I'll give you that Smith is good on special teams, but I don't see that securing him a spot on the roster unless one of the rooks look like they aren't going to develop at all. He's just such a liability at S, his tackles are sloppy (though he can hit hard granted) and his coverage is non-existent.

The thought of Leonhard on the pats really doesnt scare me whatsoever from his lack of physical assets and injury risks. But his knowledge of Rex and our defenses on the other hand, not something im partically found of sharing with old billy
I wouldn't worry too much about the knowledge leak too much. They can watch the tapes and do the scouting and get most of the information anyway.
I finally figured it out! We're going to play our safeties the same way we always have under Rex...only now we'll have six of them! Those patsy TEs might still get the best of them, but by the fourth quarter, it's going to be pretty tough to get past all our mediocre safeties, because they'll all have fresh legs!
We may have downgraded somewhat at FS, but not by a whole lot... And Pool wasnt anything more than a guy who could come in on subpackages, and now we have a young developmental guy in Bush who can play over the top and maybe be a big contributor next year. The Jets made a strong run at Reggie Nelson which you have to respect, but Cinci overpaid for just a good player. Im glad that wasnt us. I loved Leohnard, but I just felt/feel like its time we moved on because of his injuries... I would have loved him instead of Bell, but it doesnt make me dislike the Bell signing at all. The FO obviously knows more on that front than we do. And as decent in coverage as Leohnard was, he is far too short and an obvious mismatch against any TE in this league. With two season ending injuries to the same leg, his mediocre athleticism isnt getting any better too. Like Johnny has been saying, our run defense will most definitely get better, which was a major concern last year. Our pass defense was still ranked 5th, despite being abused by TEs... And upgrading athleticism at the safety position and not having Smith start is something to be happy about. Idk, point it, I just dont see how you can be really upset with this signing... (assuming you are, which I could be wrong about)

Just my opinion, but I cant see Landry ever being the same player again. No one has any clue if he's going to be able to play effectively. I think the fact that nobody but the Jets so much as sniffed him in free agency speaks volumes to how bad that guy's injury is. I think Bell brings great leadership qualities. The problem is, at this stage in his career, he's a terrible football player. If you are going to sign talented guys who are injured so bad you dont even know if they're going to be able to play well, why not re-sign Leonhard? I dont get it.

( I Respect your opinion but... )Your Making it seem like we actually even had "decent" safeties come on Jets be honest since we lost Kerry Rhodes and Since Leonard got Injured the day before the Patriot win 45-3 we have had THE worst! Safeties I'm sorry Leonard is smart and always where he should be but has no play making ability.. Same goes for Poole ... Idk all I'm saying we are going from safeties who couldn't keep up because of athletic's or the inability.. To Safeties with Athletic traits and are Vets that have Proved to be at least serviceable when healthy. Rex has a plan and I see better potential with these two playing Rather then the past Safeties
The guy was basically the QB of the defense. When he goes to your biggest divisional rival, id say that's a legitimate concern. Especially considering that their offense is hard enough to stop as it is

I get it. I'm not saying you're wrong or trying to start an argument. But this defense is constantly evolving under Rex. What's information from a year ago is possibly invalid a year later. I'm just not worried.
I think he means 3 corners and a safety as the 4 DB's in those types of sets. It would easily exploited, unless both Coples and Davis are studs out of the gate, if used very often.
Building a team that stops the run is nice, but what about rushing the passer? Is Aaron Maybin going to give you that, especially when he's a liability against the run? Maybe Coples develops into a great pass rusher, but it's not likely to happen this year since he'll also be converting from 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB. Without a pass rush, your DBs become vulnerable no matter how great they are, and right now, you've got safeties who are liabilities in coverage, so you limit the CBs' effectiveness even more. There comes a time when smoke-and-mirror schemes fail under the lack of talent.
