Quinton Coples, taken 16th overall by the Jets last month, has signed his rookie contract, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. It’s the standard first-round deal, a four-year contract with a fifth-year option. A defensive lineman out of North Carolina, Coples has been talked up as a tremendous athletic talent by the Jets’ brass. Now his contract is done, and he can put all his focus on learning the defense — which he says he’s already done. ********** The Jets and first-round pick Quinton Coples have agreed to terms on a four-year deal with a fifth-year option, a person with knowledge of the deal confirmed. That person requested anonymity because the team has not announced it. The terms of the deal were not immediately available. Coples was selected 16th overall out of North Carolina. The Jets believe the versatile defensive end can play in many spots along their defensive line, and position coach Karl Dunbar also said that he's an "awesome fit" for the 46 defense developed by Buddy Ryan and carried on by Rex Ryan. Coples is the sixth of the Jets' eight draft picks to get under contract. The rookie wage scale under the new collective bargaining agreement makes rookie deals much easier to strike. Still to sign are third-rounder Demario Davis and seventh-rounder Jordan White. The Daily News first reported Coples reached a deal.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they're already liking Davis so much that they're looking to keep him around for a long time, hence trying to find a balance and setup that is appealing enough as a rookie contract over an extended amount of years. Just a blatant guess, tho.

He's a rookie. I understand its a guess but the maximum contract they can sign is 4 years for around 8 million dollars. And without playing a single down in the NFL I seriously doubt they have any intentions locking him up "long term".
He is a rookie. Although the same thing could be said about Coples, who got precisely that big long-term rookie contract. My gut feeling is just that Rex seems to have fallen head over heels in love with that "die-hard-Tebow'ish-blessed-beyond-belief-conviction-to-make-it-to-the-top-and-I'll-take-everyone-with-me"-mentality that Davis appearently seems to have impressed the coaches with, and also having the track record backing him up being that type of a guy. So I can really see Rex wanting him around for a long time, since that kind of mindset is uncoachable, while his skillset is. If they find it reasonable to sign that Aussie bloke (albeit for minimum cash) to a 3-year deal, before he had even worn a football helmet, I don't find it too far-fetched to see Davis pick up a maximum long-term contract (adjusted to when he was picked up in the draft).
The hell are you talking about? Coples signed the identical contract (length wise) to every other first rounder 4 years with a 5th year option. Beyond round 1, I believe, and somebody correct me if I am wrong, that the maximum length is a 4 year deal. Which is standard for all draft picks now. So I have no idea where you are going with this line of thought...
