Honestly who cares who he loves? It's a free country and he can be a fan of Castro if he wants. You or I may not be a fan of Castro but he shouldn't have to apologize because of who he likes. The Marlins knew who they were hiring and the kicker is he apparently said to a reporter when he was in Chicago the he loved Castro and admired him but it didn't register a blip on the radar screen. Edit: He did make similar comments in 2008 so why was there no outrage then? Like I said the Marlins knew who theywere hiring, this is on them and the community should be outraged with them knowing he said similar things in the past. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/1180...stro-reference-played-in-chicago-in-2008.html
Apparently what he said to the Chicago reporter was "I don't admire his philosophy. I admire him." which is consistent with his explanation today. The moral of the story for Ozzie is fuckin think [for once] before you speak.
As liberal as Murrell is, Im surprised he thinks GUillen should be suspended. Im serious. I dont understand the suspension. What did GUillen do wrong?
i really don't understand how some of you guys don't get it. he's not being sent to jail. no one is accusing him of a crime. get that "free speech" shit out of here. free speech doesn't mean you can go around saying whatever the fuck you like with no consequences. he was suspended by his boss. he did some stupid shit to alienate the fanbase. that's what he did wrong. how are people missing this? if girardi came out tomorrow and said he appreciated bin laden's ability to stay hidden for over 10 years after 9/11.. you don't think there would be repercussions? gtfo. also.. if you're not cuban, your opinion on the severity of his comment carries zero weight. you really don't get why this is a bigger deal in miami than in chicago?
What's hilarious (and tragically sad) is how bass-ackwards Ozzie got it -- everybody in the media will love you if express fondness for Castro's Marxist ideals and "some of the things he's done for the people," but you're supposed to feel disapproval of the fact that he's been a murderous tyrant in power for 50 years, suppressing all dissdents. Ozzie comes out with a typical Ozzie curveball, saying he doesn't agree with his views but "admires" that he can crush all opposition for 50 years. hmy:
What if you told a client you like burgers, but your boss is a vegan tree hugger who doesn't want anyone to eat anything but kale. Your boss then says you're suspended for a week. Does that seem normal to you?
If a big client base we had was vegans, and you were singing the praises of burgers publicly, then it could be a problem from a business standpoint. The private sector has a right to protect their business's image and earning potential and discipline employees as they see fit.
No I totally get it, let's think about this for a minute and I'm not defending Castro in anyway but I was educated in the United States by parents who lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis. Ozzie on the other hand was not, he was raised in Venezuela and educated in a Venezuelan system that possibly was sympathetic to Castro and Cuba, afterall they are currently run by a dictator and not exactly pro America. Secondly you don't know what my ethnicity or who is in my family so for you to assume that I'm not Cuban or don't know what it means to be Cuban in the United States is a silly assumption. I take issue with your comment about my opiniojn on the matter bearing no signifigance, this is a message board. Why bother posting here if you don't want opinions? Third your comparison of Bin Laden to Castro is borderline insanity, Castro didn't orchestrate an attack on the United States that killed 3000 civilians did he? Is Castro a bad person? Yes but to compare him to Bin Laden is a little extreme. He's probably more in line with Kim Jung Il the Bin Laden. Bad person, yes but wanted dead or alive? No Finally my real issue is with the way the Marlins handled this, they hired this guy, they knew he had a big mouth and a problem with keeping his opinions to himself. They knew he had baggage, oh and there was also the 2008 article with him essentially saying the same things about Castro. For the Marlins to hire this guy and then distance themself from the situation and isolate Ozzie the way they have shows what a low class organization they are. Ozzie stood up and admitted he made a mistake and he understands why he was getting killed for it. I think his comments were taken out of context which is entirely possible for a guy who wasn't educated in the United States and doesn't speak English as his first langauge. Throw in the cultural nuances between Latino culture and American culture and love can mean a few different things.
Actually, it's not a free country..try being involved in any public role at all and say you love Hitler if you need any proof.
everything i said before i quoted you was not directed at you. this is not about why ozzie might've said the things that he said. it's that he said the wrong thing and now he is being punished for it. if i was born to racist parents and i walked around spitting racial slurs at people, it's easy to figure out why i'm racist. it doesn't make it right. i didn't assume anything about you or your ethnicity. someone in the thread called castro a random political figure. that's a spectacularly stupid statement. that's what i was talking about. what i'm saying is that it is impossible for a non-cuban to fully grasp the severity of guillen's comments about castro because only they know what living under castro is really like. i'm not sure what you think the marlins should have done. yeah, they hired the guy knowing he has a big mouth. does that mean they should be ok with anything he says? of course they're going to punish him. he angered a HUGE portion of their fanbase. this is like saying the jets should be fine if santonio holmes smokes weed again because they knew he smoked weed before they got him. ozzie guillen speaks english perfectly fine. that is the worst excuse for this i have ever heard. ozzie elaborated pretty well what he "loved" about castro. living in a free country and not having to apologize are two very different and separate things.
This. America has a list of "oh no no"'s that can prevent people from "participating in American society". Praising Castro is one of those Oh No No's.
