lolwhat Im not sure why you think this guy has absolutely no heart, unless youre a big Cimini fan. Also We drafted Coples for the very very reason of having him out there on 3rd down. Guys like Pouha, Devito are great run stoppers, but definitely not 3rd down Dlineman. Coples is probably our best 3rd down Dlineman on the team. If hes not on the field the overwhelming majority of 3rd downs, then something is severely wrong. If this guy only has 1-2 sacks, it definitely wont be because he wasnt on the field on 3rd downs
I would agree with this. Secondly, I wouldn't be worried much about Coples specific stat line. More with how much time he spends in the backfield, and how many double teams that he draws. Rex said it at the PC right after drafting QC, he will be a guy that causes production from day 1, just like big Mo a year ago. Early on in the year, Wilkerson pretty much was just holding his ground, and working on his technique, and making the plays that came right to him. By the end of the season, he was shedding blocks, and spent a great deal of time in the backfield, even though he didnt rack up many sacks. I expect something similar from Coples.
Considering where he was drafted and Rex's ability to field a great D, it would be disappointing if he had anything less than 3-4 sacks. 5-7 would be a strong rookie showing, 8-9 would be outstanding and 10+ would make him a phenom. Not only will Coples be a help to the D Line, he'll also (if all goes well) help Rex get back to being able to blitz more dbacks like he was doing so successfully in 09. Whether Coples has big numbers or not himself, if he can put some pressure on the QB, which we were so lacking last season, he could also open up a lot of opportunities for sacks by guys like Maybin, Pace, Landry and Bell.
I would be shocked if he was not second in total snaps. He's one of only two starters (wilk being the other) that have the ability to dominate in any front on all three downs. Coples being lazy, taking plays off was a concern of not just negative reporters like Cimini, but from well respected guys loike Mayock as well. His production did drop last season after a stellar previous season. His tool box is elite, but can he bring it all consistantly? If the report out of camp are accurate, we have a monster on our hands. I for one hope so.
You realize Coples changed positions in his drop off year too, right? I'd say he did OK for changing positions while the program was crumbling around him.
Yes I do. I think the programs problems affected him more than he let on. He tried to deny it several times, but I think he should have just come out and said it.
What are you basing this lack of passion off of? Because you just seem like you are talking out of your ass.
He is definitely talking out of his ass. Coples has no motor? Are you fucking kidding me? Thats one of the main things you notice when watching his games...maybe it was inconsistent (this year) but certainly not none existent. Question for this dude, be honest, have you ever even watched an UNC game? If so, did you watch last year as well? But lets be serious, there is no way that is possible if youre describing Coples in this fashion.
Couples-Ellis-Wlik-Maybin/Pace will terrorize opposing QBS most notably up the middle where most hate it
I'd be pretty happy with a 4-6 range, in terms of base expectations. Anything more than this just makes me like this pick more and more.
Sacks are nice on paper but the pressure he generates is more important. I'd like to see the total team sack # go up by 12-15 from last season. I'm sure Coples will contribute to that -- perhaps 5 or 6 -- but allowing guys like Pace, Maybin, and Wilkerson get better matchups since Coples should be disrupting should lead to more sacks for them as well. Be realistic when gauging sack numbers for a 3-4 DE and a 4-3 DT. It's easier out of the 4-3 alignment, although he's still a DT in that. I'm thinking he gets 2 out of the 3-4 alignment and 4 out of the 4-3 alignment all year giving him 6 total. Anything more is gravy for a rookie learning a complex defense at a non-premium sack position (DT basically). That doesn't mean it's non-premium pass rush. If he get 6 sacks, disrupts to help get another 9 indirectly, and has other QB hurries and pressures that force incompletes, tackles for loss, and turnovers via INTs....then he had a great rookie year.
Love his potential but I think he'll struggle in his rookie season. Not because he's a "lazy" guy but simply because of the talent upgrade of his competition once he takes NFL snaps. 2-3 sacks is my prediction but hoping that he'll command double teams consistently by season's end. He's stout enough to be another run stuffer which means he'll get lots of snaps which will help him develop his game. Jets will have a better pass rush because of Coples but don't think Coples himself will be getting the sacks.
i said 7-9 its a little on the high side and i didnt want to under estimate...it really all depends on the formations of the defense and what his assignments are. I would be happy with anything over 5 for a first year, but really think this guy could easily have over 7 if the situations are right.
