http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...-ny-jets-hit-ground-running-article-1.1122102 Rex Ryan, NY Jets will hit ground running with new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano The Gang Green ground attack slipped to 22nd in the league in 2011 after finishing first and fourth in the first two seasons under Ryan. By Manish Mehta / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS The NFL may be transitioning to a high-flying, aerial show filled with pass-happy teams, but the Jets hope to rebound from a forgettable 2011 by turning back the clock. Rex Ryan & Co. travel to Cortland on Thursday for the start of training camp with an eye on rediscovering their ground-and-pound roots. New offensive coordinator Tony Sparano’s primary objective: Reclaim what was lost last season when the Jets’ running game inexplicably disappeared. The ground attack slipped to 22nd in the league in 2011 after finishing first and fourth in the first two seasons under Ryan. Although the league is trending toward the air — an unprecedented three quarterbacks threw for 5,000-plus yards and 10 for 4,000 last season — Sparano, a Bill Parcells disciple, is sticking to his old-school, run-based philosophy. “Even though it’s going a little bit the way it’s going (with so much passing),” Sparano told the Daily News, “I think when you look at the end of the whole shooting match, the teams that are playing usually in late January and into February are teams that, in one way or another, have demonstrated that they can run the ball. Those core beliefs are in me.” Ryan has made no secret that he prefers to simplify matters on offense after the Jets’ unsuccessful early-season experiment to let Mark Sanchez air it out last year prompted the coach to make an executive decision to return to the run-first formula that paved the way for two consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances. “My blueprint never changed for this team (and) for this organization,” Ryan told The News. “(General manager) Mike (Tannenbaum) and I talk about it all the time. We want to be a physical football team. . . . We have a style of football that’s New York Jet football. You go back and all you ever hear me talk about is New York Jet football. I don’t know if we actually played that way as much as I wanted to last year. “When you talked about an identity, we want to move the football. . . . I don’t care how many times we throw it. I don’t . . . but (we want) that threat of we’re going to be physical. We’re going to be (using) run-gap running schemes and try to knock you off the football. I’m not saying we’re always going to get it done, but that’s our mentality.” Sparano’s first order of business was developing a scheme to tailor to his best players’ strengths, including his receiving options. Sparano disagreed with the notion that a run-based philosophy has to be conservative. The Jets, who finished 8-8 last season and missed the playoffs for the first time under Ryan, will take their fair share of shots downfield. “When you shorten the game, you make sure you help your defense that way,” Sparano said. “But that doesn’t mean that you’re not explosive in doing so. You have to have a good balance between both. That’s the way that we’re constructing our offense. We’re going to run the football. There’s no doubt about it. And we’re going to be physical in doing so. We’re going to be explosive. And we’re going to figure out a way to get the ball to our playmakers.” NO HOFSTRA HUDDLE Hofstra announced Wednesday that the Aug. 21 practice the Jets planned to have at the Long Island school, Gang Green’s former training-camp home, has been moved to MetLife Stadium due to maintenance projects at the campus stadium as the school prepares to host a presidential debate on Oct. 16. "..we’re going to figure out a way to get the ball to our playmakers.” This will be the reason for an improved offense this year. We do have some playmakers on offense, like Holmes, Keller, and hopefully Hill. Instead of forcing those playmakers (square pegs) into a ridiculously complex offensive scheme (round hole) I believe that Sparano, like Rex, will adjust the system to best fit his players. I'm not saying Sanchez will be on par with Tom Bieber but he will be above average. Jets football! Hell yes!
Sporano was the biggest addition this off season--now we won't Throw on First Down and Run on second down to then throw 3rd and long and out....I like a hard ass like him too..we needed someone like that in the lockeroom.. also can't wait for the play action go long plays..Sanchez plays best moving out of the pocket and using his feet..
Ryan has made no secret that he prefers to simplify matters on offense after the Jets’ unsuccessful early-season experiment to let Mark Sanchez air it out last year ... Yep. That's like letting Lindsey Lohan drive.
Hopefully the line will be solid and the Jets will have the backs to make this work. It'd really help if they had a great back though, a Ray Rice, MJD type that was a major threat running the ball and also a great outlet receiver. Scheme is important but talent makes the scheme work.
Heh. Well, I am skeptical of Sanchez, too, but the logic of where he is, how much the Jets have invested in him, how difficult and prolonged it would be to find a different strarting Qb, meant that the logic of this off season was to find a way to best support Sanchez, give him his best shot at proving he should stay as the starter. I am no Sanchez Fan, but I would agree with many of them that the best way to set this up would have been: Replace Hunter Get a real backup Qb Get Quality interior OL backup Get better blocking at TE Supplement Greene with Quality change up RB Get #2 wideout who will contribute Day One Now I know Hill was the second round pick, and he probably has medium to long term potential. And the Jets got Schillens, who you hear good things about. But the argument could be made that the Jets did NOTHING on that list, and even added a negative you wouldn't have thought about, which is don't distract Sanchez with a media circus (that of course is the Tebow Trade). If I were a Sanchez Fan, I would be pissed.
