Why would any rational person think Revis is going to hold out (this year)? With the contract he signed, doing so would give the Jets way more leverage by extending his contract for 3 years, handcuffing his future to the whim of the Jets. Of course he doesn't have to play (hence, holding out), but it would give the Jets a lot more power in the negotiation process.
This this this this this. I have yet to see the benefit for Revis holding out now unless he knows the Jets are going to cave in immediately
Thats just wrong in so many ways... This defense is easily top 10 with out Revis. Rex would make it work and Cromartie is one of the more underrated players on this team. Add in a top 5 DL and I dont really doubt we would be a top 10 defense. Problem with that is, is that we would need at least a top 16 offense to contend for the playoffs, which means Sanchez would definitely have to take the next step.
I would argue that it is vastly more difficult to play the slot as a CB then to be on the outside like Revis and Cro. By no stretch am I saying Wilson is the same caliber of player Revis is, I'm saying the depth at the CB position is greater then our O-line depth last year. I was ultimately questioning #24's ACTUAL monitory value on our roster. You can't tell me based on last year and our depth at CB that he is worth more annually then Thor.
I think you mean; without REX? Revis is a player and usually, the system makes the player, not the other way around. In this situation they are BOTH a great fit. The real question is; does Darell Revis know this? Let his ass go to a zone D or a less aggressive Defense. I doubt he garners the $ he thinks he's worth,& as he shouldn't here!
Just read the Mortenson quote: "The Jets, I think they're going to see what Revis does, because he's playing as if he's one of the top five football players in the NFL," Mort said on "Mike & Mike in the Morning" on ESPN New York 98.7 FM. "Everybody understands they may not be a contender without Revis ... He's kept everybody guessing. I'm almost going to be surprised if he's there Day 1." This doesn't sound as certain as everyone makes it out to seem.
He's going to be there. Only an insane person would hold out in a situation in which doing so hands his team all the leverage over the next few years whereas reporting gives him the leverage after 2012 and absolute control of his career after 2013. Darrelle Revis is not insane and he's not going to hand the Jets a sledgehammer. He's going to wait until he has both hands firmly around the handle himself. He'll miss the first day or two with a personal matter that needs to be dealt with. Then he'll show up day 3 or so and he and the Jets will be all smiles.
I have no idea if Rex could make a top 5 defense with no stars available. Other than Revis the Jets have no stars on the defensive side of the ball at this point although they have a few good plus players. The idea that they'd be ranked 25th is absurd though. I have no doubt that Rex Ryan is a good enough coach to keep his defense in the top half of the NFL with average talent on hand.
You underestimate the capability of Rex Ryan too greatly. It not even like this roster does not have a legitimate CB on board either. But then what would you know anyway?
Mort has zero legit info, he is just speculating based on Revis lack of stating, I am definitely going. and that right there is why
What i am saying is Wilson is marginal depth, so far, and after him there is none at Cb. Strickland is gone. There is no one else. Who would be the third cb if Revis were not on the team? The thing it seems to me the Revis critics here don't accept is that the Jet D is based upon having starting cb's able to play man coverage. The roster does not include safeties who are strong in pass coverage. Take out a Revis and there will definitely be an effect no question about it.
