http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8192370/the-jets-had-tough-2011-was-anomaly-trend Gang Green Forecast It's time to look at the numbers and ask the question: Will the Jets be good this year? By Bill Barnwell on July 25, 2012PRINTYou would forgive Jets fans if they tried to pretend that the 2011 season was washed away by the lockout. It was a pretty rough time. Sure, an up-and-down first 15 weeks of the season is basically de rigueur for the Rex Ryan–era Jets, but Gang Green's magical ability to raise their game at the end of the season and parlay that momentum into a playoff run was somehow transferred to the Giants during that devastating Week 16 derby. The scariest part about the disappointing season for Jets fans, though, was how it came about. New York's offense played at exactly the same level in 2011 as it did in 2010, ranking 13th in the league in points scored in both seasons. The defense, though? It would be tough for them to say the same thing. After allowing the fewest points in football during Ryan's debut season in 2009 and finishing sixth in the league in 2010, the once-formidable Jets defense fell off to 20th last season. A team that allowed under 15 points per game during that 2009 campaign allowed 30 points or more on five different occasions last year, losing all five games. Regardless of what you think about the presence of Tim Tebow and the possibility of an improved offense, it's pretty clear that the Jets will need their defense to return to form in 2012 if they want to make a serious run in the AFC. The presence of Darrelle Revis should be enough to push any defense toward success, but Ryan stalwarts like Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard are either on the wane or off the roster. Are the Jets about to recover and return to the elite? Or does their slide down the points-allowed charts show no sign of stopping? To put the answer to this question in the starkest possible terms, just look at the table below, which has the Jets' rank in points allowed alongside their rank in DVOA during the Ryan era. I do not think that is a fair statistic of how well the defense played when you consider the number of turnovers by the offense. The Jets ranked dead last in points given off of by turnovers with 129 points being given up either during or after a turnover. If the offense improves and cuts down on its turnovers the defense stats will improve greatly.
The Jets D should be #1 this year. With Sporano and possibly Otah instead of Hunter, our running game will be better, keeping the D off the field, rested. Hopefull limiting the turnovers. We have better defensive players this year and this team has a chip on their shoulders. Throw in a relatively weak schedule with poor offenses...
I believe the next worst team wasn't even in triple digits. Besides the Tebow drive, the Jets D was good last year. They need some help from the offense so recognize that it is an elite defense.
The Tebow drive killed our season. The D was not nearly as good as the 6th placed ranking. at oak: D blows 10 pt lead, after O cuts deficit to 7 in the 4th the D allows Oak to milk time and kick FG to end our hopes at NE: Jets get game back to 6 pts in 4th w/ 7 mins left. D allows NE on 6 min FG drive to end our hopes. vs. NE: Up 9-6 late in 1st half D allows NE to go 8- yds in a minute to take 13-9 lead into half. After cutting deficit to 7 pts early in 4th D allows Brady & co to use 7 mins and score a TD. at den: allows Tim tebow to go 95 yds in final minutes vs. NYG: dominating 1st half of play w/ 3rd and 10 from the NYG 1 allow 99 yd TD pass to change game and seasons for both teams. at Mia: Up 10-6 in 3rd allows Matt Moore to lead 23 play drive that took up 13 1/2 mins. The O was worse than the D but the D was not good last year. i expect a much better defense this year.
It is nice we're playing the crappy AFC South and NFC West this year though. Those offenses are just pathetic. Throw Miami into the mix and we should def be playoff bound
Great read. That somehow made me more excited for September. I like Barnwell, he has great takes on all teams.
Take off 129 pts off the turnovers first. Then we will talk. (And I am not even talking about setting the records with 3-and-outs either. The defense was NOT GOOD? Just what are you smoking?)
Not good may be a bit of a stretch but the D was a hge disappointment. Again, the O was worse but we are a D first team and when that unit isn't as good as it should be the team suffers. if the D plays at a similar level to '09 and '10 we easily make the playoffs.
Let's see if you can stay fresh playing 45 minutes on the field (out of 60 minutes.) - or find me a group of defense that can do this. Then we will talk.
The Jets were #9 in 2011, #8 in 2010 and #9 in 2009 in time of possession. http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/average-time-of-possession-net-of-ot So much for that argument...
Great article. Barnwell hits on some big points why the defense will be elite this year. I knew about the offense giving away points (which explains how we were so bad in defensive PPG allowed), but I had no idea about the extra drives we were on the field. That's absurd.
Time of Possession means jack shit. Try defending no-huddle offense that actually works. ToP might look similar. If you think your defense can stay fresh come 4th quarter, you are either complete retard or delusional.
ahhh the fresh excuse. On average the jets O held the ball for 30:49, opponents for 29:11 That tells me we held the ball more than opponents so that bogus 45 min # you threw out is incorrect. Let's check those games I mentioned: at Oak: NYJ 33:14 Oak 26:46 at NE: NYJ 26:05 NE 33:55 vs. NE: NYJ 29:53 NE 30:07 at den: NYJ 32:12 Den 27:48 NYG: NYJ 36:06 NYG 23:54 at Mia: NYJ 28:53 Mia 31:07 In all but 2 games it was either even or a big Jets advantage in TOP and in the Miami game do you think a 12 1/2 min drive can turn TOP? Next excuse please. So now every team we played ran a no huddle? where do you come up w/ this nonsense? Not really, he's passive aggressive. he has me on ignore but whines about and takes shots b/c he's gutless.
