The odds are stacked against Revis. The team has leverage within the number of year's left on the deal & the holdout penalty clause. Although he is the team's best player, Wilson/Cromartie is not a bad tandem. Still though, Revis can't come out & say he won't hold out. That lends the impression that he's happy with his deal, which I'm sure he's not. At this point, the THREAT of Revis holding out is bigger than him actually doing it.last time around Revis took a hard line full defense stance. Very little was said on record to the media & the contact with the Jets FO seemed minimal.Meanwhile Revis went into hibernation. This time around expect the opposite. He won't hold out but will make a ton of noise through the media making hints of a hold out which will never actually come. He bets on an out of control media circuit running with the hot air which will cause an already angry fan base to demand a new deal for Mr. Revis. Sorry 24, this is New York...the fan's know better. You've held out twice already & need to honor your deal.
he probably will. guys a great player but a selfish me guy. personally i say trade his ass he obviously doesnt care about the team or the organization. get some value for him
To be fair, the Dolphins and Bills were awful in 2010 (and Revis' absence probably had something to do with Chad Henne going for 350+ yards on us.)
If he holds out, or even hints at it, trade him. We already paid him a shitload, and he'll be demanding a ridiculous amount next time he holds out. He's a great player, but we can use that money elsewhere. Trade him and get a shitload in return, in addition to increased cap space.
Saw DR at the Taste of the NFL event this evening. Laughed at Cimini asking him the same dumb question at every press conference with no answer. Sent from my SGH-T679 using Tapatalk 2
If he holds out I can see him being traded very quickly. The Jets shouldn't get rid of most if not all of their cap space signing one player when they can find a solid replacement for Revis (obviously not of his caliber but a decent replacement) + more talented players with the money they would be using to sign Revis. Don't forget the 1st rounder or 2 we would get for him.
I should start by saying I agree with the general consensus of this thread, this is a non-story. No way Revis holds out, although he could make it a lot easier by just saying "Yeah, I'm definitely showing up to camp." But I have to say, I'm a little appalled at some of the posts in this thread. Some of you seriously undervalue how good of a player Revis is, and how big of an impact he has on the team. When he takes away a team's best WR, or plays an enormously large zone, he's allowing Rex Ryan a tremendous amount of versatility in his play calls. Trust me, Ryan wouldn't dream of calling some of these blitzes if you took Revis off the team. It also allows him to hide some of the weaker coverage players on the team, without Revis, Eric Smith would have more coverage responsibility. I laugh at people who think because Kyle Wilson is here the Jets are somewhat covered. Even if Wilson turns out to be a quality corner, the drop-off would be severe and it still doesn't account for the fact that Wilson is gonna be on the field for 60-70% of the snaps anyway. Who takes those now? You're now relying on Eric Smith, Yeremiah Bell, and some nobody to be responsible for covering huge portions of the field. The prospect of that should keep every Jets fan up at night in a cold sweat praying that Revis never gets hurt seriously. The majority of the teams on the Jets schedule would have no problem getting production from there passing game. The people saying he shouldn't get paid because he doesn't score TDs make no sense. He's obviously critical to keeping points off the board, which is obviously just as important as putting points on it. Make no mistake about it, Darelle Revis is a rare once-in-a-generation type player, and the only players who make a bigger impact than him are the elite QBs of the league.
There are times I actually sympathize with Jets fans for having to endure the nonsensical BS the NY media dishes out. No way Revis holds out, though I obviously would be happy if he did. Just means the Fins will beat the Jets with Revis on the field.
The reason the media keeps bringing up the question of a hold out is because Revis won't give them a straight answer. "I don't know" translates into "maybe I will or maybe I won't". If Revis really didn't want the media to keep asking him about his presence in TC, all he as to say is, "Yes, I'll be there" or, better yet, "I can't wait for TC to start". You can't blame just "the media" for asking when Revis won't say he's definitely coming to camp.
He's not giving a straight answer for a reason. This is all to setup another big payday for him next year. His agents are telling him to say this, they're smart guys. The media is trying to make it sound like he might hold out this season, which if they had any brains they'd realize makes zero sense from his perspective this year. They probably do realize that and just don't have anything better to write about. So they play right into Revis' agents hands when they get a non-committal answer like that.
If Revis is so goddamned valuable, why did the front office try to move heaven and earth to sign Asomaugha last season? Maybe that was intended to be a hedge against the inevitable holdout they expected from Revis? What other explanation could there be? Rex Ryan's defense doesn't work without the two best cover corners in the league?
He could have just had the crazy notion that having the two best cover corners in the league would make his already solid defense even better.
Sure. By that logic, we should sign every free agent that hits the market if they will make our team better. It just ignores the reality that you have finite funds to fit up your team with. Our front office really fucked the dog with Revis. There is no way a CB is worth the cap space. There's a reason the Patriots are always at least a season ahead of us on personnel trends. Probably by next season we'll have an answer to stopping Gronkowski. By then they'll have figured something new for us to react to.
It's not as though the difference in annual salary between Cromartie and Nnamdi is so great that it would have effected their cap in a major way the following year. Maybe instead of signing Landry to $4M they go with a rookie or a cheaper veteran. Same with Bell, to a lesser degree. And/or they go with a cheaper option at backup quarterback. Top corner play at both spots wouldn't make safety play a huge issue. I doubt going after Nnmadi had much of anything to do with preparing for a Revis holdout (though it would have been a nice bonus) and had everything to do with trying to field the best team.
I generally find myself much more in agreement with your posts than not, but why focus on only Revis's salary when talking about lack of cap space to fill holes on the roster? At least he earns his pay, unlike Sanchez. Some other big contract guys imo are not as overpaid as Sanchez, but do not excel like Revis does, either, like Harris, Holmes, Keller and even Ferguson. Another point is someone who keeps points off the board is just as good as someone who puts them on.
Cimini is the worst, I openly called him out for fabricating the contract story on twitter, His responses this morning: "@roger_kappe Oh, did I fabricate Revis saying he's not sure if he's going to report to camp?" - @RichCimini "@roger_kappe A non-story? You read the papers and Internet today?" - @RichCimini After reading the internets - I quickly found 7 total articles. 4 of them Written by Dick himself, the other 3 didn't even have quotes or sources, Meaning they were just playing off of Dicks crap. I really don't like this guy.
This, except I don't think you'd see him hold out until 2013. This. Without a doubt. And this. I don't think Revis will hold out this season, and agree this is a long-term game his agent is playing with the Jets. It would make more sense to hold out going into the final year of his current deal anyway. But I also don't think it's a "non-story." If a guy has two years remaining on his contract, and says "I don't know" when he's asked if he'll be at TC this season, that's a story. Revis is one of the best corners I've ever seen, but as dominant as he can be, there are other ways to game-plan against a defense that has a shut-down corner of his caliber. Typically CBs are not the game-changers than QBs and offensive players can be. That's not meant to mitigate his achievements, talent, or importance to the Jets... it's just the nature of the game. If your opponent has a CB of his caliber, you simply don't throw it to his side of the field.
