http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/je...les?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter I don't think it's any reason for panic, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'm a little disappointed that he's not ahead of DeVito at this point. It's pretty typical for rookies to be swimming mentally at this stage. I just hope he has the work ethic to put the work in required to learn.
You're disappointed a rookie that is 1 week in to training camp isn't ahead of a defensive lineman who is entering his 4th year in the system? Okay.....
heh. I just kind of assumed he'd go right in and be ahead of DeVito because he's a way better athlete. Point taken though.
I'm with you. While I'd love for him to be ahead of Devito at this point, it's unfair to expect it. As you stated, hopefully he has the proper work ethic and he continues to develop nicely.
cut this bust ///first bust post actually it looks like they are keeping him in his comfort zone right now to let him adjust to the speed of the game. not worried at all
I think its alot to take a rookie and expect him to be a starter in both the 3-4 and 4-3. Truthfully id rather them get him awesome at playing in a 4-3, instead of pretty good at both. If anything though, id take this at a sign that were planning on using alot less 3-4 than originally expected. Otherwise theyd definitely have him focus on both. Hell it kinda makes sense anyway. Our 3-4 package is full of run stoppers for rushing downs, and our 4-3 sub package is the one you wanna see on 3rd downs. Might as well put one of the better run pluggers in the league (devito) on the field more, so that the guy we drafted considered the best pass rusher in the draft can be maximized where it counts.
never understood the pick considering dline was our deepest position....he isnt a natural pass rusher either...if he was I'd understand stock piling talent ala the Giants...but he's another glorified run stuffer.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2012/08/jets_first-round_pick_de_quint.html The mention of him being robotic on the field, gave me a very bad thought............... Vernon Gholston hmy: Please NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Don't compare the two. Coples has plenty of pass-rushing moves, including bull and speed rushes. Gholston only had a bull-rush and had only one season of college production
The issue with Coples coming out wasn't technique but effort. This is the thing to watch. If the effort is there I think he will be fine.
I expect your guy (Coples) and ours (Jones) to both have some growing pains coming into this season. I think it'll take into their 2nd years to really know what you've got. I expect Hill for the jets and Hightower to be the imact rookies for both teams. I think Highsmith will be in the mix for alot of playing time in NE and though I think Hill won't be as good as he's gonna be, he can fly. And the one thing both Sanchez and tebow can do is throw the long ball pretty well.
He had 15.5 sacks as an interior pass rusher his junior year in the ACC. That doesn't happen on the interior unless you are explosive out of your stance, can bend your hips & the ability to close on the Quarterback. He clearly displayed that. How is he NOT a natural pass rusher? I think what you mean to say is that he's only average at getting the edge. He's not a SPEED rusher.
i agree.i thought hightower was a plug and play guy coming out of the draft. i thought tanny had a great analysis on hill the other day. basically he is big strong fast and can block.his floor will have an impact on this offense
Mo Wilk was a 3-4 DE drafted to play... 3-4 DE. So it made sense for him to start at 3-4 DE. Coples is a 4-3 DT/DE and is going to start at ... 4-3 DT/DE Coples lacks the size of your typical 3-4 DE as well as experience in it. So rather than overload a rookie having him learn/practice two very different sets, it makes sense to have him focus on the one where he brings alot more to the team. In the 3-4 he would just be another run plugger, which we have plenty of decent ones (Devito, Ellis, Pouha, Wilkerson). Not to mention we have terrific run stopping 3-4 ILBs, as well as a whole slew of safeties who specialize in stopping the run. In the 4-3 he would be either the best, or one of the best pass rushers on the field period. Its very obvious that Coples is exponentially more valuable in 4-3 sets than he would be in 3-4, especially since we didnt address 3-4 olb at all whatsoever. Not to mention the most important thing to win in todays nfl is to stop passing offenses (see Brady), and the 4-3 is how we do that. I have no issue if Coples barely plays in the 3-4 at all this year, as long as we use the 4-3 as much as I expect us to. This is a non issue. Period
what planet are you on Prior to the Jets drafting Coples most people considered him the best pass rusher in the draft PERIOD. At worst he was considered possibly the 2nd best pass rusher in the draft. It was only once the Jets drafted him that Coples instantly became some unmotivated retard that sucks, hates football, is lazy, eats babys, and is a super Nazi
