If we agree the draft is a crap shoot, then we have no idea whether Richardson is a "once in a decade player." The point is you don't trade up (!) for a RB with all the other holes on this team. And you don't give up picks for a position that is handled more and more by committee. And there is a RB every other year who is considered a "once in a decade player" and they rarely work out. I pass (no pun intended)
First, let me say I want no part of a trade up to T-rich, unless he slides down into the 7-10 range. Even then i have serious trepidations about doing it. The draft as a whole is a crap-shoot. But there are ways to determine which players are going to be successful and which guys won't be. You don't receive the 'once in a decade' tag at any position by accident. You have to be a damned good player with pretty limited risks. This year we are blessed with 3 guys with that label. Andrew Luck, Trent Richardson and David DeCastro. If you get a chance to add one of those guys, you do so, and don't look back. Thats my philosophy on this sort of thing.
Completely agree rule. Theres part of me that would love to trade up to the 7-10 range for Richardson, but another part that wants to just stay put and keep our picks... Richardson would do more for this team (on the field and off of it) than any other player in the draft. He’s the type of player that will push everyone around them in the gym, on the field or in the in the film room. We lack those type of personalities, and that is something that should be considered too. All that aside, on the field he brings the demeanor this team has lacked and he will actually strike fear in opposing defenses and drive DC insane trying to gameplan around him. We are probably all overreacting about a phone call, but I know that in the end I will be welcoming T Rich with open arms if he were a Jet (which is about a 2% chance) simply because of the type of impact that he would have on this team.
And in 2006, there were a number of can't miss "once in a decade" players - Bush, Young, Leinart, Williams. And not one of them proved to be anything close to that and none of them are on the team that drafted them. Every year we here that the draft has 3-6 elite players and every year that proves to be wrong. Take a look at the top of the 2009 draft. The bottom line is that nobody knows - not you, not me, not the GMs who get paid big money to make these decisions. So, all in all, in a year where the Jets do not have the luxury to give up picks, trading up for Richardson would IMO be a huge mistake.
Yeah, the more I look at this draft and what the Jets need, the less I'm interested in moving up for anyone. If I move up for anyone, it would be for Richardson, but only if we could hold onto our 2nd this year and our 1st next year. I doubt he'll fall enough where we can make a deal like that. I love what Richardson provides for this offense if we got him. I just don't want to mortgage so many other positions for runningback. The Jets' ground and pound 2 years ago was Jones, Leon, and a rookie Greene. They were effective mostly because of the run blocking. We need to get our OL back to that level, and moving up to grab Richardson won't fix that, and it will hurt our ability to fill the OL and defensive holes.
Outside of the 2 QB's, Richardson is clearly the best and most complete player in the draft. With that being said, it'd be foolish to trade our 2nd rounder (and who knows what else) to move up into a position where he's still on the board. This one is a pipe dream and a nightmare combined into one. Next.
My question is simple......do you take a OLB in the first and instead of tading up for T-Rich do we trade back up in the 2nd for Doug Martin. Instead of giving up everything for T-Rich do we get a OLB and Martin?
Yeah, because they got a sweetheart deal from Mangini. That's not happening this time. And the fact that we despearately need some youth and depth, any big move like this is not the right thing to do.
Haha, no. The only guy considered once in a decade, was Reggie Bush. Believe it or not, but he is starting to figure it out in Miami. Will he ever be worth the #2 overall pick, nope. But that doesn't change the fact his college career was Barry Sanders-esque. Those QB's weren't even consensus top 5 players. Young and Leinart were average top QB prospects. Hell everybody was scared shitless Leinart's arm wasn't even strong enough to exist in the NFL. If memory serves, Young went 3 because Bud Adams forced him on Jeff Fisher, and Leinart slide to 11 for Cardinals. No once in a decade QB doesn't go #1. Super Mario was anything but a once in a decade prospect. He racked up more than half his sacks his senior year against piss poor competition, and he did it in 2 games. Mario was an athletic freak, but he wasn't highly productive/consistent against NFL level competition in college. This year is highly unusual in that regard, we have 3 guys with that label. One of them happens to be a guard and as a result will go in the teens. If he were a tackle? He'd be a lock in the top 3. For a frame of reference, the last time we had a guy given the once in a decade label was Adrian Peterson in 2007.
Obviously they hope they can catch lightning in a bottle twice, otherwise they wouldn't have contacted him.
We should make a move down to pick up more picks. Stop moving up and giving away picks. We need tooooo much help in almost every position.
With who? That's the whole point, everybody from 3 to 16 and maybe farther wants to move down. I would guess the Jets are hoping that the price for #3 or #4 gets cheaper when there is nobody else who wants it.
Yeah word is the vikes are asking for too much and the jets have pulled out of talks. This is all posturing by speilman (vikes gm) who's been trying to tell everyone how much activity he's had for over a month in dealing this pick. They will either lower their price when they're on the clock Scare TB into paying a ransom Or stay put and draft Kalil At least that's my opinion
