Hey, the Jets swang for the fence on this pick. He just might be the best pick in the draft, but he just as easily may not. The Chiefs did the same thing with Poe. He has huge upside and some red flags, and the Jets went for it. There were certainly surer, safer picks available at that spot, that maybe didn't have as high a ceiling. Only time willl tell...
The Jets obviously saw Coples as a 4-3 DT who got moved outside to DE last year and then had his play drop off some. He had 10 sacks at DT in 2010. That's the kind of pressure Rex is looking for. So they took a 4-3 DT and are going to make him into a 3-4 DE. Rex knows leverage. If he didn't think Coples could play 3-4 DE he wouldn't have ok'd the pick. Instead he apparently told Coples last week he was going to be the pick.
No. Gholston never even played a good game for the Jets. I think the best he ever did was half a sack in a pre-season game. In 3 years he never had a sack with the Jets. Maybin had 6 in not even a full season with the Jets.
gholston got moved from DE to linebacker. never understood it. Q can play any position up front, and his senior year dropped off when he was moved to DE(only 7 sacks, no learning curve allowance?) Any respectable mock had him going to us, or above, so I am content.
Only a few million? That's not a big paycheck? How much was he making in HS and college? So once he signs his contract and has $$ in the bank, even if it isn't Gholston's millions, you think he will suddenly be more motivated. What do YOU not get?
I heard the pundits say he was pretty flexible and could play 3-4 or 4-3. There was one analyst who was talking about Rex's 5 man defensive 3-4 scheme where Coples would be playing the open weak side. Not sure what that means maybe someone could elaborate.
Coples is one of the guys I wanted (see sig) so I'm happy. He's a giant who moves extremely well for his size. His combo of speed and size is something that this defense desperately needed. Also, keep in mind that Rex doesn't play a traditional 3-4. There's lots of slanting, and lots of pinches on running downs. Coples will be more than capable as a run blocker, and then will play more of a 4-3 DE position on 3rd downs. Would of preferred DeCastro, but Rex knows his defense. I trust him in this pick.
Actually, I just checked about 10 mocks, and 5 had Coples going at or near 16 and 5 had him going further down. As far as all the mocks having him top 10 or 12, not the mocks I've seen. Pat Kirwan is one of the few I saw that had him top 10.
Another thing the analysts said that wasn't a good omen was that Coples only scored 1 out of 5 ELP's at the combine. ELP = Evaluated Like Peers which means in only 1 category (speed) he exceeded the average score amongst his peers at that position.
The Jets got great value yet again on the defensive side of the ball and are continuing the trend of picking up great young talent for the third year in a row under rex. Lets face it Devito isnt the immediate answer at DE while pace and thomas are still on the roster. Will the olb need replacing sure but if you really look at it a upgrade was needed at both positions and we got a hell of an athlete and now a hell of a front three with Pouha and hopefully Ellis at nose, and Wilkerson as the other de, going into the future. Which by the way is what the Patriots leaned on all those years they had a great Defense and were winning superbowls.
Coples and Maybin will be on a nice weight program Maybin needs to get to 245 at least Coples can hopefully get to 295-305 I'm loving what we're doing, if Woody keeps Rex as head coach forever we can have a stout all time great defense. You start with the line, the line was incomplete as we needed a guy opposite Wilkerson We have a great secondary, very good line and our LB's need work but they aren't bad the Giants had horrible LB's last year and a great front 4 Like I said you cant judge a guy until Week 17 when its all said and done I got faith in QC, he'll be defensive rookie of the year
I'd really love to comment on the topic, but I'm too busy laughing beer through my nose over pick #15.
He played with Muhammad Wilkerson at Hargrave Military Academy for what its worth Rex basically said he has Richard Seymour and Shaun Ellis/Trevor Pryce as his DE's, I'm convinced Great work guys
Yeah, hearing that made me uneasy. If a guys not motivated in his senior year I don't know how motivated he's gonna be with a pocket full of money? I don't profess to know the college prospects well enough to make a judgement but the whole lack of motivation thing really doesn't sit well with me.
Seems like we just took a clone of Wilkerson? Every player has bustability, but Ingram made more sense. He or Reiff should have been the pick. As of now we have turnstiles ducasse and hunter battling for the starting RT job.
At the combine Coples was being evaluated against the 4-3 DE's. He was a 4-3 DT playing out of position last year. He had two head coaches and 4 coordinators in 4 years at North Carolina. He didn't bail on the team after his junior year even though he'd had a monster year at DT and would have been a 1st round pick. I think there's a lot to like about his potential and I'm not going get turned off by a year in which he performed well overall amidst the chaos of a program under sanction, with coaches coming and going through a revolving door, and at a position that was not his best.
I'm happy with the pick Sione Pouha, Mike DeVito and Ropati Pitoitua are our veteran leaders Muhammad Wilkerson, Kenrick Ellis and Quinton Coples are our young athletic guys Rex has built his line(the most important part of the D) I cant wait til tomorrow
