I'm 1000% about taking defense but if the value isn't there I'm 1000% against reaching for for a defender. I'd be okay taking Floyd if the Jets go LB in the 2nd
I wouldn't hate Floyd, but I don't support it either. I like him as a player, and the Jets need a receiver. However, if the Jets are going to be a run-first offense, and it really looks like we will, a first round receiver makes as much sense as trading for another QB right after giving your own starter an extension.
JFM - I usually agree with your posts, but I have to call you out on your assessment of drafting a WR in the first round. One pick doesn't make or break your teams philosophies. First off, if Floyd is the BPA (and if he's around at 16 he most likely will be) you take him. It's not like we're stacked at receiver either. Secondly, and this is unrelated to your post but I don't see this team playing a classic ground and pound style. First off, we don't have the horses in the backfield for the ground and pound to be highly effective. Secondly, with the rule changes over the past couple of seasons and the evolution of the NFL the old school ground and pound is becoming extinct.
I agree that the NFL is gravitating more and more towards the pass happy offense, but that doesn't necessarily mean ground and pound can't still be successful. If Lee Evans knew how to hold onto a pass and the PR for the 49ers (name escapes me) could catch a damn punt you would've seen a SB that paired two identical teams. Smash mouth football with QBs that manage the game coupled with stellar defense. There isn't a 'one size fits all' approach to succeeding in the NFL in my opinion.
Here's the thing though....teams will know that we will try and be a run first group....essentially stacking up guys in the front to stop our running attack...which is where a weapon like Floyd comes in handy. Floyd would be a great red zone target inside the 20(Forget inside the 5, we'll ground and pound there) that will demand double teams(Keller will feast). Likewise he is a great downfield blocker and can make the 1st down conversions. I love Jeremy Kerley but he doesn't have the upside or ability Floyd has. Tebow needed D. Thomas last year, and I feel Floyd is miles ahead of Thomas in development when Thomas stepped into the league. You have to pass in this league to win. No other way around it. On paper pure running sounds fine....but teams won't be stupid enough to just let us waltz our way through. It'll get us by 3 or 4 games sure but if we wanna be a super bowl contender than we need to start having some form of a passing attack. Getting Floyd starts that.
Lot of Floyd love in this thread. Sorry he just doesn't do it for me. I fully believe at 16 he won't be the BPA and while wide receiver is a big need, the depth of the position in this draft as well as the other factors that Manish outlined is good reason to pass on Floyd. Plenty of players I take over Floyd including; Barron, Hightower, DeCastro, Upshaw, Ingram, Reiff and Glenn.
I probably can't convince you otherwise but Floyd's a lot better than what you are giving him credit for. I have him as a top 10 talent so obviously going at 16 is a heist. Manish doesn't know what he's talking about...he's a fool if he thinks a one dimensional offense is gonna cut it in 2012.
Do you believe the drop off in talent between Floyd to the round 2 WR's is as big as the drop off in talent of 1st round OLB/OL to round 2 OLB/OL? I think after we get passed the first round, good 3 down OLB's are going to be very scarce.
The best and only way we are getting to a SB and winning it is by Sanchez becoming a top flight QB. Fact of the matter is our offense was beyond dreadful last year and is far and away the more needy of the units. I highly doubt Floyd makes it to 16 but if he does he is more than likely to be BPA and fills a huge need. This is a no brainer decision if Floyd is available. Run first offense doesn't mean run only.
it would be a dream come true if we drafted david decastro in round 1 and alshon jeffrey in the second. decastro would help our line for years to come and help in the running game. alshon catches anything that comes his way. also is decastro opens up the running game, then you set up serious play action to jeffrey/holmes
I'd puke if they take Floyd or Poe. NYC is the wrong town for Floyd and Poe is a project(and we just took a small school NT project last year)
And then trading the backup QB you signed earlier at a $500k cap cost in a year when you are up against the cap. That sequence has to get marked down to desperation/grasping at straws. That doesn't bode well for this draft or for the 2012 Jets.
