First year receivers don't usually contribute much in the NFL but I see this kid as an exception. The one quality he brings over pretty much any other 1st year WR is his ability and willingness to block. That is what will get him on and keep him on the field. Sure his height (6'4"), speed (4.3), and vertical (43") will help him succeed in the passing game. I see a very limited route tree his first year designed to open the box for others. His impact will be similar to Torrey Smith of the Ravens last year, except the DB will actually have to worry about being blocked in addition to turning the hips to run. This was a fantastic pick for this offense. He fits exactly what we need and he was a value pick. Best Tanny pick since Revis in my opinion. Now I just hope he can become the impact player for our offense that Revis is for our defense.
The expectations for this kid are through the roof right now in here. i understand we all like his numbers from the underwear olympics... but it would be pretty rare if he came in and made any kind of impact in year 1. id think its unlikely he even gets the snaps to put up big numbers. id expect about 1/2 of what kerley produced last year.
The first time he drops a long bomb it will be hell on TGG... As much as I didn't like the pick I really hope all the best to this guy, firstly because he's a JET, secondly because from all the interviews he sounds like a great guy! Fingers crossed.
This guy caught about 30-40 balls in college. Expecting him to be a major contributor early on is a massive reach. The Jets need to bring back Braylon Edwards (if healthy).
Hill Didn't catch 30-40 balls in his career because he was unproductive, It was because of the offense he was in. Whenever GA Tech called his number, he answered the call! His size, speed, hands and work ethics are going to make up for some of his inexperience's. I do not expect him to be a pro-bowler this season, but I think he will have a big impact on the offense this season by drawing double coverages away from Keller and Holmes as well as helping the running game by keeping the safety honest and his run blocking on the second level.
I expect him to change the offense nearly the same way Edwards did and that won't all show in number of receptions or yards or TD's. He will force teams to put a safety over the top and be a solid blocker in the run game. He'll also provide a huge, fast target for Mark to heave it up to. He had nearly half of the receptions for his team last year. The offense wasn't a heavy passing attack. Obviously he won't put up huge numbers in year one but I expect him to have a big impact. I don't see the Jets bringing back Braylon to take away reps from this kid.
i dont see why he would warrant double coverage. considering he is a rookie with little polish. and the whole "fast guys require you to put a safety over the top" stuff is such a cliche. especially since most teams already play some kind of 2 deep shell as a base anyhow. its usually either a striaght cover 2, man-2, or something of that nature.
No doubt he'll help immensely with run blocking and can make a significant contribution with only one or two big catches each game... I don't think that's outside the realm of possibility. I just think people easily get caught up in the hype due to the guy's size / speed / attitude and have unrealistic performance expectations. He's a rookie and Jets rookies almost never blow the gates off the door. If he finishes the year as a second tier contributor then its a major achievement. The Jets should have low expectations for him and allow him the chance to grow.
I really like this kid's potential. Has great height and speed and flashed the ability to make difficult catches. However, expecting this kid to be an impact player in his rookie year is unrealistic. By year three if everything goes well he could be your #1.
