Robertson. And that Draft, unlike the Gholston Draft - WAS STACKED with talent - A real opportunity that year to amass talent.
How can you possibly say that Robertson was a worse pick than Gholston? In 5 years, Robertson started every game but 3, had 16 sacks and was never a defensive liability. Gholston, on the other had, started 3 games in 3 years, had a whopping 16 total tackles and 0 sacks.
This has a lot to do with playing in New York. I love my teams (Jets Mets Knicks) but I hate the way the city is portrayed especially through the media, with this obsession with instant gratification. The Jets have (in my time, born in 90) lacked any long term plans that they've stuck with. The Giants were the same way too, they wanted rid of Eli and Coughlin but they saved themselves by winning a superbowl in the very same season. Even though Eli and Coughlin were both solid (I was a big fan of Coughlin, I prayed he'd get fired and come to the Jets), they very narrowly escaped the guillotine of a notoriously impatient fanbase. They were lucky to do so. Our best chance was Parcells but we are on the other end of the luck spectrum with Vinny's ACL.
Wow great article! This goes beyond football, his talk about breathing is what impressed me. I've come to find in life that breathing is everything, and if you practice controlled breathing, life is just easier! How could breathing have helped the New York Jets, not sure. Maybe the front office and staff should practice pranayama. This breathing practice helps reset the nervous system and other conditioned habits we hold whether consciously or not. This goes way beyond just football but I was impressed with the article, and I do believe a big part of it is mentality. This organization needs to breathe in a new mentality, and thats why I have loved Rex's approach. It is radical, but this organization needs it.
then, why did eli manning force his way onto the giants instead of the san diego chargers on draft day?hmy:
Eli didn't force his way onto the Giants. He forced his way out of San Diego where he had both competition in Drew Brees and a tough GM to deal with in AJ Smith. There's no way Eli Manning starts at all in 2004 if he goes to San Diego. In fact he probably winds up traded, a la Steve Young from the Bucs, after a few years. Those growing pains weren't going to unseat Brees. The reason the Chargers chose Rivers over Brees was because Rivers looked like the whole package early on and Brees got hurt. Put Eli on that team and his odds on beating out Brees would have been 50/50 at best.
I don't agree with the negavite connotation of the thread title. The Jets as a franchise are an important piece of NFL history, have a huge base of diehard fans, and have been quite competitive since the dark ages of the mid 90's. I love the AFL roots, the underdog mentality, and excitement this franchise brings. As much ojeda as they give me, i can't imagine being this closely connected to another team in the NFL. If the OP really meant why haven't we won a championship since 69, then i'd say biggest part is not being able to find that right QB. That's been a huge reason and difference between being a top team and a championship team. It's always been a QB league. The stats are higher now due to rule changes, etc, but the QB has always been the single most important position by far. I'm very amped about this Rex Ryan era, and his connection to the roots of this team. Ultimately, we will need some special QB play to gain a Super Bowl while Ryan is here though. The Jets are also a bit of a snake bitten team luck wise. Every championship run has some good fortune. A little luck is always needed. The Jets have not been someone you'd want to sit next to at a casino. Weird things go wrong for the Jets at critical times, as they do for all teams.. However, the weird luck things don't often seem to go in their favor. I think the Bills and Vikings can also make this claim in terms of lost opportunities as well. However, its still a part of what being a die hard Jet fan is all about, and what makes the team both exciting and agonizing. It will also make the day they do win another Super Bowl just beyond special (like the Rangers in '94 was for me)..
