Always thought Mangini got a bit of a raw deal here for blowing the Gholston pick--overall our drafts were very good when he was here, and have went downhill since-- He also made a few good picks and FA signings in Cleveland. You can't deny the guy is pretty smart, and can evaluate talent. His issue was that Bill Bellichick's defensive system became out of date once the NFL created the illegal contact rule. Tannenbaum is a smart, aggressive guy--I like him, but he does not know how to run a scouting department. Rex also doesn't seem to be the best talent evaluator himself.
He doesn't get enough credit for the good drafting while he was here and it's overshadowed by the Gholston pick. I would love to add him to our coaching staff or front office, but wouldn't give him GM duties. He could be an assistant.
No effing way! The Gholston pick (it was his pick) will forever be a dealbreaker for me. His football knowledge is so overrated IMO people make him out to be so cerebral like Pennington but he is not. A hardworker yes, but he's no Mangenius.
Wouldn't mind seeing him back in some capacity, but like Jake said I don't think I'd like to see him in the GM Role also: Can I not quote posts because my post count is still to low?
Its hard to blame anyone for the Gholston pick as well... That draft was terrible overall, and the 6th pick was an awful spot to be. Vernon had great production in college, great measureables, and supposedly a great work ethic--He just didn't have natural football smarts/instincts.
How about foundation guys Revis? Mangold? Brick? Harris? Keller? He also in brought in high character vets like Thomas Jones, Damien Woody,Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, Alan Faneca, Tony Richardson, Drafted some very good role players-- Kerry Rhodes, Drew Coleman, Eric Smith, Matt Slauson, Dwight Lowery, Brad Smith, Leon Washington, Chansi Stuckey. Since him who have we acquired? Tim Tebow, Bart Scott, Jim Leohnord, Braylon Edwards, LaRon Landry, Yeremiah Bell, Plaxico Burress, Santonio Holmes- Not a lot of character Who have we drafted? Sanchez, Greene, Wilkerson, Kerley and a bunch of garbage.... No foundation players We built a team that got to two back 2 back AFC Championship games with one of the worst starting QB's in the league. The core
So we should hire an unqualified Eric Mangini to be our GM and give him on-the-job training the same way that we hired an unqualified Eric Mangini to be our head coach and gave him on-the-job training? How did that ultimately work out for you? The Jets next GM should come out of Pittsburgh, Green Bay or Baltimore. He should have the experience of watching an excellent personnel acquisition regime for a number of years and he should be given permission to actually apply the things he learned at his old place of employment. He should have the ability to make all the appropriate hirings and firings that he sees as necessary to get the Jets to an elite level.
I think its way too early to say rex is or is not a good talent evaluator. However if this years draft class doesn't go well, being that Rex basically handpicked his future defense. Then i might be pretty worried about his scouting talents
Yea cool, maybe we can get Herm Edwards to buy the team while we're at it? Rich Kotite for head of scouting?
Your logic is severely flawed. Tanny was drafting and signing free agents when Mangini was here and Tanny is the one doing so with Rex here as well. The Gholston pick aside, Mangenious is also the one who brokered the trade of the #5 overall pick to the Jets for the #17 & #52 overall and Coleman, Ratliff and Elam. Mangini be a terrible GM in my opinion.
Are you serious? How long have you been following this team? I suggest you refresh your memory on the Jets drafts and FA signings. Becuase you are clearly either confused or full of crap.
Umm.... if someone was willing to offer us the #17, #52, and 3 role players for Mark Sanchez I would be all over it.
