1- Michael Brockers, LSU, DE - Big defensive lines is what defense is all about 2 (Trade up) Andre Branch, Clemson, OLB/DE- This is what fucking Tanny does, sees a guy he wants, and goes out and get him (Gives up our 2nd + 3rd to make it happen) 4 Brandon Washington, Miami, G - Our future starting guard 5 Bandon Taylor, LSU, SS -Even if we get both Landry/Nelson we need safety depth 5 Vontaze Burfict, ASU, MLB - No problem risking a 5th round comp on this guy 6 Rhett Ellison, USC, TE - Can block alright, can catch alright, hes a TE 6 Gerell Robinson, Arizona State, WR - Big bodied WR, just what mark needs 7 Shawn Powell, Florida State, P- Can punt the football I think this makes our defense absolutely fucking nasty EVERYWHERE, especially if we get our FA safeties. Doesnt really add any noticeable offensive weapons, so hopefully Tanny can find a cheap HB in FA (ie Benson) That said I really love our first 3 picks.
I like it but its too heavy on the defense and at some point the Jets will need a bonafide playmaker out of the draft. It seems like MT is only getting role players and no one on offense to really help Sanchez. Since Rex has arrived they only taken Sanchez for the offense in the first round. Last year we got Wilkerson and Ellis getting Brockers might push either Devito or Ropati off the squad and that would leave us with not alot of experience at the DL. I think the DL will be sick anyway with the addition of coach Dunbar.
Don't like it, to be totally honest. I don't like the players it's built around, I hate trading up for one of them, and I think the couple guys I do like are very optimistic picks. Brockers is overrated. Personally, I don't get the fascination with him in a 34 because he seems an awful lot like a young Al Haynesworth to me, and putting him into a 34 will limit what he does best. One gap 34 like the one JJ Watt is beasting in? Sure, that seems OK, but not here. "But he's tall and has long arms and..." blah blah blah. He has sloppy technique and gets by on natural talents. On top of that, two straight years taking a 34 DE in the first round? A position that's far more important to fill with a good fit than with a high pick simply can't be the choice two years in a row. There is honestly no difference to me in taking Brockers at 16 or Kendell Reyes in the 2/3 or Mike Martin in the 3/4 as far as what they'll do for this defense short of switching to a 43. Andre Branch is the kind of player that needs to fall to have value, I wouldn't take him if there were a whole bunch of other rush LBs available. If they trade up in the 2nd, which I really don't want to see happen, it better be for Vinny Curry or someone who's falling. Branch, simply put, looks great, but is soft. He has LB skills that seem pretty natural, but won't be the guy we're looking for because he lacks a killer instinct. He's at best just another 7-8 sack guy. If they want a money player at the position, they need someone that plays with violence, that's the only kind of 34 DE that has success. It's that easy. Washington and Robinson are the optimistic picks I referenced. Wash is raw, but has too much talent to be there mid Rd 4. An athletic, potential-laden guard that can kick out and play tackle is not going to be the 10th or so guy picked at his position. Robinson is pretty much the same, but WRs are screwy sometimes. Oh, and Burfict is not going to be an NFL player. Want no part of him.
I also don't like getting a 3-4 DE, the guys we have on the roster seem capable enough. I can't speak to Brockers' ability or potential in our scheme specifically. But I still say no. Even if Devito is overrated, his back-ups held the trenches well in his absence last year. We need big bodies there not big emphasis. I don't like Burfict, our team is too unstable to break this horse. I guess you're only taking a flyer, don't know if you read about his bad pro day already. I don't really see the point in drafting a punter. Conley was about the league average in average yards netted, but he was top 5 in inside the 20, fair catches, and forcing downs. He's young, and under contract. He had his share of mistakes but overall wasn't a liability. In the 7th round, you're still competing for the rights to draft guys so while I agree that they have as good a chance to make a difference as UDFAs do, you still have to work to find those gems here. We could luck up and find some body really useful, at least on ST. Plus, this late in the draft is the spot typically reserved for Sanchez's friends.
I'm a big fan of "safe" picks early on, which usually means ol or dl. I feel like olb/wr are way too much boom or bust and more often bust, plus I don't think the olb we want will be on the board @ 16, nor our future starting rt. Plus having another big bodied beast on the DL is gonna really open up things for anyone we send at the QB, I feel like our DL as a whole is still a weakness. Pouha is only a two down NT, and nobody great plays opposite Wilkerson. Then in the second I don't see that many non project OLB. I liike chandler jones, but only as a developmental guy, in this scenario the pick would be too important for that. Curry I keep seeing looks better set for a career as a 4-3 DE. So Branch seems like the safer pick again, not a pass rushing phenom, but a guy who could get 7-10 sacks and provides versatility that RR loves. And I hope Washington is there in the 4th, but that's all I can say on that cuz he'd be a helluva pickup
I see points from both sides of your perspectives. First I just want to say that if a guy like Brockers is sitting there, he looks very close to a compulsory pick to me. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know the most about all of the specifics to look for in technique and development et al to assess how certain guys are going to fit on a certain team (scheme) all the time. What I do know is the man looks like a freaky beast that simply couldn't fail to abuse lots of OLinemen throughout his career no matter what gap/s he's attacking. I just don't see how he could really fail in our system. I also don't see how there could be Brockers AND someone else that is likely to contribute as much in an absolute sense (BPA) as him still sitting there at 16. If Brockers is there I think you just have to close your eyes and phone in the pick. It makes Tanny's job a lot harder with his 2nd and 3rd picks getting a couple guys in positions we NEED a starter in now, but he's supposed to be able to juggle that and make it happen. Given the previous, I just don't see trading away the 3rd round pick after you grab Brockers. You're trying to move up to what 30-33 with that pick? I'd much rather go 2-4-5 or even 2-4-5+something next year to get into the 33-37 range and retain that 3rd rounder BY FAR. I mean yeah Andre Branch and all that, but there are just too many guys out there at LB this year to go mortgaging our draft for one non-elite prospect, (just to clarify my definition of elite prospect, I think Ingram is about the only guy in this class that I'd readily throw that tag on). Mercilus, Perry, Branch (he could still be there 5 picks later couldn't he?), Curry, the list goes on. There are only so many LB's that can be taken in the first 35 picks. Luckily for us, the number is significantly smaller than the available useful pool. Quickly going back to Brockers....I think the whole point is that our dream is to push Ropati or Devito out of the lineup. That is the goal. With 3 DL's consisting of Mo Sione and Brockers that will be a truly fearsome unit that is going to wreak havoc on every offense in the league. When you add that to the type of backfield we should have with improved safety play and we could easily be the runaway best defense in the league if we can get a good LB too.
I know Burfict is sliding down boards, but is he really a fifth round projection now? That's a big fall for someone who was being tabbed as a potential first rounder a few months back. Other than that, swap Floyd for Brockers and I think it's perfect. I have a feeling Tanny will be doing some trading up this draft, either to pick up an extra 1st or 2nd. That way we can get playmakers on both sides of the ball.
He's become a late round pick that a lot of teams have completely removed from thier board. Sloppy, undisciplened play combined with a horrible attitude have killed his draft stock. The kid is a mess above the shoulders.
Wow, I didn't realize it was that bad. Hopefully the kid can figure it out and reward a team who takes a chance on him. He does have a lot of talent.
Not in love with it. D line is one of the strengths of this team. We could use a mid round project/depth guy, but not a starter. We have more pressing areas for our first rounder, namely OLB and receiver. The trade up for Branch tries to address OLB, but we could simply take a better OLB early and address receiver in the second at our orignal pick while keeping our third for a S who projects better than Taylor. Burfict I have in the do not draft catagory. For a team that already has locker room issues like the Jets he is exactly what we do not need in any round, as a UDFA, or a food vendor. Gerell Robinson should be long gone by the 6th round. I can easily see teams falling in love with him anywhere from the later 3rd on despite the only one season of production.
If Mike Tannenbaum got Burflict low, I'd take a chance. I see a wilder, less disciplined Lewis in him. Maybe 5,6 or 7 but not anything higher. I want Melvin Ingram and maybe a RT or OG second. Safety third and Wide out 4th.ats_suck:
i think DL is a weakness, if we get Nelson its imo the biggest weakness on the defense. Devito and Pouha are two down role players, we need someone who can wreak havoc on the line, letting our rushers go wild. Our passing situation on the DL is so weak, that even a dominant pass rusher will struggle to get penetration
I just don't think the position most often filled by just 'serviceable' players in Rex's scheme since he's been here suddenly becomes the target of two first round DPs. Dixon, Pitoitua and Devito are all solid.
It's not their responsibility to rush the passer. If they are so bad at filling their gaps so that a pass rusher can't get through, why are they so well equipped to handle the rush? The LB core is severely handicapped by their inability to play either a pass or run down effectively. They are, imo, the weakest link. We got a good year out of Pace but Maybin is a joke against the run, Scott is beyond a joke against the pass. I just don't want to see Brady run a no huddle and abuse our LBs in both games next year. That was brutal.
Adding two respectable safeties and one OLB should pretty well neutralize Brady's well-loved sub package trick against us. You just make sure you never have more than 2 scrubs (I'm calling Scott/Thomas/whoever is playing backup at Safety the scrubs in this instance) in at one time. That way there is always someone out there who can handle at least 1 TE on his own and probably another guy to address whatever the next biggest threat Brady is going to be looking at. Btw, just to say that Rex can make do with a serviceable role player at DE doesn't mean that he wouldn't reap the benefits of a big impact player. If he had a guy that does his job most of the time and then just goes and creates his own passrush independently the rest of the time that is a huge boon to any defensive scheme. It just guarantees that offenses are going to have a shitty ass time trying to address all of the pass-rushing threats on any particular down. Then teams are forced to either keep an extra guy blocking or risk potential ruin from sacks or forced interceptions.
Thats a pretty bleh draft Brockers doesnt belong as a nose tackle or an end in a 34 so that limits his value. Also like GH said we just spent a few picks helping the D line last year. I dont really understand the appeal of Andre Branch Brandon Washington pick is a great one I dont really know how effective Taylor would be, he had a good senior year but at no point in his career did he ever wow me, wasnt even the best safety on the team (BTW starting the Eric Reid as of now) Burfict we can get later, if at all
BINGO. Like Code and some other people said, they can't take Brockers, especially not as a "havoc wreaking" player. DL have assignments, and they have to stick with them. Would it be cool to have an athletic lineman to pressure on 3rd downs, yeah, but he'd be killing us on 1st and 2nd down. Side note on Brockers, he's not that good. He's not a wildly elite DT prospect like some say, but that's just my personal opinion. A lot of high end tackles bust, and he just fits that mold for me. I still think Worthy is a better player, and no one's convinced me otherwise yet. Curry is absolutely a LB, I don't have any idea why people are saying he's a better fit as a 43 end. He's got great speed as a rusher, shows good hand strength keeping tackles off of him on the rush, and seems like a dangerous open field player too. People see a bad 40 and assume things, while they inly need to see his sub 7.0 3 cone to get a good idea of what he can do. The only reason that people say Branch is a natural fit at LB is because he's soft. He likes playing in space because he's done once he engages with bigger OL.
IDK, maybe Brockers just doesn't project with us. The good news is that he'll likely be gone before he gets to us anyway, so we probably won't have to find out what Rex and Tanny would do if presented with him. What do you think of another top 10 prospect like Coples if he slides?
If Coples falls it means there's something bad there. It really wouldn't surprise me if he did fall a bit, because I can see teams just not liking the attitude/lack of dominance despite huge physical talent. That, and I have NO idea where he'd fit. It would have to be as an OLB ala Mario Williams, though that's not an easy thing to pull off at that size.
