I'm sorry, but for a safety to be a top 10 prospect, he better be damned close to what Eric Berry was coming out of Tennessee two years ago. Mark Barron is absolutely not the prospect Berry was.

Dont agree with Barron, Poe and Cox.

Pretty much what nyjetsrules said about Barron.

Poe is probably tied with Brockers for being the most overrated player in this draft. The guy had 33 total tackles and a sack in the CUSA conference. Peopler scream about his 40 time and athleticism, but he did poorly in the 3 cone drill- well below the average (and 3 cone drill is the most telling out of any drill at the combine for DTs). Dallas is extremely high on Poe and Barron supposedly and are said to be planning on taking Poe if available, and Barron if Poe isnt... I hope they do because its one more player off the board that I dont want the Jets to draft and one more player dropping that much better.

He showed really well at his Pro Day, and was only 80-90% healed.

Although the same people say Upshaw had a good Pro Day too, yet they are going in different directions...

It may disappoint a lot of Jet fans, it's a possibility Barron could be our pick at 16.

I feel better about his progress and his pro-day.

I've softened up on Barron a bit, he has a little more range that I give him credit for. I still don't see 5x All-Pro, still a 8-10 starting SS. And that's solid value most times with a 1st round pick, not everyone you get in the 1st will be future top 5 positional players. I would be more comfortable picking him around 20, but there's a great chance he doesn't make it there or even to 16.

You can't make PBUs like this without having a higher level of athleticism:

Dallas could take Barron, but they seem to have been keying on a few D-lineman lately.

I'm curious to see if we bring him in for a visit.

I've never seen seen so many different opinions on 4 defensive plays (CU, DK, DH, & MB) from the same team. IMO, Hightower is the stepchild of the group and may turn into the best NFL player.

I have no data, but I believe it may be the first time 4 defensive players from the same team gets drafted in Rd 1. The Cane's , early/mid 2000s could have been a possibility.

EDIT....I was right, 2004......Sean Taylor, Jon Vilma, Vince Wilfork & DJ Williams.....an excellent group.

Crazy to think of the talent that came from that Miami defense. 3 pro bowlers...and to think that Ed Reed was there only a couple years before them.

I've seen Dallas is fascinated with Poe, but they don't want everyone to know it. I wonder if that means they'll finally move Ratliff outside, or they think he'll be hitting a decline soon.

And you're right, there are so many opinions on those 4. People were so crucial with Upshaw's 40 time, he runs a 4.76 at a pound under 280 and he still can't please them. Then you have the people that exclude his underwear football stats and just go off his tape. Hightower doesn't play as hard as Upshaw, others say he was the best player on the defense. Kirkpatrick looks stiff out of his breaks, Kirkpatrick has quick hips.

I laugh at the "product of a scheme/surrounding talent" remark, as if this is the 1st time there has been an elite defense with several stars on it. The Miami team you referenced shows this, as many of them were major players that went on to do well. The "Saban hasn't produced a star player, so avoid his players" is relative to the talent he gets and shouldn't be held responsible for players not living up to their billing in the NFL. His job is to get them there, it's up to the player to succeed in the NFL.

Scary thing is, that 2011 D may not be done with 1st Rounders, as there could be 4 more starters going in the 1st next year(Jesse Williams, Nico Johnson, Robbie Lester, and Dee Milliner). I would say CJ Mosley too, but he still can't get a full starting job, as he'll retain his subpackage role as Johnson moves to MIKE and sophomore Trey DePriest takes over WILL. It's nothing he has done wrong, he'll get tons of time as Bama rarely plays base 34, but it might be held against him by the draft boards. Fine with me, it might get him to stay his Senior year. One of the best cover ILBs I've seen in a while...

If we drafted Barron, how many black safeties would be on the roster?

I'm not sure I want Barron at 16 or that he is a top 12 player currently. While he seems athletic and a good safety, to be top 12 you really need to wow people. And if we pick Barron doesn't that likely mean we are passing up at least one OLB?

The argument for Barron on the 16 is very narrow and basically comes down to moving him to FS or planning to install him as the SS for 5 years and try to build the defense from the middle out as it should be.

Given that the Jets already signed LaRon Landry to play SS that cuts the options with Barron down some. Yeah, Landry is on a 1 year deal but all the upside in that deal goes out the window if the Jets draft Barron with plans to install him at SS, where he likely belongs.

If Landry has a great year, staying injury-free for the first time in awhile and Barron has a typical who-what-where period as he enters the NFL where do the Jets wind up? If moving Barron to FS increases the chance he flounders his first season where do the Jets wind up?

Getting Barron on the 16 would be another head-scratcher for the Jets this off-season unless Rex Ryan is sure he can play FS.

A lot of questions about Barron, but athletically he's far and away better than any safety we had on the roster last season.

Barron gets a ton of heat here, but he really is a pretty good player. It's just the value concerns that come into play.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to trade down and get Barron in the mid-20's. Or I should say I would have loved doing that before the Jets signed LaRon Landry. Now I see it as a value move but one that will create yet more collisions in the long-term talent stream.
