As per ROTOWORLD ESPN's Adam Schefter mentioned on SportsCenter Tuesday that the Jets have "spoken" to free agent Cedric Benson. Schefter also reiterated that the Raiders and Packers have sniffed around Benson, but "nothing has materialized just yet." This was the first we'd heard of the Jets' interest, although their running back coach, Anthony Lynn, talked up current starter Shonn Greene Tuesday as if he were one of the best backs in the league. The Jets will probably continue to overrate and misevaluate Greene, but they still ought to consider Benson. He'd be an upgrade on what they have now.
I think we should look more seriously into a RT. If McKnight and Powell are as good as the coaches are saying in camp along with Gannaway i think well be better off at RB then what ppl think
It doesnt say when... 2 weeks ago Benson said he talked to the Jets "Way Earlier" in the summer So is Schefter referring to that ?
He's 29. He has some miles on him. And he behaves like a moron (2 DUI arrests, 2 assault arrests since '08). But if he has somehow grown up he might be a worthwhile addition. But I wouldn't give him alot of $$$ and I would cut him immediately if he is arrested again (unless he's having a great season).
And Greene ran for over 1000 yards right here with the Jets last season. What's so wrong with Greene that you'd want Benson? Also, Greene has not had the boneheaded off-the-field incidents like Benson has had. Benson is an idiot with a whole heck of a lot of mileage. He was a hard runner at Texas. He took a beating there and he has gone on to take a beating in the NFL. I betcha he would not be any better with the Jets than Barlow was.
IMO if we sign Benson its because McKnight/Powell/Ganaway arent where they should be, not Greene. I strongly doubt we sign Benson, but if we do think its because the FO knows that nobody else can take carries from Greene. Because I think Benson is just a worse version of Greene with more problems.
Nati chose the law firm over re-upping w/CB. Marvin Lewis think's he's done and/or Mike Brown refuses to trust him b/c of the BS. I think when you look at his alarming fumbles it becomes a thanks but no thanks. If he will take the Vet Min. subject to appropriate terms - maybe. he doesn't suck. but he started coughed up the football alot last season and that killed the gals. i say no.
Greene and Benson ground and pound baby! Mix in McKnight and Powell fresh RBs is always a good thing.
Four tailbacks on an NFL roster is unnecessary in this day and age. Go look up all the 2011 team stats. Find for me the #4 back on all 32 teams. There might be one or two, tops, who had more than 30 carries. I did post such a list here on TGG some years ago about 3rd string RBs. I may have done that research for the 2007 or 2008 season. There were only a few 3rd stringers who saw significant usage. It is completely unnecessary for the Jets to sign Benson. Different story if Greene, Powell, Ganaway or McKnight were to get injured. But, even then I would prefer the Jets sign a younger, less idiotic RB.
