Flores stunk with another team and was also considered to be an Al Davis puppet by some people. Coughlin was a good coach for two franchises and was never accused of being a puppet.
Dude they went 10-6 in 2010. What other fanbase wants there coach fired if they go 10-6? IMo if you win a Super Bowl, it buys you 5 years. Thats just me though. Theres 32 teams so, winning 1 super bowl every 32 years is minimum for every franchise. Some win multiple, some fail and win none.
how did all the Al Davis puppets do post Flores? He did stink w/ Seattle but it was a different era, FA was just beginning. If jax came into the league in the 70s or 80s(or '99 or '02) Coughlin would never have been able to have that success w/ them. Jax was considered a SB favorite for many years and never made it, one thing Coughlin is great at is winning w/o expectations, one thing he is bad it is winning WITH expectations. he's a great underdog coach. That's a very misleading record as they won a meaningless game in week 17 to get to that record. The week before in GB was essentially a playoff game and the Giants got steamrolled. They started 2010 6-2 which was another great start like they do every year but they finished poorly which they do every year. if not for 2 teams struggling more than the Giants to end 2011 the Giants don't even make the playoffs last year. You live in the afterglow of a SB win for about 1-2 years, after that people forget and it's time to go after another one. When you win one the expectations are you can win another and the next 3 seasons he missed the playoffs twice and lost at home in their first playoff game in '08. he was rightfully on the hot seat in '07 & '11.
I don't care about perceptions. Again, how was Al doing as the puppeteer w/ the other coaches? he had that reputation w/ everyone. I agree Coughlin has had more success but agin he had a HUGE advantage playing in the time of FA and w/ the expansion rules set up the way they were for jax & Car.
Reminds me of another NY team I know... And I don't even buy that argument, but funny how the perception changes when it isn't your team
what 2 teams were struggling? we got a qtr and a half of Indy backups in a 5 pt game, we got Cincy backups after we took a 27-0 halftime lead. It doesn't matter how they got in but I'm just pointing out a fact that his Giant teams have routinely faded down the stretches of seasons which has led to him being on the hot seat. Fortunately for him he faced 2 teams struggling more and they were able to sneak into the playoffs before playing great football in postseason. Look at Coughlin's st half vs. 2nd half records as NYG HC: 1st half: 47-17 2nd half: 27-37
