Probably just a weight issue, take him a week to drop some lbs and be on the field. Active PUP isnt the worst thing.

meh....no different than the handful of other Jets that will be starting training camp on the active PUP list. As long as he's ready to go by the start of the season, this is largely unimportant.

From what I read this is what was expected to happen. As long as he is healthy and starting by week one I could care less. I would rather him work with trainers and slowly back into it before he goes full force after his injury history.

I wouldnt worry too much about it. If he’s still on it by the 2nd or 3rd preseason game then I would start to worry.

If half of these boom or bust players work out between coples, hill, Landry, and now otah I think we will be in good shape. The only real positive is that the veteran boom or bust candidates are on one year contracts and the rookie ceiling for our two big time rookies is very high and the rookie wage scale makes contracts easier to work with. I think if all comes together we are a contender in this league, if they don't we can cut our ties after this year with the failed veterans and resign the successful ones to a longer deal. Then reevaluate our needs next offseason and in the future as the salary cap permits. It's not a bad philosophy if you ask me, considering we are an 8-8 team a year away from superbowl contention. Boom or just being ok is our fate this season with not too much risk for future years. And hey if we are just ok we put in Tebow and pray for a miracle.

Probably like others have speculated just a weight issue. Not too much other things could drastically change in a week

PFT.com for what its worth....written by Darin Gantt

    mostly nonsense

To the surprise of absolutely no one in the world, offensive lineman Jeff Otah didn’t pass his physical with the Jets today.

But if he doesn’t pass it in the next week, he may become a Panther again.

The Jets placed Otah on the active/physically unable to perform list upon his failing his physical, from which they can activate him at any time. He had knee problems throughout his tenure with the Panthers, which is why he’s played four games in the last two seasons.

But a league source told PFT the trade was contingent on Otah passing his physical with the Jets in the next seven days, or else he goes back to Carolina. The Panthers sent him to the Jets for a conditional seventh-round pick, and then turned around and sent the same to the Raiders for wide receiver Louis Murphy.

In case the Panthers have to take him back, they’d likely try to move him on somewhere else if they could before just cutting him. Ron Rivera was not a fan of the amount of time Otah spent in the training room, and considering the number of chances they’ve given hard-luck linebacker Thomas Davis (three torn ACLs), it wasn’t the injuries themselves which they grew impatient with.

But General Manager Marty Hurney was careful to say all the right things about Otah on the way out the door, in case they had to take him back.

The reality is, the Jets took a flier on him because they thought he might be useful. Having Wayne Hunter as your starting right tackle makes you value other right tackles more highly, it seems.

But the clock’s ticking on Otah to prove to the Jets he can challenge Hunter, or the problem the Panthers thought they pawned off will be theirs again.

Always a head scratcher, when I guy with Pro Bowl talent, has so little self discipline and initiative, that he eats himself out of a promising career.

Our biggest need in the offseason should have been improving the line. Look at the Patriots draft and the Bills defensive acquisitions. Both teams have explosive offenses and now they are adding passrushers. Where is the o-line help! For a team that was built and coached to win in the trenches our personnel blows! The following is flat out scary...

Here is a list of players with the most sacks by age 26:

    1. Derrick Thomas - 58 sacks
    2. Dwight Freeney - 51 sacks
    3. Mario Williams - 48 sacks
    ----------------------------------------
    4. Tim Harris - 48 sacks
    5. Terrell Suggs - 45 sacks
    6. Bruce Smith - 44.5 sacks
    7. Simeon Rice - 44 sacks
    8. Shawne Merriman - 43.5 sacks
    9. Jared Allen - 43 sacks
    10. Elvis Dumervil - 43 sacks

    Bingo!

When the Jets got Jenks from the Panthers he was injury prone. A dominate player when he played.

That just it when he played. Heres hoping Otah plays. If so, a huge upgrade at RT

I refuse to get into an argument with someone who is screaming where is the o-line help in a thread about the jets trading for a former first round pick right tackle. Also that is a very interesting stat about the pass rushers but I bet you don't even know who Q is let alone what it stands for... Maybe you should take some time to study this board and get aquainted with the jets before you go putting down other peoples posts you have only been here for a month. Im not even going to get into team by team philosophy and player personal with you as you will probably respond with a fact about the most consecutive field goals made in the Canadian football league

Cute, I like your attempt to pick an internet fight with me. If football knowledge was based on this board alone you might actually have a point. I can live with the Coples pick. He doesn't really seem to be a fit in the system but Rex is a great defensive mind so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. I just don't understand drafting a project wr in the second with Cordy Glenn on the board. Let's face it the offensive line needed help and he was a 1st round talent. The Otah move now screams of desperation. I doubt he even plays for the Jets this year. Can't wait to see Hunter lined up against Mario Williams. Good Grief! Keep drinking the kool aid that he is a top 10 tackle, all pro, etc. that many on here are serving up.

I can't figure out why you picked that one sentence out of my post. Pretty selective, or you just pick the stuff you can pontificate on.

I pointed out that this wasn't any sort of sure thing, in fact, I stated just the opposite. I didn't say he WOULD be healthy, I said IF he were. And when he was healthy he was one of the better tackles in the league.

Not really the same thing. Woody hardly missed a game most of his career, and started 32 straight when he got hurt in 06 and missed the rest of the year.

Otah has missed 28 of the last 32 and has never played more than 13 games in a season (29 of 64).

Maybe Sparano and Rex can light a fire in this guy, but he just seems like someone who isn't that committed to staying in shape to play football from most of what I've read.

There's no doubt that if the Jets can roll this guy out on a regular basis, he's a top 10 tackle in the league.

Here is a dig from a Carolina writer.
"If Jets doctors have a cure for soft, they have a steal," quipped Gantt, a longtime Panthers beat reporter.
