As mad as this would make me, I wouldn't actually be too bothered overall if I knew that we at least invested a 2nd or at worst 3rd round pick into bringing along the eventual heir to the Eric Smith throne. If we had a big step up over Jimmy like Nelson opposite Smith and the promise of a rookie taking over Eric's job as the first year progresses or by year 2 at worst that would be something I could handle.

I just don't see bringing back Leonhard and Smith though. One white boy too many for sure.

Don't forget about Tracy Wilson. He was a bit of a project last year -- undrafted out of the supplemental draft in August.

I'd enter the year with 5 total safeties, but I'm not the GM. I would like to re-sign Leonhard, sign Nelson, and draft a prospect mid-late (I am thinking one of the small school guys with potential). Then enter the year with Nelson and Leonhard starting. Smth as a third safety. See what Wilson and the rook can do on special teams and in emergency duty.

is there any chance we sign nelson and landry? I see nelson more as a FS and Landry as an in the box intimidator at SS

Do u want to give 4 or 5 mil a yr to an injury prone roidhead who gets lost in coverage. Just cause wed use him in the box doesn't mean teams wont pick on him

Nelson is a must get though. Absolutely a must acquire for us imo.

Nelson will get 3 to 4 mil a yr with decent guaranteed

Maybe, then the alternative is Eric Smith. A guy that was slow to begin with and decided to add muscle weight.

I think Nelson is a must get in that we have no actual starting safeties. Eric Smith is not a real safety, he's a 46 safety only.

That said, Reggie Nelson outside of one average NFL was considered, like 95% of Florida Gators, a huge bust. I would temper my expectations and understand that if he wants a lot of money it would be unwise to sign him. The Jets clearly favored Meriweather (who also isn't worth the money he got as a rare Cane bust), but losing him doesn't mean you spend a ton on a guy who a year ago was traded for a conditional 7th rounder and bemoaned as one of the worst draft busts in Jags history.

So the consensus is Nelson over Landry?

Definitely. We haven't made any big splashes yet, this would be the biggest one so far. I hope that we can get this guy a contract. But we still need to address RT, and it doesn't look like the draft has that possibility without trading up for Kalil or something crazy. I agree, that this guy is a must sign. If we get him and sign Leonard for vet min, then draft a safety in round 2, we'll be in decent shape. Hopefully we'll cut Smith and sign him for cheap as a backup or something.

Only if this guy could stay healthy.... He would be a terror in this league.

I wouldnt mind him and Nelson if he came at a very reasonable cost (low risk high reward deal).

    Hopefully we sign Nelson today.

I'd only be happy with Landry if we also signed Nelson but I don't see that happening.

  20. Interesting news about Landry visiting. The early report was that Landry was spending this whole weekend in New England. I wonder how the Jets fit into this logistically.

Between Landry & Nelson I prefer Nelson..but I think both could be signed which would be a pretty impressive pairing behind our 3 top corners.

The one hole on this team Rex has actually acknowledged this offseason has been safety. He knows crazy blitz schemes/lockdown outside coverage is all for nothing if the deep center is constantly exploited. I would not be surprised if the jets have a brand new safety pairing by the end of this coming weekend.
