See if Chicago is interested in trading him ? If so, what's the most we should offer in terms of picks ?
They already went after and added a running back this offseason. In addition to the RBs we already have on the roster, this is no longer a need.
If they had just stuck with the run last year, greene would have been fine and we would have made the playoffs.
We don't have the cap space and nothing to offer them trade-wise but picks. And we need all our picks badly.
Can't speak to cap space as I'm not up to speed on the jet's situation, but as far as draft picks, you go into the draft PRAYING that you end up with someone like Forte. Hard to see why you wouldn't won't to use draft picks to get him. It's a question of what price (in picks) he's worth.
Rex said Tebow would be in up to 20 snaps per game. Offense generally avg's something like 60+ snaps ? So Greene is going to be the "ground and pound" back carrying a huge majority of the load?
He'd command at least a 1st and another high round pick. We need to use that 1st on a passrusher. We need all our picks this draft. I'm also not a fan of handing out big contracts to RBs as they have the lowest shelf life of any position in the league. Forte wants to get paid. So it'd be a 1st, 3rd and a massive amount of cap space. No thank you. You could also say he has durability concerns as well.
I would rather spend what it takes to move up and get Trent or just draft one of the 2-4 ranked RB’s in the 2nd round. I like Forte, but wouldnt spend more than a 2nd... plus we dont have the cap room.
He's franchised, no shot. Also, as a general rule-of-thumb, I hope the Jets very seldomly give a RB his second contract.
I still wouldn't. This team has been trading away too many draft picks, and the cap situation is only going to get more fucked up when we have to resign Revis. I'm the kind of guy that believes a good OL can make any serviceable RB effective and I think those picks/money could go towards an OT or OG who could make the platoon of Greene/McKnight and Tebow packages work really well. Others believe we need the dynamic, home run-hitter in the backfield. I would obviously love to have that guy, but I don't think it's a necessity and the picks are too valuable imo. And I also believe in the rule mentioned by Going4theGreen and giving RBs their 2nd contract. RBs just don't last very long. (Curtis Martin is a notable exception)
I agree about a good line. McGahee had a serviceable line last year and ended up looking like an All Pro RB . As for Forte, just can't help but think that he would make the offense so much better and take additional pressure off of Sanchez. I mean, teams would seriously have to respect the run and it would open up the passing game, which, coincidentally, Forte is great there as well. That said, I see where you are coming from as well, and can't really argue with what you said.
Tanny's goal should be to draft our own Forte in the 2nd round and pay him $50 a year for the first 4 years. Then cut him.
We can package a deal where Scott, Pace, Hunter and Eric Smith along with our 1st and 2nd round pick, plus next years 1st go to Chicago and we get Forte. I believe Forte is willing to play for vets minimum. In fact, if negotiated properly, he may even pay the Jets to play. This is a no brainer....kinda like the OP.
