The Greene number is way high, but if John Carlson just landed 5 a season, then Keller can easliy hit 6.
Marcedes Lewis got a 5 yr $35 mil contract last year after a 700 yard 10td season. That's $7mil a yr for a 27 yr old TE. Marshawn Lynch signed a 4 yr $32 mil contract after 1200 yards n 12 TD. He also carries an off-the-field baggage. These were two 'random' contracts I picked.
Read my last post. You have no idea about contracts. I mentioned "depending on" the type of yr Greene has, he can make "as much as $10mil" on the FA market. Although I agree with ur rinse and repeat idea, you wanna use 1st n 2nd rounders on RBs and TEs every two three years? We do have a list of needs I mentioned that you obviously missed.
Revis' contract will prohibit the Jets from trading. He got paid $18 mil in bonus in 2010 that was to be spread out over 7 years. Trading him after 3 yrs would leave the Jets with a cap hit of about $10+mil while his salary would be around $6 mil after the workout, and roster bonus. That's my understanding of it after reading about the contract on nyjetscap.
He's going to put the Jets in a situation where they have a huge cap hit year after year or take their medicine once and get it over with. That's how it's going to go down. He's going to hold out again and force the Jets hand.
Revis is a FA after 2013 season if he doesn't hold out. His 2013 salary cap value is only $9 mils compared to the $11+ this year. The only reason Jets would trade him would be to get some value out if him since we might lose him after 2013 for nothing. It won't be a salary cap move. You can keep him in 2013 for 9 mil or trade him for $11 mil. We'll end up paying more after trading while losing the best corner in NFL. So the trade return has to very enticing.
The contract Revis signed contains severe penalties if he holds out. If he violates that provision it lets the Jets extend his present contract a number of years at very low salaries, There is very little chance or reason for him to hold out. The contract he signed prohibits us from using any restrictions on him such as the franchise tag. If he wants a huge paycheck the simple answer for him is to leave after 2013 and hit the open market.
Revis is making $7.5 million this season. He's making $6 million next year. He's going to start working on the Jets about upgrading the contract now, to keep him among the highest paid CB's on an annual basis. Waiting until after 2013 to become a free agent isn't going to be part of his agenda, just like waiting for the original contract to play out wasn't. He's going to force the Jets hand to get another big payday in 2012 or 2013 at the outside. The voidable years in his contract aren't going to mean a lot to him, just like the fact that he had no viable alternative in 2010 didn't mean a lot to him. If Revis hadn't held out in 2010 he'd be a free agent next year looking at a $100 million dollar contract. Don't think he isn't already thinking about how to make that happen anyway.
The last 2 years I expected Revis to tell the jets he wanted a new contract before this year or else. He got the 16.1 million a year he wanted the last two years. But we have heard no noise about him wanting a redo. The simple answer may be the Jets do not have the money to do it this offseason. I think there is little chance he will hold out. He saw what it did t his season in 2010 and I don't think the Jets will give in this time. Nor do I think he like the whole contract squabble being public. If he holds out they will extend his contract and that will be that. Either he can come back and play at the salary he agreed to for the next 5 years or sit out for 5 years as that is what he will have left after the holdout penalties, I really think the Jets will be firm on that this time. Tannenbaum was really upset that he had to give in to Revis last time and give him the contract he gave him making it so the Jets cannot restrict him after 2013. Either Revis is going to not resign and enter the market or we are going to restructure likely next year and extend him long term. I don't know why he is not asking for a new deal this year. But whatever the reason he is being quiet about it. There is always the chance that they are negotiating quietly without any publicity. I guess we will see. But at this point it looks like next offseason for a contract extension or the open market in 14.
Ive been hearing that once when the TV Deal gets done, the Cap might go up to $250 million Maximum. If that does happen, then these contracts for everyone will double over time, but some players will be making a lot more than other when it does happen.
1. Plugging two starting guards with free agents is not such a sensible idea. (Tannenbaum's consistent negligence toward the OL is surely showing up nicely just in time.) You had better hope Ducasse pans out - or Jets are literally in pile of deep shit. 2. Keller should be extended but not at 6M/yr deal. If that's what he is asking, he should take a hike. *His production does not warrant that kind of salary, but then Sanchez's salary is not warranted either so... who the hell am I to say such a thing anyway...* 3. Shonn Greene will either command modest figure or get cut. With the line in place, I am more than certain Jets O can get similar (if not better) production out of Powell. And Jets should keep on bringing UDFA RBs to see how they do in training camp. (Recall Terrell Davis rule.) 4. Starting DE... is a position worth considering. I would like to see Jets land Kendall Langford with a reasonable deal (below 5M/yr, preferably). Jets currently have about 16M to spend, and even with drafts and reserves, they should be able to spend up to 9M. If Tannenbaum can land Langford at 3.5~4M deal, I would go a bit easy on Tannenbaum even if just for now. 5. Once it's all said and done, I wouldn't know where Jets would be in terms of cap situation, but I am more than certain that they wouldn't be at 138M figure as you predicted.
Im never worried about the cap as long as tanny is our GM. I do hope though, that whenever it is tanny loses his job, the new GM knows how to work the cap. Otherwise the jets will be fucked with all the back loading and maneuvering tanny has been and will probably continue to do.
Surely they wouldn't be at $138. They can't be at that place. The point I am trying to make is, even if we DON'T upgrade a position and keep the roster basically the way it is, we will be around $138. Even if Greene comes in at $5mil and Keller comes in at 4, we are still over $130 mil. About the only starting caliber RB that will be cheaper than $5mil would be a rookie. I don't mind seeing us plugging the RB role with a rookie in 2013. Thats why I think we might draft an RB on 2nd day of the draft. We will also draft a WR, safety, at least 3 LBs, and a couple of DLs. We have at least 11 picks a I believe. 7, plus one for Lowery trade, plus at least 3 additional as compensation picks. I believe we'll see a trade down early this year unless a major slip occurs.
$250mil seems unrealistic. Not saying it can't happen, but Ive heard rumors where NFL salary cap in 2014 can be easily over $150 mil, a figure much more realistic. Owners will not like the $250mil figure cuz then almost every player will demand a new contract. As a result, owners will then make less profit, increasing ticket prices. Tickets might not cost twice as much since a lot of the new money will come from the TV deal, but a small part of that burden will be put on the fans IMO.
Original post is so incorrect, does not mention the fact that Hunter and E Smith count $7 million against the cap..that ain't going to happen Also Harris will be extended currently his cap hit is around $10 million Anyone who worries about the Salary cap forgets we have the best manipulator of it in football
those stats would shock me. we'll be more focused on the running game, but greene had 250+ carries last year so it's not like he was hurting for work. 1300 yards, 12tds is top 5 production. 2 running backs hit both of those targets last year. ray rice and lesean mccoy. arian foster just signed a 5 year, 43.5 million contract. chris johnson signed a 6 year, 55 million contract last year. 10 mil/year for shonn greene is ridiculous.
Fair enough. I only used figures to show where we would stand if don't upgrade a position. I agree with you that Eric Smith and Wayne Hunter would not be on the Jets roster in 2013. Now you have TWO more starters to fill. New starters WILL cost money, and I am already accounting the 2012 and 2013 draft for four starters. Again, we can extend whoever we want to, and will have to. All that would be doing is pushing that money backwards. Currently, Harris is scheduled to make $12mil against the cap (10 base, plus 2mil of prorated signing bonus he received only 7 months ago). He's scheduled to make $13 mil in 2013, and $7mil in 2014. We may be able to push some of his base salary in to 2014 by converting it to a bonus, say 3mil. I've never doubted Tanny. And the 2013 cap situation is a piece of cake for him. If we are over by $10 mil in 2013, he'll restructure two three deals and get us a few mil below the cap. Thats not a problem for him. But we will not be heavy spenders in the FA for this season OR the next season. Our goal would be to keep the roster in tact by either signing our own FAs, or by signing mid tier FAs. That is why we really need to muster about 4 starters from this years draft ALONE if we are to sign a big name FA next off season. Then we'd have to draft at least three more starters in the next years draft so that we wouldn't have to sign our own FAs coming off rookie deals, rather replacing them with player on rookie contracts. That is one way of making things work smoothly for the long run. Reason why I created this thread was because people are going crazy on this board lately about us not signing any big name FA. We can't. Not until we find a few starters via draft. Patriots have built through the draft for years. I would say their talent level is below ours, but you can afford that when u have a future hall of famer playing QB. The sign mid tier FAs every year, and keep replacing most of their FAs through the draft. Their draft skills aren't the best however. If they had above average drafts the last 4-5 years, they would have had couple more SBs under their belt with all the chunks of draft picks they have had. Say if we let Greene, Keller, Slauson and Moore go after this season. They all should be signed for more than the vets minimum. Say we have a really good draft where we find their replacements in this up coming draft, and don't sign any FAs at all. We will get four compensation picks. That will get us 11 picks for 2013 draft as well, and a couple of those picks can be as high as 3rd rounders. You repeat the cycle in 2014 by letting your own average FAs go AFTER finding their replacements. You end up with another 2-3 compensation picks. That is how Patriots attack the off season, and it keeps them comfortably under the cap.
Foster and CJ were not FAs. They were still under contract when they were resigned. They would have been worth much more than that in the open market. Again, Marshawn Lynch signed a 4 year 32 mil contract. He had 1200 yards, 12 TDs, this year, and had rushed for less than 1200 yards, 8 TDs in 2009 and 2010 combined.
