I think the scariest thing to me about Coples, aside from how stiff he looks on tape, are his interviews. He seems very unintelligent. He may be severely learning disabled. I don't know. He has trouble maintaining eye contact and he sounds dazed. My issue is the Jets HAVE a pass rusher in Maybin. While they absolutely still need pass rush help, they really need a linebacker who can do it all. I don't see Coples as that sort of guy. I don't see the wisdom in giving millions of dollars to a guy with motivation problems and thinking that all of a sudden, the lights going to go on. Motivation problems aside, he may not be all that bright. That's not a necessity for a pass rusher, but Rex asks a lot more of his linebackers. The more I watch of this class of OLB's, the more and more I think the Jets should either trade down or nab an offensive lineman. Or both. -X-
Rex had to sat that with gholston. He was a highly drafted, big contract that he was about to inherit. Taking a guy like coples would be more proving of arrogance than the gholston comments to me.
Coples is much similar to Ingram & Upshaw wherein he has alot of raw skills..but doesn't fit perfectly in any one position. What that means is you have to find a very specific role for him that is gonna fit his skills. I don't know if "motivational issues" is the proper label without knowing the inside investigative details. He did change positions and had a different head coach heading into his senior year, also can't discount college teams putting greater emphasis on blocking him than they likely did when he was a junior. It is obvious that he doesn't have a strong personality & isn't the warrior you'd like him to be. What he is however, is an athlete. An athlete for the front 7 is something the Jets desperately need. Someone who can make an explosive play by getting off a block or a quick first step. I'll trust Rex with his evaluation. I don't doubt he'd put Coples in a positive position to succeed schematically, but I wonder what Rex will think of his motor. I think that would be the determining factor.
Yea I love everything about what he could do I just don't trust him to want to do it. If Rex thinks he could motivate him I would love him. To me I see him playing well for his rookie contract then getting his big contract and declining greatly.
I can't help thinking of Albert Haynesworth and how the cash went to his head and he just didn't give a shit with all that cash in the bank! Unfortunately its very hard to motivate a lazy person and if he's lazy at this stage in his career - just before his greatest chance to hit the big time - what is he going to be like after he has got his cash?
Agreed for the most part (specifically about the OL). That said, I believe the LB that they draft needs to be a top notch passrusher, simply so they can have that threat on the field at all times. I like Maybin and the role he serves, but I think a player that can go downs 1-3 and create the same pressure whenever needed would add a tremendous level to the defense. 3rd downs would be hell with both the new guy and Maybin out there, though again, I'd rather Maybin still go from a 2 pt stance at a wide angle, with the guy we pick putting his hand down. Where I'd disagree is that Coples isn't necessarily the level of athlete I think we should be looking for. That said, I absolutely agree about the confusion over positions with some of those guys. Upshaw CAN be a good 34 OLB, but I think that he'd be better off with his hand down in a defense that can utilize different looks. As for Ingram, I have no idea... to be honest I could see him working anywhere from 43 end to MLB. Haha, that showed absolutely nothing. OH CRAP HE CAN JUMP!!! By the way 13 defensive ends had better vertical leaps at the combine.
Tend to agree. Coples is talented but he scares me for a number of reasons for the Jets. Upshaw and Ingram are both nice players but they both scare me for certain reasons. I would love to see a trade down. OLB, OT, S and WR need to be addressed pretty early.
Albert Haynesworth is exactly who he reminds me of too. I think he will be good early on because he does want that big pay day and now that rookie contracts are smaller he will have to play it out. Once he does I can see his laziness taking over and not staying in NFL shape and falling apart. I would love this guy to prove me wrong as a Jet but he has such an attitude that it seems like an easy prediction.
I wouldnt touch him . More and more I think we should avoid the tier 1 DE/OLB class, go for barron or the top OL in the 1st round, the best available pass rusher in the 2nd and a WR in the 3rd.
Not being trying to be a dick but Barron isn't someone this team is looking to draft. People need to get this bs out of their minds. I don't hate the kid, but we have a strong safety already in Laron Landry. Barron isn't going to be playing FS in the NFL so he is no longer a target for this team.
Laron Landry is not going to be anything more than a 1 yr fix - if he proves himself healthy he will want a big payday and we probably wont be in a position to give it to him - and the chances of him proving himself to be healthy seem slim. If Barron is there when the Jets pick then there is a good chance that he will be their choice (not as likely as Upshaw but its still a very real possibility IMHO)
But what you have to realize is we are still a win now team, and win now teams dont draft eventual replacements in the 1st round, especially one who doesn't deserve to be chosen at 16 by any means. I dont think there is a "good" chance he gets chosen by us at all. We don't give 4 million dollars to a player unless we're confident that he is healthy. Drafting Barron at 16 would be frankly idiotic.
If we (or anyone else) was convinced that Landry was healthy and could remain that way he would have been the #1 safety prospect out there and he would have signed a multi-year contract - he even came out and admitted it was a 1 yr deal as he has to prove he can stay healthy. I dont agree that we are win now team (especially after last season) - we dont have an elite QB that is in his peak and we dont know what we have with Sanchez - if he turns out to be great then we are set for the next 5-10 years - if he doesnt then we are starting over with a new QB in the next year or so - neither scenario paints us as a "win now" team. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and (IMHO) Barron would not be the worst call we could make at #16 (though my preference would be to trade down unless someone unexpectedly falls).
While I completely disagree with your post, Ill try and comply while still breaking it down for you. Lets say the Jets arent a win now team. Lets say Laron is virtually a guarantee to not be healthy. Lets say our team stays at 16. Why of all positions would we pick a safety? Especially Mark Barron who is the best safety in a class that isnt filled with that great of talent. I would slightly understand if you said a position that had an impact on this team like QB, or Rush LB, or even a RT but a safety? I get we have a NEED there but that doesnt mean that its close to being a bigger priority over OLB, RT, or WR. I think you need to re-evaluate Mark Barron and his capabilities instead of listening to what you hear or read from places like ESPN or the NFL Network. Mark Barron isnt a dynamic player. When guys like Floyd, Upshaw, Hightower, Perry, Glenn, Adams, Jeffery, or even DeCastro have a chance at being available at 16 or even in a trade down scenario to 22, you dont skip them to draft a Safety who either A) wont be starting this year or B) isnt a better player than the players I mentioned.
and yet JTJ the Jets have to throw 2 safeties on the field this year. Barron is an option, because he is the best of a bad bunch. If you don't get Barron, you get an even weaker option at safety. That thought may scare the Jets into taking Barron. I agree with you it is a stupid fucking decision, he isn't better than anybody you listed, and several others. If I put together a big board, Barron my be something like 35 on my board. But we can't pretend it isn't a potential option that the Jets have in mind. I would hate it, but we can't simply dismiss it as a possibility, because there is that chance. Frankly I am hoping Dallas just takes him at 14, and prevents us from having to make that choice...
Frankly I'd rather re-sign Jimmy as insurance for SS (yes I know hes a health risk) or bring in some other stop gap safety than reach for Barron. No need wasting a 1st round pick on him. Next years safety class is where we should really be looking to target a dynamic player at that FS or SS spot (if none of our players workout).
If Coples is there, you hope a team is desperate enough to trade a lot to go get him. (Example: The Titans) Which is completely possibly.
