Good post. Sanchez always looked more comfortable calling his own plays in the two minute drill and just going. Whether that was because Schotty's offense was too complex and precise or Sanchez has trouble running an NFL offense we will find out. I do think last year also makes a lot of posters forget Sanchez can throw the deep ball. Even some beat writers have claimed he can't, when in fact he can and did when had the targets.
This argument for Sanchez suddenly developing into a good QB simply doesn't hold water because Sanchez hasn't shown much in his 50+ starts. By the time Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, etc had started 50+ games, they had all been either Pro Bowlers or Super Bowl winners or both. Sanchez hasn't been able to even get a seasonal QBR over 80, he's always been ranked in the bottom 10 starting QBs in the league, and his poor play was a big reason that the Jets failed to make the playoffs last season when the team needed him to play well more than it had in the previous seasons. Compare Sanchez's stats to Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan's first three years, both recent QBs who started early on playoff quality teams just like Sanchez did. Sanchez essentially stopped developing about midway through his second season and hasn't improved significantly since then. His stats have improved somewhat last season, but his play on the field, particularly his decision making, his pocket presence, and his leadership have NOT. IMO, he's NOT going to get a whole better than he was last season. He's pretty much reached his ceiling, and unfortunately for the Jets, it's NOT a very high ceiling. He's among the approximately 50% of first round QBs who fail historically.
I obviously disagree. Flacco seemed to hit a wall in his 2nd or 3rd year too, and look at him last year. OBviously that doesn't mean anything to what will happen with Sanchez, I just think it's a poor example. Also, Sanchez has played better than either Ryan or Flacco in their best playoff games. And you could argue the teams around all 3 have been just about the same talent and production wise with the Ravens probably being the best. I wouldn't say Sanchez's progression stopped middle second year, he had some nice games against CHI and PITT x2 after the middle of that season. Sanchez's problem is consistency. If he can play consistently like he did in 11, that's all the Jets need. It probably would put him around 12-17 in QB rankings which is fine. Consistency is something that can be improved. I believe all the QB's you stated in the beginning were not starters in their first game of their first season or proclaimed starters. I think comparing them to Flacco and Ryan, day 1 starters and what has kept Flacco recently and Sanchez now from receiving the praise Ryan gets (deservedly or undeservedly so) is their consistency.
This is hyperbole and smack talk. If you want a serious response provide real evidence that what you're saying is correct.
The INT come because he can not make those snap quick decisions that the elite QBs in the NFL can do
Nah he is lacking also the quick release ala JWN besides not being able to make the quick snap proper decision so he does not have the "it" factor IMHO
Yes but Montana made those smart (not dumb) snap quick decisions even under duress where the talent around him has been neutralized
We don't need Sanchez to be Joe Montana. We just need him to be less like Ryan Fitzpatrick. If he starts playing in the top half of NFL Qbs instead of the bottom half we will be in good shape.
Well since we have to overtake the NEPs to get to the SB we need him to be better then TB at the least. Then there is Roth & Manning also in our way to get to that elusive SB
Good post. I'd also point out that the article alluded to his inexeprience coming out. Bottom line is he was 14 or 15 games removed from High School, when he took his first NFL start, and then had the misfortune of being stuck in Schitty's system. I think with a better offensive system, and some stability in the recieving corps...THis year, should be the equivalent to what would have been the third year for a normal QB coming out.....
Montana played under Bill Walsh, not Brian Schottenheimer. Those quick decisions were exceptionally well coached.... Bottom line is Sanchez is a much better Quarterback than Chad Henne and Miami managed to be productive with him. I think Sparano will get Sanchez where we all want him to be.
Champ this is delusional. There's no way the Jets are ever likely to have a QB that is better than Tom Brady is right now. The Washington Redskins won 3 Super Bowls in the 80's and early 90's without ever having a QB better than Joe Montana. The Dallas Cowboys won 3 Super Bowls in the early 90's while the great QB's were in Miami and San Francisco. Watching Tom Brady and the great QB's of this century play have convinced people that you need a great world-beating QB to win the Super Bowl. It's a fact that 4 of the last 7 Super Bowls have been won by Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning, neither of whom is a world-beating QB. What the Jets need to do to beat the Pats and win a Super Bowl is either play great as a team or watch Tom Brady decline. Even if Brady declines that doesn't mean the Jets can win a Super Bowl it just means they can beat the Pats for the division.
We managed to beat Tom Brady once how did that happen then? Its a team sport not a QB sport. I'm more worried about the Ravens than the Pats.
The 80s are not the 10s & FB has really evolved from the 80s till now. Yes I also see 4 or 5 AFC teams that on paper makes us look a top 10 bottom feeder this year
Yes but the teams that are winning the Super Bowls now tend to be the same kind of teams that were winning the Super Bowls in the 80's. Solid all-around teams that are peaking at the right time and really good on both sides of the ball by the end of the season. The only teams that have won a Super Bowl this decade without a defense playing really well by the end of the year are the 2006 Colts and the 2009 Saints. The 2001 Rams, 2007 Pats, 2008 Cards and 2011 Pats all lost their big game against a better balanced team despite having an all-timne great having an all-time great season at QB for them. Yeah it was Kurt Warner and Tom Brady going 0-for-4 in those games because the other team's defense was better. The other team's QB in each game was certainly the worse player at the time.
Amazing how quickly people have forgotten that Mark Sanchez was indeed in Pro-bowl discussions ( not that anyone was selecting him, but he was being talked about ) as late as December of last season before the complete melt down of the entire team in the last 3 weeks. As of Dec 15th of last year Sanchez had Career high in TouchDowns ( 21 ) and Passer Rating ( 83.1 ) and was taking care of the football ( 11 ints ).
Yea then the last few weeks he was playing hurt and struggling. He also had a lot of rushing TDs. He was having a great year until his end of the season collapse.
