He has a better chance to get sacks because he's only on the field for one reason and only has one responsibility. Its the same reason why lots of guys around the league who are only pass rush guys in nickle/dime situations, and can't produce in any other situations, have a lot of sacks. Marcus Bernard comes to mind, along with Jason Babin, Aldon Smith, Von Miller, Chris Clemons, Antwuan Barnes, Brian Robison, Henry Melton, etc. Most of those guys had over 10 sacks just last year in a role like Maybin. Yes, I think Maybin can do that in his current role, and no I dont think that if he gets 10 sacks or more he will be a super star. Right now, he's never proven that he can be anything more than a role player.

If Maybin can become a 10 + sack non superstar, that means the Jets can get an elite pass rusher (youre talking 12-15 + million a year) for a small fraction of that. Im pretty sure most of us would have a hard time complaining if Maybin is a situation pass rusher getting 10-15 sacks a year with a contract in the ballpark of 3-4 years for < 15 million
I didn’t know you worked for the Jets coaching staff? Im really glad they told you his definite role is limited to just a situational passrusher on 3rd downs. You seem to obviously know everything, especially Maybin’s limitations. When the Bills drafted this guy they thought the sky was the limit for him... And so do the Jets right now, but Im he wont live up to any expectations simply because he couldnt with the Bills.
He is a pass rusher just like all the other pass rushers in the NFL, his job is too get sacks, not to cover TE's, set the edge, take blocks, his job is to kill QB's and he will continue to do that now that he has a coaching staff who understands his strengths and weaknesses and maximizes his ability to get after the QB Maybin WILL have double digit sacks this year, he had 6 last year in limited snap, no camp, got cut and was held on a few other potential snaps. Stop throwing salt dude
I'm not saying that if Maybin flourishes in a pass rush specialist role that it is a bad thing. I dont know why I have to keep repeating myself on this board. Maybin has a role with the Jets that will help the Jets immensely. I think he can come in for nickle/dime situations and rush the quarterback, and there's nothing wrong with that. I just dont think he'll ever be the type of player that can do it all, shut down the run, play every down, be a team leader, etc., and there's nothing wrong with that either. It isn't his fault the stupid Bills drafted him that high and placed those types of expectations on him.

If he means 1 trick pony meaning all he does is pass rush I understand that. If he means he only has 1 pass rushing trick thats just flat wrong. I'm hoping that Maybin with an increase of size can play on second downs much more in case they pass but won't be a liability against the run. I feel like he was only on long yardage or 3rd downs last season.

Maybin was a decent all-around LB in college. Id like to see him go back to being a LB and not just a pass rushing specialist LB. Hes young strong and quick much needed here.
When he was in college his overall athleticism allowed him to be a good LB. When he entered the league, he lacked the size and overall technique to be a really good LB, and he is working on those things now. He may be able to preform well, but if he just has a hard time combining on field reads with that improved technique... It's the same 3rd down role for him.
And I hate to say it but up until now Maybin has been the NFL's definition of a 1 trick pony. He is a situational pass rusher who has one successful move, the speed rush. That's not to say he isn't a useful player, but that's just reality.
Just curious, did you actually watch any Penn State games when Maybin was there? I'm hoping not, because if you did and saw a "decent all-around LB" then I'm forced to believe you don't know anything about football. Maybin never played LB in college, he was exclusively used as a DE. He also wasn't a decent all-around DE, he was a very productive player, but he got by on pure speed. You can do that in the Big Ten, not so much in the NFL.
