Forget about trade-ups, / trade-downs. As of right now, it looks like the big decision if we stand pat at 16 is to decide between OT Jonathan Martin (looks more & more that he will be available) and 1 of the aforementioned pass-rushing 3-4 OLBs (Perry, Upshaw, Mercilus --- Ingram is not gonna be there). For me, this is the toughest. What looks better? 1) Jonathan Martin 2) Vinny Curry......maybe maybe Andre Branch OR 1) Nick Perry 2) Kelechi Osemele or it might even be Mitchell Schwartz moving up draft boards and who most likely wont be around when our 3rd round pick is on the clock.
I think Andre Branch is a fast riser and I would not be suprised, at all, if he's the Jet's pick at 16.
IMO, we arent drafting a RT in the first 3 rounds. I really think Tanny is going all in on Ducasse and praying that the new blocking scheme along with a great OL at the OC position will help him take a step to the next level. I have a feeling we are going OLB in the 1st and then safety in the 2nd.
It's also extremely impossible to just ignore the fact that any of about 8 guys can fall into our laps at 16 and give us an incredibly difficult task of passing them up in lieu of any of the guys that are on your "standard" list of guys in positions of need that will likely be there. I just don't see how you can pass up a T-Rich to go get a passrusher when you know there will be someone pretty good available in the 2nd (or you can even trade up that 2nd pick too). How about Brockers, Coples, Kuechly, Reiff, DeCastro, maybe Floyd or even Blackmon in some alternate universe that he falls. Any of these guys would at least pose a difficult decision. Chances are pretty good that they end up being the best choice all things considered. Hard to ignore trade up/trade down hypotheticals when your idea is based on a hypothetical itself.
One of these days, you'll actually be able to offer some insight, without stating the already obvious that most,...if not all of us already know. I think we all get it ------- anything can happen before an event actually happens. So any discussion about an event, before it actually happens, is entirely circumspect and "hypothetical". Just in case you weren't aware,.....this is a website to discuss an event which has not yet happened. You toss around ideas and viewpoints. There's a ton of mock drafts out there showing who can go where or when. An "idea" has been floated about what might be available and what our needs are. I'll try not to create a "standard" list next time.
My point is that I just don't really see taking Nick Perry or Jonathan Martin at 16 a very high percentage of the time at all. That doesn't make my post or my posts in general obvious and contributing nothing to the discussion. I'm telling you that I'll be very surprised if we can't do MUCH much better than the hypotheticals that you're laying out. So to tell me to forget about hypotheticals that are more likely to matter just doesn't sit all that well with me. If you want me to play in your little sandbox...I think that taking Perry/Ingram/Upshaw/Whoever first is clearly preferable to the other alternative. That's for what it's worth (not very much imo). I also find the answer to your question very obvious in and of itself and not requiring much discussion at all. It has been covered. We need a pass rusher first and an OL would sure be a nice toy to throw in if we can swing it afterwards. Doesn't mean that an elite guy getting passed over from the OL wouldn't make me consider reversing the order. If that's what we're going to do anyway when BOTH of those guys are sitting in the board...why in the fucking world are we not just trading back and grabbing whichever them is left when they get back to us, (or even someone else that's still sitting there). It just doesn't make all that much sense to me. Terribly sorry.
After missing out on Nelson, even if the Jets get Atogwe, they've likely ignored free safety for too long and it's an important position in today's pass happy NFL. I don't know a ton about college guys so I defer to the more knowledgeable fans on here, but I was looking at the top free safety prospects and it looks like Markelle Martin is supposed to go roughly where the Jets pick in the 2nd round. Does it seem likely the Jets could go pass rusher in round 1 and then a guy like this in the second, saving RT/WR for 3rd round?
I prefer this situation to be honest... I am a firm believer in defense regardless how pass happy this league is. A Pass Rusher rd 1 and a Safety round 2 would ensure that we have a Top 5 D Its the only two missing links....
Funny enough the site I was looking at FS on has a mock draft in which the Jets go: Ingram (OLB) and Martin (FS) then Broyles (WR). Would be pretty happy with that. Guess they'd need to go OL in the 4th round and hope that Hunter can improve in a simplified Sparano blocking scheme. Draft Tek
Probably have to go option 1, even though I love Nick Perry. Martin and Curry are both starters/at least big impact players. I'm not sure Osemele won't need time before he starts. I'd also probably take option 1 if it was Cordy Glenn.
I'm also not exactly sure why I'm even taking OL in the second round. Isn't it pretty clear that our chances to be happy with our FA safety acquisitions just got destroyed when Nelson went back to the Bungals? I'm going LB/S like 90% of the time right now from where we're sitting if someone amazing doesn't fall. I'm sure we can find an interesting option for depth in the 3rd round on the OL. We can also trade up the 3/4/6, 3/4/7 picks to get back into the 2nd round once more for OL after we've addressed LB and S.
They're (hopefully) going to take the best player available on the 16 or trade down. If Jonathan Martin was there on the 16 he might well be the best player available and at a position of need. It'd be hard not to take him at that point. The Jets had 6 real problems on offense last season: 1. RT was a traffic cone. 2. Nobody who could get open deep. 3. Lots of receivers fighting for the same space as a result. 4. LG was moderately ineffective for large chunks of the season causing problems for LT who had a down season as a result. 5. QB was incapable of rising above the problems above. 6. Locker-room strife ensued. So far this off-season the Jets have maintained the RT problem. They've maintained the nobody can get deep problem. The receivers they have will still be fighting for the same space. They've maintained the LG problem. Given all of this it stands to reason that problems 5 and 6 will still be on the radar next season. Taking Martin and getting rid of problem #1 would be a big step towards solving some of the others also.
I have to discount the need at #4 somewhat. Slauson is still a developmental starter and he probably had a legitimate injury last year which isn't a super likely to recur problem. Chances are that he'll be just fine for us this year. I'd be more worried about Brandon Moore next year, however I can certainly see the merit in stockpiling a DeCastro type if the opportunity presents as well.
Dont know how i feel about perry buy i like osemele but option one is better i think curry is a good rusher and martin is a top tier prospect
