So let the writers speculate. Maybe they're trying different stuff, and want to get a look at some other players? Why address it and get into specifics like Pettine did?
We're hearing that he's rotating with the ones and stonewalling Coples. Is that not good? Why don't you backup your negativity with some facts? I understand people saying he has sucked, but saying he can't develop is just SOJF crap IMO.
Vlad had 3 years to develop mentally. He hasn't produced. This is more about Coples honestly. The 16th overall pick should be an immediate starter and impact IMO. All we've been hearing is how he's been struggling to pick things up. I think he'll eventually pick things up and he won't Gholston on us, but I still think we could've gotten better value for a 1st round pick.
This is his 3rd season so no, he hasn't had 3 years - he's had 2 and this is the beginning of his 3rd. This is his first full off season. He was drafted as a project player whom needed time to develop. Fans need to recognize the fact that he was drafted with some developmental time in mind. Saying he hasn't produced is fair. Saying he can't develop is stupid. You sound like someone who can't wait to call Jets players a bust. It's sad that we have fans like that.
jpp was drafted around 16 overall, aldon smith was drafted in the top ten ... neither started immediately, and both were eased into their systems by only playing passing downs youve heard one report about them lessening his load and now thats "all you hear about" ... despite the fact that there were reports out of mini-camp about him kicking ass ridiculous
Coples is struggling I hear.... I swear this is going to haunt us if he is a bust. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/08/02/jets-scale-back-quinton-coples-workload/
That 'article' was probably written using the article from the OP as it's source. Relax, it's the first week of august. It sounds like the Jets coaching staff is handling it smart.
Didnt Bill Parcells always say,, For each rookie that you start,, you will lose at least one game for each one that starts.. If you think of this he is so right. Go Jets. Also give Coples a break, every player is different, I just feel he is going to be special.
LOL! If he had been drafted by the Steelers or Patriots, he would have been "the best value pick in the draft", "genius", etc. Cut him - he'll become a furniture mover. That's all he's good for.
No, but what you WOULDN'T have heard is him being anointed an instant starter like he was by your HC. The only thing realistically wrong with Coples first few weeks of professional football is the over hyped high expectations that were put on him by his HC, organization, and fans. He's finding out that he's not in the ACC anymore. Its a LOT harder. Every player he goes against is better than any player he went against in college. I think your DC is doing the right thing in the way he went about indoctrinating Coples into the reality of the NFL. Remember this is a kid who on the first day of OTA's declared he already had the playbook down pat. So what does the DC do, he over loads him in the first week of camp and proves to him that he doesn't know as much as he thinks. Now he when he forces him to take "baby steps" he will have a more willing pupil. Get good at ONE thing then we will teach you another. This is well respected, proven coaching technique. As the original poster of the thread, this "hiccup" is nothing to be worried about, BUT it is probably a little disappointing to those fans who need to see some instant gratification from a player most of them deemed to be a top 5 talent in the draft. The more realistic view is that Coples becomes a situational pass rusher in sub packages both at DE and DT. Hopefully he'll get 4-6 sacks and the appropriate number of hurries. What he likely WON'T be (this year), is that sudden impact player who turns a good Jet defense into a great one. (this year) Since the Pats have a similar player in Jones, both fan bases look toward the JPP example and hope their player can duplicate his results. So we look at JPP's rookie year and see that it was decent to good, but certainly NOT impactful, like his 2nd year. Bottom line: It's all about expectations. I think the great majority of Pats fans would be thrilled with 4-6 sacks and occasional flashes of brilliance from Jones for his rookie year. While I fear most Jet fans would look on that result as being a failure for Coples
Quittin Doples (kidding). Just a thought: The way Rex and Tannenbaum pump up even no-name guys up to the press like they're future HOF'ers (Caleb Schauderhaff), Coples must really be struggling for them to admit the slightest negative about him.
Coples is not nor should not =/= Jones Jones is a project straight up, Coples got as many sacks in his junior year as Jones did in all 3. Jones can be good im not denying it, but he is definitely the kinda guy you sit on and hope for the best. Where Coples can be a fixture in the Jets transition from a 3-4 to a 4-3.
I don't know much about Coples, but are the comparisons to Pierre-Paul and Smith accurate? It seems like they don't even play the same position. JPP would either not fit at all in a 3-4 or maybe play DE (he's around 280 pounds I think), but Smith plays OLB. I'm guessing Coples is a 3-4 DE.
