2 lbs a month is right around the absolute max that you can gain in a month unless you're a noob or on steroids or black
FTR, I kinda wanted us to pursue Michael Bush in the Offseason. I'm not too keen on our cap, but I know his contract with the Bears is 3.5mill/yr for 4 years (with 7 mill guaranteed); not sure about the guaranteed $, but the yearly salary seems about right based on his performance last Season. Back to McKnight. Not to state the obvious, but some players just don't "get it" right away in the NFL -- they develop slowly. I think this is the case with McKnight because he has all of the tools and athleticism to be a dynamite RB, especially in a coherent scheme. And with the Jets drafting RBs the past two Offseasons, McKnight should now feel a greater sense of urgency to bring his talent to fruition. Combine that with a better understanding of Offense/Defense, along with the game naturally slowing down for him, and he should take the next step this year. Regarding ball-protection: I'm almost certain it's an attribute that can be taught; I've heard of RBs improving this skill over the course of their careers (was Tiki Barber the notable one? I can't remember). I'm not sure about McKnight's skill in pass-protection, especially picking up the blitz, so if anyone can drop some info on that, I'd appreciate it. Anyway, if McKnight pans out, and it happens this year, I can see Tanny/Rex letting Greene walk and then form a rotation using McKnight/Ganaway/Powell.
interesting...i bet you would struggle through both programs... im finishing P90X now, lost 18 pounds of fat and have seen some serious muscle gains... but hey you can do all of the above you mentioned and plateau out after a while if youd like
McKnight will develop (another 2 yrs) into LT as far as 3rd down back grabbing passes out of the BF. Between the tackles? Maybe. Maybe not. Reggie Bush (similar size) does his most damage between the tackles when giving the chance.
Well they are 2 different things. Anybody who says p90x isn't a real workout clearly hasn't tried it. On the other hand, you aren't going to continue to gain real mass from p90x so I'm not sure what you're talking about when you imply that people who do the traditional routine will "plateau out" as if that does not apply to p90x
P90x isn't a real workout in the sense that its based around gimic made up infomercial terms, and is essentially glorified fullbody cardio. Most men would consider A real workout blood and iron, real free weight total body resistance based exercises. If someone thinks they're gonna get jacked doing plyometrics or some pansie ass resistance band based exercises or using a 20lb dumbell they are mistaken. Any real man knows the essence of a real workout is built around the Squat Bench and Deadlift. And anyone could theoritically plateau with any workout plan, if they either pansie out/eat like shit/ or the by far least likely reach their genetic limit.
Sorry to digress a bit, but I've played organized Rugby for 6 years and have been going to the gym for longer than that so I know my way around the weight room. What you're saying about the P90x is just ignorant. When I moved far away from any gym (about 25min drive) I decided to give p90 a try and saw amazing results. I followed the workout plan 100% and the diet plan about 50%. I lost body fat, gained muscle, and my abs looked shredded. You use whatever weights you are comfortable with, as with any program. If I could do 10 reps no problem, I'd move up in weight. I was using 75 lb dumb bells for rows. That may not sound like a lot but I'm 5' 8", 170ish and that's in accordance with 2 other back exercises, no rest in between sets. Bottomline is it can be a huge investment with buying the weights and dvds, but I'm stronger, healthier, look better, and am in better shape thanks to p90x. It is NOT one of those gimmicky programs that Chuck Lidell promotes, it is a real workout program, and its going to kick your ass, I don't care how much you can deadlift.
Not to be all Thread Police, but can you guys take the personal-exercise-debate to its own thread? (I'm actually hoping you do because it's informative). I've been checking this thread occasionally - when there are new posts - hoping to read and discuss anything more and/or new on McKnight, but there hasn't been anything other than the ongoing workout debate; the thread is about to completely derail.
If you were seriously (and correctly) going to the gym for over 6 years you wouldnt be able to legitimately lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. Thats usually predominately with newbies. And if you were properly lifting that long youd also know that strength or hypertrophy gains come predominately through low rep/high weight combos, so the idea that youd gain muscle when switching to the fat burning circuit training based p90 is laughable. Especiallly since you should already have a significant amount of lbm from the many years of lifting, so theres no way the cardiovascular p90 would stimulate legit hypertrophy Now ive had enuf stealing mcknights thunder
Of course you can, muscle burns fat after all. But I thought you were referring to p90x (emphasis on the x). If you were talking just about p90, then yes, I believe that is geared more towards cardio work, and then you would be right. Back to McKnight. Good to hear he gained the weight. He has the skillset to be a good back in this league, he just needed experience and a bit of maturity. I legitimately think he could start next year.
@Lon Chaney You cannot gain 2 pounds of muscle a month without steroids or if you do EVERYTHING correctly and have NEVER lifted a day in your life. Do people realize how much 2 pounds of muscle is? Um, probably not. P90x and Insanity are just cardio programs designed to test the average male...I'm a boxer, my cardio HAS to be top-notch to compete at high levels. As for you implying that P90x and Insanity are better because you might not plateau as quickly, that is just ridiculous. The reason you don't plateau on those programs is because you're always doing light weight, so you can't really plateau, unless it's max reps. Exactly. And while a big part of my routine is plyometrics for football, an entire workout routine dedicated solely to cardio and plyometrics is retarded. If you want real strength, you need to squat and deadlift. Yeah, doing P90x and having an Auschwitz-like diet may get you "teh abz0rz!" that no one gives a shit about and have no applicable use for anything, but doing an actual program like 5/3/1, Starting Strength, Pavel's 80/20, etc. will get you much quicker (and better) results. 75 pound DBs, while not horrible, isn't that great (but at least I'll give it to you that you're doing rows, which is a start). Also, as I said above, having visible abs means nothing. It isn't applicable, and while it means you have lower bodyfat percentage, it doesn't mean your core is necessarily strong. If people really want a killer cardio program, do some high intensity jump roping for rounds.

My story: Start: 180 pounds (mostly blubber, i had a desk job), max lift (free) 90 pounds, 1 rep. 14 months later: 180 pounds (ripped), max lift (free) 220 lbs, 18 reps. I was proud. 10 yrs later: 180 pounds, mostly blubber.
Thanks, I wanted to add to the p90x thing but didn't want to be another person digressing so I just posted there. But yeah I could see Joe doing big things for us with or without the 15 lbs, the kid is quick and has decent vision. I think he will be a key part of the wildcat this season.
McKnight can turn out to be the dark horse in our season. If the kid comes on and shows something we can have a pretty nice tandem with him and SG.
I'm not real high on McKnight. If he can elevate his game, he could potentially help the team with speed and explosiveness....perhaps some big plays. I don't see how bulking up helps his speed. It would help if he took a lot of carries, or ran between the tackles more, but i don't see that being his role.
