Some great tidbits and notes on Revis '11 season from Cimini via ProFootball Focus:

How good was Darrelle Revis last season? According to ProFootballFocus.com, the stats-oriented web site for hardcore fans, the Jets' All-Pro cornerback was the fifth-best player in the NFL.

In case you're wondering, the top four were Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, 49ers DE Justin Smith, Saints QB Drew Brees and Lions WR Calvin Johnson. PFF released its top 101 just last week. The only other Jets on the list are DT Sione Pouha (36) and C Nick Mangold (46).

Here are some ridiculous numbers on Revis, as compiled by PFF:

    • He allowed just 41.2 percent of all targets to be completed.

    • He led NFL with a QB rating of 45.6 on passes into his coverage (among qualifying corners).

    • He allowed just 26.1% of targets in fourth quarter to be caught for a QB rating of 1.3.

    • He recorded 20 total pass breakups (interceptions + passes defensed).

    • He allowed just one touchdown all season despite 85 targets (eat your heart out, Stevie Johnson).

The current storyline with Revis has shifted to off the field -- i.e. his contract situation. He has two years, $13.5 million remaining on a four-year contract, and Revis is thought to be seeking a new deal. Recently, he didn't rule out the possibility of holding out of training camp as a way to get a deal done. Things have been rather quiet the last two weeks. Too quiet.

    Praise be?

Last thing we need is a hold out. This will just feed into the media's "broken team" and maybe the demise of Ryan's tenure. If business is business then things might get dicey. Hopefully this is all just the media trying to create more drama for our team and we can actually have a season were we build together as a team not as individual players on the field.

I love Revis as a player... But he could go f*ck himself if he holds out again. Kris Jenkins said it best when he told him to leave the contract situation alone and worry about football and being a leader.

Revis had a great year for a normal player but by his standards he wasn't anywhere near as good as 2009 or 2010 after he got healthy(2nd half and playoffs).

Idk, I think 2009 was obviously his best year so far, but last season he was used differently by the staff.

I think they wanted to get more big plays out of him so they used him on differant guys instead of the opponents no 1. sometimes or they would try to hide or shade who he was covering... He did end up with some bigger plays in 2011, so overall I think he was better than in 2010.

best defensive player in the entire NFL

the Jets should just kiss the ground in joy over having drafted him in 2007 and then, at the end of this season (or during) give him a long term extension to retire as a New York Jet and head off to Canton five years later

he was still great but I think he was better in 2010 after he got healthy, I never saw any WRs doing to him what Marshall or Johnson did to him.

He is not the best defensive player in the NFL, he's the best CB in the NFL.

Jets will not give him a long-term contract. He will, once again, holdout and the Jets will unload him for draft picks.

He's the best player at his position in the league, no one plays their position better.

Always great to have a bonified fortune teller on the board so we don't have to wait and see what actually happens.

Let's see, Revis has already held out TWICE.

He's licking his chops at the contract Mario Williams received.

Do you seriously think the Jets will sign a CB to a long-term, $90MM+ contract? Even the Jets FO isn't that dumb.

The alternative to that is Revis holding out.

SO your saying there is a bigger gap between the #2 player at any other position than Revis at cb? Lets take a look

    QB

    #1 Rodgers
    #2 Brady/Breese

    RB

    #1 AP
#2 Maybe CJ (pretty big gap here)

    FB- Who Cares

    WR
    #1 Megatron
    #2 Fitz

    TE

    #1 Gronk
    #2 VD

Feel free to support your statement with real examples not just “popping off” I would argue that before his knee injury, AP was far and away better than any other back in the league.

I hear ya, he's always amazing. Its pretty incredible the standards he's set for himself- The fact that we can look at the Marshall and Johnson games as slip ups when they literally might have caught him napping a few times.

Marshall had a pretty good game against Revis in their first match up but No TDs and Revis had a 100 yard return for TD so he pretty much negated everything Marshall did. Second game he finished with 1 catch for 5 yards..

Not to feed the Bills trolls, but Johnson probably had the most success of anyone against Revis ever this season and even that's not like he put up these amazing numbers.

3 catches for 84 (aided by the 52 yard catch - which I'm not sure if I remember correctly but I dont think Revis was on him there - and even if not that's one play)

the second matchup Johnson played very well against Revis and caught him good on a small slant for the ONLY TD he gave up all season. (then he proceeded to go into his jack-ass shooting himself routine)

but the second half of that game Revis tightened up and shut him down.
