Kidding aside, if the city is genuinely interested in cutting down on sugary drinks, a tax would be the better way to manage it.
The problem is they don't drop dead... We taxpayers help pay for their fatass related medical issues and so on... We end up saving them anyway...
Solution: Mandatory liposuction for body fat composition over 30%. Use the collected fat as fuel. Energy crisis solved.
Can't the Cola companies just add a small percentage of alcohol and get protected under the Constitution?
It's not even just economics, the problem is a large portion of poor communities just have never been taught proper nutrition. It may seem like common sense, but if you don't know any better and you see a 2 liter bottle of soda for 99 cents or a gallon of milk for $3.50, which are you going to buy?
I have to agree here. Im torn because you can't take away people's rights like that, but soda companies just want to you to be addicted to their product (like all companies real, not just soda) and soda is absolutely horrible for you. I have to say, I used to be a huge soda drinker, and ever since I've given it up, I rarely miss soda. The same thing happened when I quit smoking cigarettes. They just don't taste as good as they used to when your no longer a habitual user of the product.
Either way, the government shouldn't be empowered to regulate soft drinks. If they focused on the few things they were supposed to do maybe they would be better at those. I don't mind raising awareness and educating people publicly, but this is out of control. You're never going to legislate against fat people, there will always be fat people, a lot of it is genetic.
There is certainly a genetic component, but I wouldn't say "a lot" of it is genetic. And the genetic components have more to do with predisposition than a determined outcome.
Is the culprit Soda or Sugar? If it's sugar and someone is addicted to sugar and gets it through soda currently won't they just get it through some other means? If I'm getting cafine and sugar through soda and I can't get soda I'm putting 10 packs of sugar in my coffee. Seems to me this law could have been sponsored by Dunkin Donuts.
I drink a bottle of pepsi max like once a month or so, I never drink soda anymore, nothing is truly healthy. We should only be allowed to drink water, thats all I drink these days.
Either way more rules aren't going to fix it, they'll just eat candy bars. People have to figure some shit out for themselves, government needs to leave it alone.
Make taxes for sugary foods like 80% and eliminate sales tax on healthier foods. Make gym mandatory for ALL students (even college). Educate kids more on proper nutrition. Have each kid take multivitamins and fish oil pills daily. ??? Profit.
It's both. The high fructose corn syrup in soda is metabolized differently than sucrose, with fructose being far more likely to be stored as fat than glucose, which is the most readily utilized energy source for cellular respiration. No argument here. Of course, if gov't is going to leave it alone, it needs to leave all aspects of it alone and not subsidize the production of cheap cheap sweetener.
I don't support Bloomberg's plan, but the hysterical whining about people's rights being infringed is misplaced. You're still free to drink as much soda as you want, you just have to buy a refill. The horror! Anyway, if Bloomy really wants to improve public health, maybe he should stop slashing hospital budgets instead of picking unwinnable fights with multinational corporations.
Right. And if you can just buy a refill or buy two or eat a candy bar, why bother with this? He just loves to make rules "for everyone's good", that's what this is about. He really needs to go.
I was a huge supporter of Bloomberg during his first two terms, but he's definitely overstayed his welcome. Unfortunately, none of his potential replacements look too promising either.
It can't be sugar. There's just as much of that in beer, and near as I can tell, I can still buy beer by the yard.
