I know he's not liked well around these parts, but I read this today and was curious what the draftniks here thought about these picks. Basically Kiper did a 3 round mock, with the needs of each team factored in. For those curious, this is how the 1st round went leading up to Brockers' selection: 1 [IND] Luck 2 [WAS] RGIII 3 [MIN] Kalil 4 [CLE] Richardson 5 [TAM] Claiborne 6 [STL] Blackmon 7 [JAX] Ingram 8 [MIA] Tannehill 9 [CAR] Kuechly 10 [BUF] Floyd 11 [KCY] Poe 12 [SEA] Coples 13 [ARZ] Reiff 14 [DAL] Barron 15 [PHI] Cox
Thats "A" load of shit. I'd rather take DeCastro, Hightower, Kirkpatrick (FS) or Upshaw at 16 than Brockers.
I could see the Jets taking Brockers if he dropped to 16. I think the Cowboys are much more likely to take him on 14 though.
Where are they going to play all these guys? We have a defensive scheme where the lineman are run stoppers first and Rex has turned pouha and devito into very solid players. Not to mention Wilkerson and Ellis are going to get a full off season to be coached/developed by Rex. The Jets have so many immediate needs (WR, S, someone who can rush the passer) and needs within the next year or two: (OG, OT, MLB, OLB, etc..) I can't see how they would take Brockers.
AJ Jenkins in round 2????? WTF? And Im glad in this scenario we would be reaching on the 2nd most overrated player in the draft!!! I hate Mel Kiper.
I would not be surprised if Rex has finally caught on to what makes the Steelers and Ravens so effortlessly great on defense. Steelers - NT Casey Hampton, ROLB James Harrison, LOLB LaMarr Woodley, S Troy Polamalu. Ravens - RDE (plays a lot of NT) Haloti Ngata, ROLB Terrell Suggs, RILB Ray Lewis, S Ed Reed. That's a star player at every level on the defense, two in the LB's, and none of them comes off the field. Sione Pouha is a good rotational player who should not be on the field as a starter. He should be rotating in to give the guy (Kris Jenkins) who is a great 3 down player a breather when he needs it. He should be playing a lot of downs when the other team wants to impose their will by running against the Jets. And yeah I am going to get crucified for saying that but it is absolutely true. The NFL is a passing oriented league now, NT's that are run-stoppers only are a big handicap to the defense and they require strong pass rushers around them to make the difference.
the draft experts are a total joke. i understand these guys need to change their mock drafts like once a week, but c'mon i don't see us drafting any of those guys
I'm pretty sure Rex already knew what makes the Ravens defense great, he didn't really have to "catch on".
Pass Rush. Pass Rush. Pass Rush. The Jets need to bring in a young pass rusher. Quick, name the top 3 sack leaders from 2012.
Kiper is a Kunt. If the Draft board fell like that then we'd be absolutely fucking crazy not to take someone like DeCastro. My draft prediction: the Jets will not draft any player picked by Mel Kiper
I'd rather take the best K or P available before taking Brockers... How is DT a need? Kiper you've done it again.
Anybody involved with ESPN in even the most minor way has to be totally ignored if you are from the NY/NJ area.
Then why did Ozzie Newsome make the comment about Rex wanting cornerbacks over other defensive picks when Rex left? There's no question there was some tension between Rex and Ozzie on the talent that was made available to him while he was DC for the Ravens. Here's what we've seen out of Rex in the three years he has been the power behind the Jet's defense: 2009 - Entire defense tailored to make the CB's dominant. Heavy pressure on the CB from every angle blitzing puts Revis #1 on FBO's charts. Donald Strickland and Lito Sheppard both in the top 10 also. The Jets season ends when they can't cover all the WR's the Colts send at them in the AFC championship game. 2010 - Pass defense becomes coverage based. Pressure much lower on the QB and consequently much higher on the CB. Revis stays #1 but now there are people who compare to him in the charting, he's not off on his own plateau. The Jets bring in another quality CB in Cromartie and he ranks #9 on the FBO charts. The Jets overall pass defense declines significantly as the talent in the defensive backfield is upgraded. 2011 - Pass defense remains coverage based but Rex throws in the Confuse-A-Cat variant in which some receivers are covered only briefly at the snap and then their coverage goes elsewhere to help out. Revis drops to #16 on the FBO charts. (Read that again.) Cromartie is no longer in the top 10 either. The Jets are among the worst defenses in the NFL against opposing TE's and slot receivers. The overall qualitative difference between the Jets mad-blitzing 2009 defense and their corner heavy coverage defenses in 2010 and 2011 is clear. What's changed since then? The Jets have spent a lot of picks (#1 and #2) on CB's. Their personnel in the defensive backfield has become more expensive and more valuable at the same point that their ability to dominate against the pass has declined. Was Darrelle Revis amazing season in 2009 a fluke? Nope. He just got a LOT of help from the rest of the defense in making his superior skillset dominant. All those blitzers gave Revis a tremendous advantage against the one guy he was assigned to cover. It's not like having the extra blitzers meant Revis had to cover two guys. He had the same job, he just had it with a QB running for his life and making lots of bad decisions on the other side of the field. Not going to segue into "why CB's are over-rated" but that thought has to be on Rex's mind at this point. He's going to have to decide if Revis is worth a 9th of his cap and he's going to have to do it fairly soon.
Brockers isn't a terrible pick. He's unpolished with a ton of potential. Not my favorite pick at #16 but when you think about Wilkerson and Brockers as the DEs in and our 3-4 with Pouha and Ellis rotating in at NT we would have one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. Brockers has star potential and could help our pass rush as well without having to dial up exotic blitzes. Personally I really like Kheeston Randall from Texas a a 3-4 DE (6'5, 300 lbs, explosive player) in the 3rd and we could then take an OLB in the 1st. Perry/Upshaw/Mercilus and Randall >> Massaquoi and Brockers
every time i listen to kiper and mcshay they always go on about a player "if hes still on the board at that point" even if talking about players where its 99% likely they will still be available - the way they talk its like there are 50 teams picking before a team picking at 15.
I don't know much about Brockers, but if you have a chance to get a 3-4 DL who disrupts and collapses the pocket, then you get him. Being able to pressure a QB with the Front-3 is invaluable. (Just look at Wilfork himself did against the Ravens.) If the D-line has that capability, then the rest of the D behind the line will fall into place.
I'm pretty sure that Rex went away from the blitzing because he thought Peyton Manning and the Colts had provided a blueprint (3 and 4 WR's + TE) that the NFL could use to defeat it. The problem with using the heavy blitzing against the spread is that 5 guys need to be covered and 1 of them is going deep on almost every play. That puts a premium on keeping your DB's back in coverage and keeping at least 1 safety deep. When the Jets were doing the mad-blitzing they had a DB coming on almost every play. They had 2 coming when they really dialed up the pressure. They had both corners jamming their guy at the line of scrimmage.
i gotta ask, what do you guys think about harrison smith? he seems like he can help us cover the tight end as it looks like his coverage skills are better than mark barrons. i'd be cool with taking him in the 2nd round as long as we got a good OLB in the 1st
