The phins have just released DE Philip Merling. I do not know much about him but does he have enough skills to be worth picking up and see if Rex can get anything out of him He was a bust for the Phins but with our needs at pass rush would he be worth getting?
Yeah, we need a pass rusher and that leaves him out...he was cut by Miami..that says all that needs to be said.
Well, definitely not another Maybin, Merling is 290lbs, a 3-4 DE build. That's never been his role, so who knows if he has the skills to be an inside rusher and penetrating run stopper.
Wow, I didn't realize that he had picked a QB in the second round 3 years in a row. Given the way these picks panned out, the selections are even more terrible. I guess we can only hope that Tony had little to no say in these picks... we need talent on offense- the last thing we can afford to do is waste picks on dogshit offensive players.
Couple of things: -Clemson might have a higher bust rate than the Gators now - Pat White was specifically drafted bc in 2008-09 the masses believed the wildcat was the wave of the future. I mean after all it won a division title! Of course like all gimmicks, it lasted a season and now is nothing more than a few plays here or there as a change up. - the Phins are easily the worst run franchise in the sport
Oh wow? 1. He did not work well in Miami - but that doesn't mean he lacks the skills. It's not like he flat-out Gholston-ed while in Dolphins uniform. 2. He was sidelined last year thanks to the Achilles tendon injury - if I have to guess, this was the deciding factor in releasing him more than anything. 3. He is a DE, not a OLB. Yes, he did intercept a pass and returned it for 6 (against Brett Favre, of all people.) but he is still a 6'4", 295-lb DE. (more like a 3-4 DE you'd be looking at.) 4. As a rush DE, he had more than enough skills to start. (I saw him play adequately more than enough times) And he was pretty decent against runs too. 5. His ankles - specifically, the Achilles tendon - concerns me a lot. On top of that, he beats upon pregnant female. I don't know if I want that kind of personality in my locker room. As for the production on the field, if he is healthy, I wouldn't mind him at vet min.
If we didn't have a solid young rotation at DE, I'd take a look at him as my last DE, but given his character problems and his mediocre of production on the field, I'd rather pass. I'm surprised they cut him though, he's good enough to earn an NFL paycheck somewhere, even if it's on vet minimum.
Jets do not have that. Wilkerson is the only stud in the young DE rotation. Mike DeVito is not how you spell a competent 3-4 DE. He is a rotational backup at best.
comedy gold! the jets shoould just pick up every bust from other teams and sooner or later strike gold, LOL. who's that raiders qb with the cannon arm drafted 1st overall that was cut a couple years ago? jets should get him also!
Wilk didnt impress me much last year. Stud i think is pushing it alittle to much. JPP now thats a stud.
