Yeah, exactly what we needed. The Stanton signing was actually a good move but now completely nullified by the circus coming to town. The Landry move was high risk/high reward and not at a position where the high reward substantially improves the defense if it pays off. Eric Smith's problem is not in run support. The moves the Jets have made at this point look like pure panic and it's not the good kind of panic that motivates you to do better.
I could understand everything pre-Tebow if the Jets felt hamstrung by the cap and decided they would build through low profile FAs and the draft, but now giving up 2 draft picks for a gimmick QB???? I am disgusted and confused and angry.
Yeah, this is the one move this off season I don't agree with thus far. Sure he'll make our team better and give us more options, we may even see him in some TE packages. But another backup QB was the least of our needs, and sacrificing 2 picks when we need picks more than anything wasn't well thought out at all. We'll see how it all plays out, I just hope to god we address RT, otherwise Tebow WILL be starting after Sanchez goes down with an injury. Hopefully it'll work out, but we've still got work to do.
I think the front office has done a good job this offseason. 1. We needed safty help so we got the top safty avail and signed him to a safe contract to address his injury concerns. We also went after another top safty who chose not to sign with us and ended up slightly overpaid 2. Another WR holmes, kerley ,keller and shillings (prob killed spelling of his name) will have to be good enough. Shill was added so teams cant stack the box as much but remember we are not going to invest another 50 million in a wr for a ground and pound team. Id guess well draft another speed guy in round 2 3.RT i wish we could have addressed this but one there wasnt really anyone out there to address it with and honestly i think a new offensive coor and an improved ducasse will help with this. We will run more suiting ducasse strong suit and playaction pass more which will itself slow down pass rushers. Also running more tires out defense as game goes on. Only mistake here was keeping hunter but i think that was more because they didnt want to make it seem like we were pandering to holmes after there little spats. 4.I think its almost given we will go after a passrusher in round one of the draft. People complain we have bad caracter guys on the team then complain when we bring in good ones. You really think releasing the bad ones like holmes would make team better. We had limited cap and got the best safty avail,a speedy wr,a high caracter backup qb who will push sanchez which alot of people wanted(pushing sanchez) and resigned a few of our own (pouha and thomas). Overall i think the plan this offseason seems well laid out - Bring in competitors and add depth. After compensation picks id bet well have 9 or 10 picks in draft and will do what we need to in order to better our team. I believe we have a good gm and a great coach no go eat a fucking snack and stop bitching
we only went to ruin in 2005 and 2007 cause chad got hurt improving our record by 1 or 2 games with limited cap room a tougher schedule would be a bad thing? werent the last two superbowl champions 9 and 10 win teams? step back from the cliff, man
We went to ruin in 2005 because the offensive line got old and hurt and Curtis Martin finally went over the hill and Chad got hurt early. The Jets hadn't been setup at that point to succeed, with the trade-ups of the previous years really starting to hurt them and some players naturally aging out, which always happens in the absence of smart planning. We went to ruin in 2007 because the Jets, for whatever reason, chose to have a very public fight with the player rep in the locker room who also happened to be their left guard. An entire season went down the tubes because they never found a left guard after that. I'd love to step back from the cliff, but as is usual when the Jets begin to go to ruin I am stuck between a rock and the cliff.
The #1 priority this offseason was replacing Schottenheimer and they succeeded in that. The starting unit last year compared to this year we're down a WR and a FS - both of which can be addressed via the draft. We've upgraded at SS and backup QB. Also, this is a very young team so the development potential is still very high, particularly on offense. Things are not nearly as dire as they seem.
The starting unit on offense wasn't good enough last year. That's the point. The starting unit on defense has several key aging players who were hurt/less effective last year. That's the point. Keeping Wayne Hunter on offense is creating the same hole we had last season. Keeping Bart Scott at LILB is maintaining the same set of parameters that forced the Jets to switch packages as often as they did last season. Keeping Bryan Thomas at ROLB still leaves the Jets without a dominant pass rusher from the single most important slot for that role. Now throw in the fact that Hunter, Scott, Pace and Thomas are all over 30 and in decline and that Thomas had an achilles last year and the picture is grimmer still. I have a rep as a darksider, but I'm also one of the most optimistic posters on TGG when I see things setup to go well.
The Jets front office built the personnel of the offense to play a ground and pound running game supported by a play action passing game. Brian Schottenheimer ran the offense as though it were the 2000 Rams. Wayne Hunter is a run blocker primarily (which he does very well) and is a project as a pass blocker... same goes for Ducasse. If the offense had put more emphasis on what it does well it would've performed much better than it did. To think that the Jets offense suddenly sucks because of what happened last year is short sighted - the first two years they did what they did best and it worked. Schottenheimer was hell bent on running the offense the way he wanted and it cost the team. Now we've got an offensive coordinator that we know will run the offense the way Rex envisions it. This alone represents a MAJOR upgrade. As for the linebackers - I agree that if the currently group had to walk out on to the field today I'd be holding my breath... however this story is not yet written because the offseason is not yet over. There is still plenty of time to address these needs. I want to see upgrades here just as much as you do.
potential is still very high lol. Potential of who? So yes you are right since Eli won a Super Bowl in his 4th year, Sanchez's potential is high.
i just read in another thread, and in no way am i saying this is actually true or something that was even said by tannenbaum but it was said that tanny said we are done in free agency on the call about tebow. that my friends is scary, remember way back when in february and the giants and patsies were going to be playin in the superbowl and someone out there hoped that the jets dont completely over react in the offseason simply because their 2 hated rivals were playing in the superbowl..... guess what. now that we all come down off of the tebowmania we have got to sit back and realize that the jets did exactly what many had hoped they wouldnt... make a HUGE splash and not actually fill the holes that we have that are blatantly obvious. at first i thought oh jesus this is to sell tickets and psls... now thinking about it i still feel it is about that but more so about just simply being talked about... a direct reaction to the fact that other teams did better that are in the jets direct area and are rivals...
IMO we could not afford a top tier FA tackle (and it was an incredibly thin market), there were no good safeties available in FA (and actually we got the highest ranked safety that was available), we got a potential #2 WR and will likely get Braylon as well, there were no decent OLBs we could afford plus we are almost certain to spend our 1st rd pick on one, blocking TEs are not hard to get, we got a back-up QB. Given that we are not going in for any high profile FAs it makes sense to see how the draft shakes out before looking to fill the gaps.
Jake Steinberg @Steiny31 Reply Retweet Favorite · Open Former #Jets Matt Mulligan and Rob Turner visited the Rams to workout for their old offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. hahahahahah that is sooo funny... good look with that Schotty... He also tried to take Tebow from us too...
I agree with Bradwaysux, it is hard to be optimistic with the Jets currently. They got a good football player in Tebow, but is it what they really needed? Could they have gotten some safety, oline, or wr depth for a 4th? We came into the offseason with holes at WR, S,OLB, RT, backup QB as main priorities. We signed Schillens, but Tanny said he could be a ST to catching a 100 passes. I don't know much on him, but if he develops it will be good. We slightly addressed the WR position then. We only have one starting safety currently, and not a coverage safety, another hitter/tackler. We haven't acquired an olb. We haven't bolstered our oline, any part of it, let alone RT. We signed Stanton for backup QB, traded him, and then got another backup QB in Tebow. I feel like the Jets didn't maximize free agency if they are truely done. While yes the Jets can address holes through the draft, what are chances of getting a starting quality player in the draft? How many do you get per draft? I think you get an average of 1, maybe 2, and they are still rookies who are going to have problems. The Jets entered FA with a lot of holes, and they seemed to only fill backup QB in the biggest, splashiest way possible and have slightly addressed other areas. This team was only 8-8 last year, but for everyone arguing they were a few bounces away from the playoffs, they were also a blocked punt, dropped Stevie Johnson pass away from 6-10. It works both ways. It looks like the Jets front office is buckling down and putting a lot of faith in Sanchez improving, Hunter/Ducasse improving, Moore/Slauson getting healthy, Scott not dropping off, Landry staying healthy, Schillens turning into a #2 WR. The lack of addressing Oline depth is really the worst part in my view. We didn't do anything last year when Turner went down, and we still haven't.
I was a bit uneasy going into the last off-season because the lockout was going to prevent the Jets from solidifying the gains they had made on offense in 2010. The idea of losing Edwards or Holmes wasn't very appealing either and it seemed likely we were going to lose one of them. The thing that really flipped me on the current management team was the combination of the Asomugha thing stealing a week of the very short free agent process from us and the Jets saying they were going to a heavy passing attack that season. Neither of those very fundamental decisions by the Jets made any sense at all. It was like there were no adults sitting in the room when these decisions were made. After that everything else began to slant against the Jets in my view. I wasn't willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on Hunter when he turned into a problem and the lack of line depth when Mangold went down. It's true that opinion is often an evolving thing with shades of grey becoming darker or lighter depending on the latest twists and turns that events have taken. However when there's a body of evidence that has accumulated that suggests the guys standing around in makeup are clowns that's really hard to ignore also. At the moment the odds are very good that the Jets management team is a clown show, a fact covered up by the arrival of a player's coach who happened to be an excellent defensive coach and by the constant expense of future assets to prop the team in the short term.
^-We could use a real back up center. Has that even been addressed yet? I have to admit I don't pay attention before the draft but this Tebow mess sucked me in early.
We didn't sacrifice two picks. Do you really think there is going to be a better athlete than Tebow, available in the fourth round? I don't think so. As for the sixth round pick, the Jets got back a pick in the seventh round. So where did we surrender or sacrifice pics?
I don't think it has. For some reason when Turner went down in the preseason, we didn't address it. And I still don't think we have. I understand we can't a high profile guy, but there had to be a backup that we could have gotten cheap or and o lineman we could have traded a 4th and 6th for.
