Based on yards allowed, which is a ridiculous metric since it punishes teams who score quickly on offense. They were 15th in Points allowed per game.
Points allowed skews the stat to offenses and special teams that turns the ball over less. Yards is probably less indicative of a defense than points, but points still leaves a lot to be desired.
Probably true, but it is the best metric for easily determining the quality of a defense we have, since points are all you really care about over the long run.
Yeah, agreed. I hate though that the NFL includes picks sixes, kick return TD's, etc into defensive points allowed. It never made sense to me
yeah I think football outsiders would be better off doing things like eliminating that, analyzing scoring off short fields etc. rather than their current DVOA which is pretty useless since while it attempts to normalize yardage based on situations and opponents still makes the basic mistake of thinking yardage is actually important in comparison to scoring. One of the things the Patriots and a few other teams who have mediocre defenses do is try to minimize big scoring plays, which often means they give up more 3-8 yard plays between the 20s, which skews yardage numbers but doesn't in reality lead to much more scoring.
Nothing the Jets could do in this draft would allow them to overcome the fact that the Pats have an elite QB and we dont and so whilst we could maybe make up some ground we could never overtake them, so its just not a realistic aim.
I think the Pats were trading down in the draft because of the high cost of top picks. Now with the new CBA draft picks are a lot more economical so the value proposition of moving up is a lot more attractive to the Pats.

They were nearly always picking late and cost was only ever really a top 10 (or even a top 5) issue. I think Belli just felt he could make more out of less and so was happier to take lower ranked (but still 1st round quality) players either later in the first or early in the second and just accumulate more picks.
The media wrote some articles saying that Belichick "lost his touch" after two consecutive losses to the Steelers and Giants. Those writers basically tried to make the point that Belichick had ruined his Superbowl chances by getting rid of Merriweather, Sanders, and Bodden. They suggested that his poor decisions in the offseason were too much for him to overcome as a coach, and that the New England Patriots could no longer match up against 'elite' teams as a result. While many fans were unreasonably upset at that point, very few took it to the extreme that the media did, and pretty much no one was actually calling for Belichick to be fired.
I remember the media getting all twisted up when they lost two straight for the first time in eight years or whatever it was, but I don't think anyone (even Borges) was calling for his head or saying he should be fired.
