Occasional would be ok. He was relentless, every week, every issue and dissed Woody on down to the coaches and never had one positive thing to say. This was not a one time interview. He was trying to create interest in his weekly spot on the back of the Jets. If I was Woody he would never be welcomed back, ever!!! And I am a Jet fan because of Joe and I think he was the coolest man and a REAL Jet fan but what he did was a low blow.

Namath must know the family or something. I find it very hard to believe he'd do this for every season ticket holder that loses a loved one. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice act, but we rarely see stuff like this from him, so I take it with a grain of salt. Usually when you hear about Namath he's bashing Rex Ryan or the Jets organization in a drunken stupor.

I should probably mention the father that passed away has three sons, one younger, one in high school, and one in college. I'm su8re somebody tipped Joe off about the situation but id like to think that he did it as an act of kindness.

I figured you'd remember watching the game, Champ. I think we're the two oldest here. I don't remember seeing the championship game against Oakland, just listening to it on the radio. Wasn't it blacked out in NY? I wish I still had that Daily News from the day after- lost it when I got fired from Met Life a few weeks later. The only thing I regret about that is leaving the paper behind.

I'm thinking my second favorite playoff game was against Oakland but it was the one played there while Walt Michaels was the coach, during the strike shortened season of '82. Tight, tense game to the end, and Walt's rant after the game was priceless. I really thought they'd be going back to the Big Bowl, until the monsoon in Miami destroyed that dream as well as Walt's career. I always thought he deserved better.

btw, thanks for the compliments. I don't usually write so much but the comments about Joe, combined with some weed and a bottle of rum, got me going last night.

great player, one of the greatest, no doubt the greatest Jet

sad that he has morphed into what he has become in his weekly "Bash the Jets for Cash" segment with BigHead and LaDreka on espn radio during the season

I guess it's good I live in Texas. I don't have to listen to all the bullshit you folks do. I get all my Jets info from this site and GGN.

Thanks Carl - great memory shared with all here.

I am at the late edge of my 40's and am a Jets fan because of its impact. Tragically, I was 6 at the time and do not remember it, but I became a sports fan BECAUSE of it.

Once the Mets had their miracle later the same year, sports was my passion. Who knows? I was at the age where every book I read in 2-4th grade was about the Miracle Jets/ Miracle Mets.

Maybe Joe's confidence and magic helped the Mets months later. Shea was the place for comebacks and miracles and I bought into it all. I can't imagine how anyone my age growing up in the NYC area isn't a Mets/Jets fan. 1969 sure as hell made an impression on me.

In my case I started with a clean slate since my father wasn't a big sports fan. I wasn't influenced by family pressures though getting to pick might not have worked out so well ; )

And don't forget the '69-'70 Knicks. They kicked Wilt and the Lakers' asses for the championship that year.

Nobody is saying that they hate Namath. I certainly don't - I have an immense amount of respect for what he did for the Jets and think he's undoubtedly the most important figure in the history of this franchise. However, the guy has done nothing but criticize and slam his team in recent years. And in PUBLIC at that. If you want to make private comments, that's fine. However, when you willingly go on the air to specifically condemn the franchise, all it does is bring further negative attention to compound what's already going wrong.

Some times the best thing to say is nothing at all. I really wish Joe would realize his monumental importance to the team and keep is mouth shut. If not for avoiding sounding like a bitter, drunken derelict , at the very least for not embarrassing this organization.

Well said. I was nine and it was my first year following football. The Jets and Joe Willie were amazing. I must admit that I thought that it would happen again and again. We should have repeated in 1970 but fell just short. That is probably the closet we've been since then. We're all still waiting for the next Super Bowl but even when it happens again it will not approach the monumental experience and achievement of Super Bowl III.

P.S. Even though Joe occasionally says some stuff that he probably will regret always remember that he was the main reason we have a Super Bowl win.

Agreed. "He said things I don't agree with about the Jets. He's a jerk/stupid/bad reporter/dumb person." Get over it people and don't be so easily butt hurt.
