No question Coples is extremely talented and anyone who saw him play in 2010 or at his pro day realizes what a freakish athlete he is. What I'm confused about is where he plays and how it effects the overall defense. Rex said he will play left end. Are the Jets expecting him to be a 5 technique 3-4 end? Isn't that the position that Mowilk played last year replacing Ellis? I don't feel like the Jets even run a traditional 3-4 with 2 gap responsibilities. Last year in most situations the Jets seemed to have 4 guys in a 3 point stance. Would Coples be the 4th guy along with Pouha, MoWilk and Devito on 1st and 2nd downs? Will Coples replace Devito on all three downs? This is my big questiona bout Coples, is he the 4th linebacker/4th down lineman or is he the third down lineman?
Rex said he will play left end and move inside on obvious passing downs so you will see a lot more 4-3 then we have in the past much as you saw in NE last year.
So they want him to compete with Devito. I don't get this, we really drafted 3-4 defensive ends two years in a row? Hasn't Rex turned undrafted free agents like Devito into very solid players at this position? How are we expecting this guy to make a difference in the pass rush if he has 2 gap responsibilities?
Devito was very solid against the run, but we couldn't leave him out there on passing downs because he got no pressure. He became a liability on passing downs, so we had to sub in and out packages. My hope is that Coples can be used on all 3 downs to limit the constant d line rotations.
Coples has that speed to set the edge on defense. Something we really lacked last year. Coples is taking Devitos job. not competing..
It seems like they have a lot of options of what kind of front they want to run. Especially if they can get Upshaw or Curry at 47. Mo and Coples can play all over the line.
I dont think its really important to know his set position. I think Rex is going to be moving him all over the place with a million different fronts. Our defense is always changing throughout the game. In Rex I trust! lol
i dont think we play a true 4-3. harris doesnt have the sideline to sideline speed to play the mike in that formation. i think qcoples will play the 5 technique mostly.with his pass rush skills it will open up a lb to get some free rushes at the qb
I know it's unlikely but if the Jets do manage to get Upshaw this defense is going to be straight up nasty. Especially if Landry can stay healthy and play like he did at the beginning of last season.
Rex switches up his scheme so much who knows what we will run well prob see alot of different looks with these guys.
