He's played 28 reg season games for us, he's caught balls/drawn PI that directly have led to wins or directly set up winning scores in 6 of them(not including what turned out to be the GW TD in the Pats playoff game). That's more than the "odd monster clutch catch". Show me any WR in the game w/ as many the last 2 years.
Gotta love the off-season where Jets fans always predict 12+ win seasons. In the Jets 52-year existence, they have accomplished that feat exactly once.
Fair enough, but do you really think the reason his overall numbers are pretty pedestrian is that he doesn't have enough "heart"? I don't buy it.
I think he has talent and heart, I think he lacks focus at times like many immature players in the league.
I think it does to a degree, I don't think it is realistic to EXPECT 12-4. Could it happen? sure but realistically we should expect anywhere from 8-10 wins. I think it will be more around 10.
Last year, I predicted a 2 game step back...... I have a better feeling this year (just a gut feeling), and will say a 2 game improvement. 10-6 main concerns..... O-line (which in turn could dictate almost everything on offense, espc. the running game), Sparano as OC (who knows... could be good or terrible), and the age/mileage of their LBs if the young guys aren't worth the draft picks.
Holmes's numbers were fine when he was with Pitt. He was their #1 receiver in 2007 and 2009, and the SB MVP in 2008. In 2008 he was second to Ward in total yardage, but his 14.9 ypc was better than Ward's, who had 12.9. Holmes was benched part of that season, which had some effect on his total catches and yardage. But in 2007, he had the most total yards at 942, the best ypc at 18.1 and the most TD catches at 8. In 2009 Holmes again led Pitt receivers, having the most total yardage at 1248, and second best ypc at 15.8 (Wallace, a real sensation that year, had 19.4 but on less than half as many catches as Holmes). So over that stretch, while Hines Ward was having great seasons, Holmes was actually the better receiver. His career stats have gone down since he came to the Jets because he missed four games in 2010, and last year because Sanchez regressed. Sanchez Fans like to throw everyone else under the bus for his failings. We see that all the time. The reality is Holmes had better numbers before he played with Sanchez. That is not Holmes's fault.
You have to question the heart of any player that quits on their team... no exceptions. It has nothing to do with numbers. When you abandon your teammates then you're a selfish douche who doesn't have the right to be considered a "teammate". As to Holmes playing better in Pittsburgh - he was on a better offense with a better quarterback that was better coached. That specific reality does not translate into "the Jets are fucked with Sanchez" like some fans would like to believe.
"Which leads into my next point.Ever heard of developing from within? Trusting in your players to take the next step? Players like Kyle Wilson,John Connor, Mo Wilkerson,Kenric Ellis,Joe Mcknight,Shonn Greene,Nick Ballore, Jeremy Kerley & Sanchez all have untapped potential ready to come to the forefront". Are you really going to hang your hat on that bunch. As a pats fan we have our group we hand our hat on as well hoping they will someday make a play for us. Dont hold your breath. I gave up on Ron Brace and Cunningham and you should give up on Wilson and Green.
I agree you can't bank on all your young players improving but give up on Wilson and Greene? that's silly.
Comparing Kyle Wilson and Shonn Greene to Jermaine Cunningham and Ron Brace makes you lose a lot of credibility. Wilson and Greene were solid players last year, while Cunningham and Brace didn't even see the field.
I dont mean give up. Just dont bank on them. I would love Ron Brace to help out this year and perhaps Cunninghame to grab a few sacks. But as I am not predicting big things from them. They have had enough time to show who they are.
Comparing Kyle Wilson and Shonn Greene to Jermaine Cunningham and Ron Brace makes you lose a lot of credibility. Wilson and Greene were solid players last year, while Cunningham and Brace didn't even see the field. Good point! My guys stink more than your guys in this example. I think Green can step up for you more than Wilson.
But Kyle Wilson and Shonn Greene have shown they are good players that can help a team win. Brace and Cunningham haven't. Are you expecting contributions from McCourty and Chung? Those two would be better comparisons. Edit: Just saw your edit. They're NOT my guys, we root for the same team.
I think McCourty will play well. Chung has always played well for the Pats. With him it's can he stay on the field? It will be fun to watch the LB core this year. Will Mayo play some on the outside? Hightower and Spikes sharing time or lining up next to each other. Two pretty goup hitters right there. That may limit how well Shone Green plays agains us.
"Damn shame history means jack shit going into a season" I think history does matter. It allows the players to believe they can win and not fold up or choke like the last 52 years. I am not trying to be a jerk, as a Red Sox fan I get it. 86 years sucked. Then they won in 04 and they believe they could win and did it again in 07 If you have evey played sports you should know that believing you can do it is half the battle.
Which has been one of Rex's biggest contributions here. He took the something will go wrong attitude and changed it to we are going to the superbowl every year. A lot of his players believed but we didn't execute well last year and failed. Rex is a great motivator and builder of confidence in his players.
Great, we've gotten to the point where Pats fans are debating the merits of Jets players with each other. The Pats boards must be pretty puerile at this point for Pats fans to migrate here to debate each other.
I agree. I think Rex has done a great job of changing the culture. They now believe they can win. Like I said in a previous thread, if the media, fans and players would get behind your QB and the system supported his strengths the JETS would be a very good team. Run the ball more - play great D - don't try and be the Pats or the old Colts. Take your shots when you have them - Mark should go 12 for 20 with no turn overs and a TD. Add a rushing aTD and a FG and your in every game.
