Too lazy to peruse the thread.. can someone re-post why he failed the physical (out of shape, injury, etc)? thanks
I think the Panthers and the League office would have an issue with this. First he doesn't pass his physical, so you can have him back, but we are gonna sign him to a free agent contract?
I'm sure the Jets know by now whether he can help them down the road this season or not and what his mentality is so my guess is if the Jets want him they can probably sign him. Maybe he can get healthy for next season or maybe he just does'nt have the desire to do what it takes to be an NFL player any longer.
Bad knees suck in regular life but they are devastating for 350 lbs football players. Just ask Kris Jenkins. Otah is likely done. Austin Howard, you are our only hope...
The dude is injury prone and seems to lack the mental toughness necessary to make it from everything I've read. I'd pass.
It would look like and be a dickhead move if the Jets voided a trade (measley 7th rounder) to get this guy, then turned right around and picked the guy up as a free agent.
You miss the whole point. Under your scenario of him playing so well, that the Jets couldn't afford to re-sign him in 2013, would mean the Jets would get a compensatory pick equal or higher than a 7th rounder for letting him walk. So in other words, if he wouldve effectively started it would have been win win for the Jets.
The Panthers could have kept him or another team could sign him... If we sign him, theres really nothing wrong with it.
No it wouldn't. Otah was due to make $1.1mil or something when traded for AND a 7th rounder. Even if he failed his physical, Jets still had the option to keep him. On the FA market, he's worth nothing more than vets minimum, which would be $700k. There's a reasonable difference between 700k and 1.1 mil w/ 7th rounder. That's where the Jets need to weight their options. They obviously thought he wasn't worth 1.1 mil with a 7th rounder. Now they need to decide whether he's worth $700k on the open market. How bad can he be? We've picked up several boom or bust players this off season and I wouldn't be surprised if Tanny grabs him with 700k. If he doesn't show improvement till the start of season, make him part of the final cuts. Big deal. Jets would owe him nothing.
I'd sign him and see what he can do between now and the start of the season put it this way, a year to learn the system and get healthy plus another year to prove himself cant lose in this scenario
The right tackle position is a real issue that has never been addressed this season...If hunter falls on his face and no one steps up.. Tanny should get some real heat about it. A bad oline can ruin a season..look at last year..Rb don't get holes ..Sanchez never gets his feet set..everything falls apart..I hope they figure it out
Jets have made a "low handed" move before under Tanny. "Stole" Trevor Pryce from Baltimore last year I believe
