http://turnonthejets.com/2012/03/mike-tannenbaums-career-as-new-york-jets-gm-part-1-the-mangini-years/ & http://turnonthejets.com/2012/03/mike-tannenbaums-career-as-new-york-jets-gm-part-2-the-ryan-years/ A little excerpt from one these articles: "New York Jets General Manger Mike Tannenbaum deserves a large share of the credit for the New York Jets being a playoff team in 2006, 2009 and 2010. He also deserves a large share of the credit for the Jets missing the playoffs in 2007, 2008, and 2011. Since taking over as GM, the Jets have been a .500 or better team in 5 of 6 seasons but have only made the playoffs half of the time. Basically, you are getting a 8-8 to 10-6 team who could sneak into the playoffs depending on how strong the rest of the conference is. Mike Tannenbaum is going to field a competitive team but he hasn’t shown the ability to put together a roster good enough to be one of the NFL’s elite. Zero division titles. Zero 12 win seasons yet three playoff berths and four playoff wins." Basically he's mediocre much like the Jets as we have all known them most of our lives... Draft Classes (Mangini Years) 2006 D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, Eric Smith, Kellen Clemens, Anthony Schlegel, Brad Smith, Leon Washington, Drew Coleman, Titus Adams, Jason Pociask 2007 Darrelle Revis, David Harris, Chansi Stuckey, Jacob Bender 2008 Vernon Gholston, Dustin Keller, Dwight Lowery, Erik Ainge, Marcus Henry, Nate Garner Draft Classes (Ryan Years) 2009 Mark Sanchez, Shonn Greene, Matt Slauson 2010 Kyle Wilson, Vladimir Ducasse, Joe McKnight, John Conner 2011 Muhammad Wilkerson, Kenrick Ellis, Bilal Powell, Jeremy Kerley, Greg McElroy, Scotty McKnight From my point of view, and it's exactly that - this is mediocrity at it's best. Like the offense last year our drafts have no identity, mostly because we change coarse in what's trying to be done so often. There is no rhyme or reason. He trade's away draft picks trying to "win now" because someone within the organization thinks there are close - With no true personnel guy (our personnel guy/scouting guru is the GM who was fired that Mr T replaced - LOL) we are basically just throwing crap at a wall in our drafts after the first 2 rounds hoping something sticks while elite teams like the Steeler's, Ravens(not "elite" but always draft well), Titans for a period, Colts for a period and even the Patriots and Giants all sticking to the tried and true formula of taking the best football player on the board at that time for there system and for the most part without reaching within the confines of their system. It seems like its getting worse rather than more defined and precise... JMO...
To be honest I just think Tanny's only strength is crunching the salary cap numbers. I don't think he's good budgeting a strong 53-man roster nor do I think he projects ahead enough into the future (I'm talking about within the next year ahead).
Week 2 of Free Agency people. Week 2. Couldn't pull our man in Nelson away from his current team. It's a shame, it's part of the business. I feel like this is Lord Of The Flies and I'm the one with the glasses trying to keep Tanny's head off a spit. Can you give me 12 months?
After the season we just had and it was a beyond ugly end,,,,,after watching the Xmas eve debacle and then having to witness Giants vs Patriots in the Super Bowl ,,,after getting our crow handed to us,,and basically shoved down our throats and people saying eat it and enjoy,,,,,,,this is the plan,,,,,this is the best they could do to do,,,this is going to solve our problems,,,,,,,,,3 glaring needs,,,,,Rt,,,,,,OLB,,,,,,and S,,,,,none have been addressed. I really believe the front office believes this team is loaded with talent and under performed last year,,,,,,,,why else would our biggest signing thus far be a kicker,Thomas,,and Shilens,,,,,,untreal
Just what I said. He went where he wanted to play, like almost everyone does..I agree there are exceptions but not many although I am sure Mario Williams is one of them. If the money is similar they go where they want to play..it's that simple.
hand me your conch shell! People say we had 3 glaring needs: RT, OLB and S and I agree. "They" also say we should have addressed these needs in FA. I would ask "them" what difference makers were there available in free agency that were ever realistic prospects for the Jets? Safety - every good safety was either franchised tagged or re-signed with their existing team (which is what you would expect them to do unless someone paid over the odds or they had issues). OL - there were virtualy no decent tackles available in free agency and most of those that were re-signed with their existing teams. Winston is the only slightl disappointment here. OLB - again, very little of quality available, the only slight disappointment here with Jarrett Johnson. Its not like there is a huge range of quality free agents available (outside of the WR position) and so I dont know what people realistically expected the Jets to do to date.
Agreed, but that should have played into draft theory the past several years. Did we need to draft Bilal f'ing Powell instead of a safety? If the safety crop was so weak, why did we trade Dwight Lowery? Why was Wayne Hunter's 2.5M option picked up. Why is Vlad Ducasse even on this team?
You were doing well till you got to Vlad.... The word you were looking for there, is PROJECT, not bust. (and I wouldn't read too much into the wonderlic score, because the kid is from Port au Prince, I don't put too much stock into the whole cultural bias thing, but in this case...) Now, maybe you just got on the Green Wagon, but if you've been here for any legnth of time, look how long it took for Brandon Moore to be the player he is. HE sucked for years. Then became a very good player.
I understand what you're saying but how awful was Wayne Hunter? If Ducasse couldn't beat him out, BUST is the only word I will call him. I'm tired of making excuses for our picks (Gholston, Dewayne Robertson) when the truth is right there in front of our faces.
I am sure even the Tanny homers would feel a bit better, if they cared to admit it, if at least one of RT, Safety or OLB had been signed by now. Ftr I want OLB to be addressed with a top draft pick, but the Jets can't fill all four with top draft picks. Either at least two are filled in FA or this team will have trouble next season. I appreciate the Schillens signing, but it is open to debate whether he is a real starter. Sure, there is time. But it is also true that the clock is ticking.
