That's called Wayne Hunter is a career backup who failed as a starter. 2011 wasn't a "wake up call" to Hunter, it was a wake up call to the Jets FO, but for whatever reason, the FO seems to have slept through it. QFT. If they are using Ducasse at guard rather than at OT, then it's likely: he's simply better suited to playing guard; a lot of college LTs move to RT in the pros and many college LTs and RTs move to OG in the pros, too. the Jets are trying to salvage the pick by putting Ducasse at guard in hopes he does better than at tackle. In either case, it doesn't bode well for the Jets in 2012. Hunter is what he is, and that Carey is still unsigned this late in the off-season says that he's NOT an improvement.
You doubters act like you are experts on why WH sucked. I think Rex Ryan knows more about this than any of us and so does Tannenbaum and everyone on the Jets coaching staff and the front office. Maybe Hunter was injured or maybe Schotty didn't plan to his strengths or around his weaknesses. Maybe the communications were messed up - maybe they didn't motivate him properly. Or maybe they know he's a weakness and will try to compensate in other ways and can only fill so many needs (out of many) in one offseason. Who knows!? We surely don't.
I think it obvious that the Jets knew they did not have the opportunities to address all problem areas on the team. And it's not like RT is the only one they didn't. But it might be the one that could hurt them the most this year. Still I think despite the talk of VD playing guard that the FO had limited options so long as VD is on the roster but not contributing.
I hate to say (and I did last year as well) but the journeyman Hunter caught lightning in a bottle at the end of 2010, and played his alltime best (and he was good) for a stretch that mattered for the JETS, I just wish they would've recognized this, and still addressed the o-line early in the draft as I do not have much faith in Ducasse (I hope I'm WRONG) It happens in all sports all the time, pitchers get hot for a streak as do hitters, Linsanity, even a Buffalo QB until he got a healthy new contract. hmy:
I have to say that I think Hunter will be better this year, we know his weaknesses and we know his strengths...we will know when to add blockers on his side wether it be an blocking TE or having a FB or RB in the backfield for pass protection.
I'm not saying they're supergeniuses, but they are much closer to the actual problems and more able to solve them than you are me. Who do you trust more to fix the Jet's problems, the Jets coaching staff or any person on this board? The answer is obvious. It is also clear that last year was a failure for the offensive line.
Jets crazy ,,I agree he can't be any worse can he ? I agree with Bigblocker,,,,I think for some strange reason they are gambling again / hoping that somehow this career backup / turn style and Vlad both pan out ! I hope it happens but grandpa once said hope in one hand and shit in the other !
The idea that we shouldn't question the Jets FO because they are closer to the situation is one that is often repeated but makes no sense to me. First of all, they make mistakes all the time. Second of all, we're not on this message board to blindly agree with everything the FO does. Thirdly, the success rate of the franchise surely doesn't indicate one that should go without questioning - especially when you look at how they've handled the o-line in the past 15 years.
Rex ain't 'gambling' on WFH. Rex is saying "If those u-tube clips of WFH getting Mark killed were changed to Sparano style ground and pound running plays with man blocking and Tebow in the mix, we should be finer than fine". If Sparano RUNS the ball 50+ times (reverse of the G-girls game) we could have five WFH's on the line, win the game, and Mark walks off the field clean as a baby's bottom.
This is reality. Teams don't run the ball 50 times a game. Furthermore, the Jets don't have the personnel to be a run-first team no matter how much they want to be one. That's the 800-pound gorilla in this fantasy many Jets have of Tony Sparano solving the Jets' offensive problems. Shonn Greene isn't good enough to start on any of the handful of run-first teams currently in the league. He isn't good enough to start on some pass-first teams, either. The Jets OL is NOT good enough to make up for Greene's short-comings as a full time RB in a run-heavy offense. 3.9 ypc, which is what the Jets averaged last season rushing, is NOT going to cut it for a run-first team.
The main thing about Greene is he didn't look to me last season like he had a whole lot more rushing attempts in him.
We just traded for Jeff Otah,,,best thing that could happen FOR us ---Wayne Hunter come here and keep the bench Warm
Wide Open Wayne Hunter should have always been a Third Tackle. That the don't throw him the ball in that situation, kills me. Hell, he doesn't even have to catch it, you just need to back someone of the LoS.
I agree with you that there is nothing wrong with questioning the Jets front-office, but many of the comments here go beyond questioning, where the commentor speaks as if they know exactly what is going on and have the right solution and they know better than the front-office,etc. There's nothing wrong with that, but I'm allowed to call them out for their apparent arrogance.
1. So this FO had a world of confidence for WFH. So much for that story. 2. That said, if Otah stays healthy all season (which I think is a good possibility by the way - he didn't bust his knee last season, if at all) then the RT won't be the problem it was last season. 3. Ok, T-Bomb. Maybe this is not THE best job you could have done, but at least RT is now out of sight (at least for now.) Here's hoping Otah pans out (1) and stays in NY for a LONG time. (2)
