I heard the money in Pouha's contract will go as a cap savings in 2012. Jets now have more cap room...Tanny is amazing!!!
It says that Jets have about $15 mil in cap space (more like $16.6 mil in cap space after the additional $1.6mil today from Redskins and Cowboys) not counting Mayhem and Pouha's contract. Jets currently sit at just over $15 mil in cap space, minus whatever Pouha's contract hit would be. I would say about $4 mil. So we have roughly $11 mil in space and need replacements for two safeties, Bryan Thomas, an RB, a WR and possible upgrade at RT/RG.
And don't forget the $5MM for draft picks and 2MM for a in season reserve. That doesn't leave a whole lot for all those positions you mentioned, though I think Pouha will come in at $3MM
If there is a player tanny must have he will restructure other contracts to do so. He can also borrow 2 mil against next years cap if need be. I'm never worried about our cap, we're in cap hell every year and tanny figures it out. Funny that you kept coming on here bashing our front office about our cap situation, now we have just about as much space as the pats.
The Pats have a MUCH better cap situation though, they haven't restructured anyone, and currently have Welker on the tag which likely will free up cap space when they sign him to a multi-year deal. They also have no bad contracts going forward. I hate to say it, but their F.O. has done a great job setting that up.
According to nyj cap site, Pats are slightly better off than Jets, about 1M or so at most (provided they didn't pull any GM magic yet), and Dolphags are worse off than Jets. (Standing at 10M under the cap) Jills have about 30M to shell out.
I'm not knocking them though. But they only have a little over 15 mil in space. They are however taking a hit on Ocho cinco for about 5 mil. That's a lot of money for like 13 catches. They will also need to extend Gronk probably next year. The Jets have a lot of restructures, but we always do and we've been fine. Next year the cap will go up and we will save over 15 mil when we cut ties with Scott and pace.
I meant on a whole not just the total, they have 16M without restructuring, if they guarntee some of Brady's contract for example they could open up 8M easy, Wilfork, Mankins and Mayo as well. likely Chad wil get cut which is anothe 3M. My point was more that 16M is all we're likely getting, since we have a lot of Guarantees over the next 2 ir 3 years, where the Patriots have basically none, so they could easily open up much more room if needed.
I listed 6 positions there. Three starters, two back ups, n one possible upgrade at RT. Jets also will have about 10-12 draft picks depending on comp picks (thanks for the Ellis signing btw). I'd imagine Jets would be able to find two of the three starters via draft, n couple of backups plus third stringers. Thats for $5 mil. Jets would have another $7 mil for one starter (Braylon, safety or OL) and some reserve via FA. Braylon should be cheap n Jets r probably targeting Ronnie as well. Both can be brought in for $5mil cap hit this year. And all those moves can cover pretty much all the holes Jets have. Not bad at all.
Having a player like Brady will make the entire squad look better than it is. Although I agree they r in a much better situation. However, they usually dont spend the entire cap anyways.
Actually I think you misread it. I think this implies that there's about 15 million left after taking the extension and tender into consideration. That number might also take the league-wide shared rookie signing pool that doesn't count against the cap into consideration as well. (Edit: I missed a page of posts saying the same stuff I did, but that's okay, I'll just bask in my redundancy)
They have 15 with the 1.6. http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary.html Too bad they didn't have 30, they need that to fix all the holes.
I'll agree with you that it reads like the Pouha signing will not count against the 15 mill, but I belive that may be written inccorectly. That or the numbers from Jets cap have been more than a little bit off. From the ESPN blog this morning: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/11016/gentlemen-start-your-checkbooks-2 In other words, we have less than 14 mill to spend right now. So we are in decent shape, but not great shape. No big names should be comming unless we go all in on one player, but enough there to sign a few mid tier guys to patch some holes beofre the draft.
I know that. The $15 mil includes $1.2mil for Mayhem. Thats why I only speculated on Pouhas contract in my next post, and mentioned why we are in a good shape even though we'll only have about $6-7 mil to spend in FA this year.
Don't forget that we need about $5mil to sign the 10+ draft picks, plus an additional $1-2 mil cap space for possible in season injury signings. We can only patch a couple of holes at best via FA unless other contract moves are done. We still don't have a kicker yet either, which I forgot.
My guess is the Jets are looking at about 5 to 6 million in spendable cap space for free agency. Before the Pouha signing: 14.1 million give or take a bit. Pouha likely hit 4 million or so: 10.1 million Cheater bonus 1.6 million: 11.7 million Rookies 4 million or so: 7.7 million Contingency fund 2 million: 5.7 million They might have a bit more than that but not much more. I think they're going to be very minor players in free agency. Pouha was probably the biggest signing they will make. I don't think the Jets will go into the season without about 1.5-2 million available in case something bad happens and they need to trade for somebody before the deadline.
Tannenbaum will find a nifty way to backload contracts in order to improve the roster. Now I don't think Vincent Jackson or Mario Williams are headed to Florham park..but i expect acouple mid range signings like Reggie Nelson at safety and Laurent Robinson at # 2 WR. After that we'll likely only see a few vet minimum stop gaps.
All the guaranteed contracts this year are pulling on the Jets like a lead weight. Hunter for $2.45 million, Scott for $4.2 million, etc. The Jets are going to have real issues improving the team while they pay for last year's cap fixes and a bad decision (twice) on Hunter.
