The NBA just announced that, starting in 2013-14, each team will have a sponsored advertisement on its jersey in the form of a 2 by 2 (inches) logo near the shoulder. Jerseys bought by fans will ALSO have these logos. For more info: http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/fandom/post/_/id/6823/nba-to-add-uniform-advertising-in-2013-14 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Will the NFL ever follow suit? What do you think about putting advertisements on jerseys (specifically if it happened in football)?
This is beyond retarded, I really hope the NFL never does this. I don't think they will but you never know.
I hope not, but in the "anything to make a buck" era, you will likely see this in the other sports soon.
I agree, the only reason I don't think the NFL will do it is because they have more than enough revenue coming in where as the NBA has been on a decline.
I don't like it but it was only a matter of time before some North American major league did it. I mean Euro leagues including hockey and football (well, soccer to us) have been doing it for years and years. I hope the NFL doesn't do it but, really, they will do it eventually. The best thing to hope for is that it just stays on the shoulders like this new NBA ad is going to do and not be plastered across the chest like this: That being said: Worse things have happened. It hasn't killed the Euro leagues or anything like that. Also hasn't gotten to the point where the teams are just named after a sponsor which I think we'll eventually see (well, maybe not in our lifetimes but eventually). NY Jets sounds good, NY Burger Kings...not so much. Although it would make for pretty funny matchups/rivalries: "Today's matchup: The New England Nikes vs The Baltimore Reeboks."
I hate this idea. The NBA is a joke anyway, but if the NFL follows suit I will be extremely surprised.
The day they start putting ads on NFL jerseys is the day NFL official jersey sales take a plunge. I'd happily wear a knock off without an ad than a real one with a fucking Tide or Coors Lite logo on the side.
Here's a thought: What if the fact that there is an ad on the jersey now reduces the cost of the jersey? I mean, it probably won't, but theoretically speaking. If it's what the team is wearing and it's going to be like $20 cheaper or something and it's just a little 2x2 ad I could live with it.
The problem with that is once a 2x2 ad gets on someone else will offer far more money for a 4x4 ad and etc, until we have the New York Pepsis with small Jets logos on the upper shoulders...
I don't think teams in the NBA will adopt sponsers names anytime soon. Does soccer even do this? I know the New York Red Bull, but besides that I can't think of any? NFL has too much money coming in, they don't need to do this and they probably won't for a long time. NBA needed more revenue.
The one thing i have learned, is that no one ever has enough money. So if the opportunity is there, it has the potential to happen. You better believe the next owners meetings (next offseason) this topic will come up when the projections of how much addition advertising money this generates for NBA teams...
NFL teams, at least some anyway, are already doing this. The Titans and Jets are two teams that have ads/sponsor logos (whatever the heck it is) on their training camp jerseys. I think it will only be a matter of time before we see ads on regular season NFL jerseys. Beyond the Nike logo, of course.
The old adage is that if you're not growing you're dying... This will come eventually now that the NBA has done it, the NFL just didn't want to be first, (certainly can't blame them)
This is hilarious, thankfully it'll never happen. Jersey sponsorship will be tasteful in big 4 US sports when it gets fully adopted (we won't have to worry about looking like Euro hockey or basketball leagues, ick)...
once you get used to it (as I have with soccer tops) you don't even notice them anymore, its just a part of the jersey.
