Can Landry play the deep middle and cover tight ends? Neither of those seem to be his strong points.

I would prefer they sign Nelson, bring back Leonhard and possibly draft a safety in the mid rounds.

Start Nelson on one side and then Leonhard/Smith on the other side while bringing along the rookie.

I think Nelson would be a single step below a pro bowler on the Jets... which is a huge step above mediocre/subpar. Plus, he's really good friends with Cro.

Signing both Nelson and Landry and bringing back Leonhard on the cheap due to injury would have me salivating.

I'm still very concerned with our Lb's, though. We need to get some speed at that position along with guys who can cover TE's.

We already have 20M tied up in our two top corners and now you want us to commit around another 8-10 on two safeties? It's not happening.

The coaching staff likes Eric Smith, and he's going to be the starter, no matter what the message boards think of him. (For the record, I think he sucks).

I can see the Jets bringing Leonhard back on a one year deal for the vet min, but with the amount of holes on this team, signing the top two safeties on the market doesn't make sense.

I think Jim Leonard gets the starting spot instead of Eric Smith

As i said in an earlier post, no i do not expect that we will sign both Landry & Nelson, but what I would like are 2 new safties that can actually cover.
A man can dream can't he?

U are dreaming cause landry is a nightmare to watch in coverage.

Landry is an overpaid version of smith who looks better in pads.

    Nelson/smith/leonhard/rookie

Should be enough. Hell we have cro/revis/wilson in front of them

Nelson would be the best safety for this scheme while filling a need. Enough said

Eric Smith makes over 2 million this year, and over 3 million next year, none of which is guarenteed.

So if we could get two better safeties, for only slightly more money, and POSSIBLY(iff were lucky) on cheaper/shorter contracts than they deserve) for maybe only 2-3 million more a yr than with Smith here, it needs to strongly be considered.

Hell it could be leverage to force Smith to restructure, he's overpaid, and oversucks

Its a passing league and rex understands this... thats why he builds hiis team around the secondary and will wait patiently to get his pass rusher. Unfortunately i think this team likes eric smith, but if they want an upgrade having both landry and nelson, along with revis and cromartie would form the best secondary ib the league by far in an era where secondary is of the utmost importance. Personally im salivating if the jets get two safties. And i could see tanny doing it and would be fine tying up that kind of money in the secondary.

I hope we can sign Reggie Nelson.

EDIT: I found this on twitter, from Jake Steinberg he writes for a Jets blog. take it as you will.

"#Jets have something up their sleeve. Being told #Jets are "intrigued" about the possibility of teaming Nelson and Landry. #nyj"

Lets take one thing at a time i guess. I hope they can sign nelson first before they dabble in landry.

that would be a very impressive secondary. I still think we should just sign Nelson and then go after a RT or WR

Nelson is what we need right now. A good cover safety. Landry is a ferocious player and is a beast of a tackler but he lacks good cover skills, So if we can sign Nelson first and forth most then we should see if we can some how get Landry in here and then maybe think about dumping Eric Smith. Doubt we get both but never say never i guess.

That would be the smartest thing to do. Although there's no good receiver's or RT (outside of Winston) available.

I say where probably gonna get our tackle and receiver thru the draft.

I think the only way we get both is if landry comes cheaper than expected due to his injury problems... lets hope we can get both, nelson and landry would be a devestating combo.

Don't forget we have 10 draft picks. The team believes that Schillens can be the 2nd wide receiver. But maybe they resign BE to a cheap contract and get a right tackle who is released by a team looking for cap room.

I'd like this move, only if they cut Smith and sign Leonard back for vet min. He'd be integral in teaching them the system and signal calling for the secondary. I just don't trust Smith in that position.
