Apparently he improved on all of his combine stats at the more recent Wisconsin Pro day ... 4.43 in the 40, 39" vertical and 10'10" broad jump. Big and physical - 6'2" 215, 18 reps with 225 ... perfect compliment to Holmes and our running game. And we know he comes from a classy family. I know we have more pressing needs, but if he's on the board for our 3rd round pick, we need to draft this kid.
There could/will be better options in Rd 3. Marvin McNutt, Juron Criner, Brian Quick & Ryan Broyles. I'm not a fan of Nepotism when it comes to drafting player, unless they present a good value. I heard when the Jets honored Al Toon last season, Rex made a comment to Nick if he would like to be a Jet. I don't have a link, it was from one of the beat writers in a blog.
I don't think asking that question is any kind of commitment, I don't know w hat kind of player Toon is but I believe BPA in all rounds. If he becomes a Jet I can see how that can be exciting but if he doesn't perform then the shine will wear thin very quickly.
Of course not, it's just Rex being Rex. I'm not a Toon hater, he's a good player, but they should be a few better options in Rd 3. A lot of posters have overrated him due to his Dad.
Nick has proven to be a quality player in his own right. He should be in the grab bag of of receivers available in the third and I would have no problems bringing him in. The rankings on all of these guys are all over the place so it very well could be that teams will be grabing some of them earlier than expect by us.
Broyles ... Way too small. We need a bigger target Criner ... Too slow (4.68) McNutt ... similar player to Toon, but not as good IMO. Quick put up great numbers ... but how good was his competiton at Appalachian State? Also, not particularly strong for such a big guy and his vertical sucks. I think Toon gives us the best value over any of those players. And yes ... I like the fact that his last name is Toon, because we shouldn't have to worry about work ethic, or off the field issues. Also ... he showed that he has some balls willing to play at Wisconsin, knowing what the expectations would be. We're not looking for a #1 ... Holmes is supposed to be that. I think Toon could fit in nicely as a solid #2.
Kellen Winslow Jr. comes to mind. As for Toon, we certainly need a WR to complement Holmes. Even if we sign Braylon, he could be a short term answer. We need to develop a WR. Maybe Toon is the guy.
No one doubts we need a WR the biggest concern is picking by name not by talent. If Toon is the BPA then def sign him but if there are better options available then no...
You can pick apart any prospect. Broyles is one of the NCAA all time receivers and isn't too small, he will be a fine NFL receiver when he's cleared medically. Nick Toon....injury prone...see I can post a negative too. Liking Toon because of the name is "nice" and "warm and fuzzy". I don't let his Dad's legacy influence my decision. I base Toon's ability on his body of work. Toon is a solid Rd 3 prospect, he's shown to make big plays and is physical. He has had some nagging injuries, but should be able to overcome them. McNutt, Quick, Toon & Broyles will all probably be drafted in Rd 3. If we draft Toon in Rd 3, I'm Ok with it, as long as we looked at other options and they were gone. I just have an issue with people wanting to draft Toon because of his dad...they're other options.
I really don't understand everyone loving Toon so much, I realize the Jet connection and sure he put up good workout numbers but he has many negatives to his game, and I don't think of him as a #2 in the NFL. He never really dominated the Big Ten at all and has always been a major injury prone guy. I don't think his stock warrants a third round selection. He's a good flier pick in hopes that you can ease him into things and plan for him to become a solid backup but straight up workout numbers don't impress me. Like WW85 said, there will be better players available
I completely agree with you. The FA pool is rapidly dwindling, making drafting a WR more of a necessity IMO. Luckily for us, this appears to be a very strong year for WR prospects.
I follow the Big Ten as close as anyone and Toon never dominated. He was a steady, solid player and when healthy made plays. His body of work isn't as extensive as some WRs due to injuries. We have to remember teams like Wisconsin (Toon), Mich St (Cunningham) & Iowa (McNutt) are generally run first teams, so these Big Ten WRs may not have as much body of work compared to other teams...even though Cunningham is Sparty's all-time leading receiver. It's a shame that Cunningham has the smallest hands in College Football, it's going to send him into Rd 4-Rd 6. I think some team will draft Toon in Rd 3, but they may be missing a better prospect.
Please dont look at just numbers, because its apparent thats what you are doing. Broyles isnt the ideal height we may be looking for, but the kid can straight up play football. Before his injury, he was a 1st round prospect. He could get picked in the 4th because of his measurables and injury, but some team is going to get a steal. As for Criner, he is one of my favorite prospects at the WR position. He can make great adjustments in the air to the ball, he has great hands (the are massive), he has ideal size and hasnt had a problem getting separation from from CB’s. This is what the combine does to people who look primarily at numbers, because before the combine, his stock was in the middle of the 2nd round based solely on his FOOTBALL PLAY (game tape and senior bowl). He is much faster than 4.68 on tape. Floyd ran a 4.42 40 yet on tape, I think Criner looks like the faster player.
Toooooooooooooooooooooon!! Thats the only reason I want him, just to hear that in the stadium one more time.
I like Nick Toon's game. In round 4, I take him. Not before then. Beyond his injury history is a guy who looks very professional as a pass catcher and route runner. He's also pretty elusive in the open field. He's probably not a number 1 receiver in this league, but that doesn't mean he would be of no use to our offense. -X-
Your point is well taken, but still ... Broyles is not a good fit for us. We already have two small starters at the position. We need a big target. Particularly in the Red Zone to repalce Plaxico ... as this was the only thing he actually did well for us. We need a big guy, who can go get it, and fight for it, and that is one of Toon's strengths and a big weakness for Holmes. (Especially since its not uncommon for our QB to miss receivers by 3 yards). Personally I have zero confidence in Patrick Turner to be that guy. Perhaps Criner can do that for us, but since there's not a huge differnce between the players, I'd like to see Toon get an opportunity here if he's on still on the board when we pick. Either way they're both slated to go somewhere in the 3rd round.
