i guess i'm thinking that he's not really an impact guy. he's an upgrade in 3rd down situations. i understand he can catch passes on any down.. but assuming he's running 1/2 down, he's not a much better runner than greene. but again, if we have no place better to spend the 3 million, tolbert would be an upgrade over greene.
He would be signed and intended as a 3rd down back. Why i think he holds so much value is because he is unlike any player we have on our roster. He catches passes for days, pass blocks, moves the chains on a consistent basis, is a hard runner, and IMO thats what we need on this roster to help make Sanchez more comfortable with this offense.
i guess i assumed that tolbert would be the lead guy because he is better than greene. tolbert seems like a better fit for a team with a solid #1, and he would come in as a 3rd down back. right now, i'm thinking we need to find a #1, so greene can become the complement rather than the feature guy. i just think a tolbert/greene backfield seems a bit lackluster. if signing tolbert doesn't get in the way of drafting a rb early.. i am 100% behind it.
the thing with signing tolbert would is that we are getting a similar player to greene when we need a "feature" back (which i dont think we need what so ever...greene/mcknight would be a good 1-2 punch)...i would def go after a quicker rb, not that i am lobbying for bush or anything
He'd be useful for the first 4-6 weeks of the season when Greene doesn't look like he's ever seen a football before. He's young enough and knows where the end zone is. However his receiving+rushing stats are less than Greene's rushing only for 2012 - he'd have to come at the right price.
of course his rushing stats are less than Greene's in 2012 for a few reasons. 1) he played on a team that had Gates, Jackson, Rivers, Floyd, Brown (really came on late). They are a pass first team; how many more receptions did he have than Greene? Thats my point. He would be utilized diffrently in NY. Also, he wasnt the STARTER like Greene. Ryan Matthews was. That said, if we could ink this guy for 2-3 per, I take him; after we have the Saftey postion set (we dont need RT help yet, and wont due to cap, Hunter will have a rebound year), and OLB (draft).
tolbert is a complete back. He's not an upgrade athletically over greene but he is not a step down either. Trade greene to the chargers to back up matthews. Chargers want matthews to be their #1 anyway and tolbert deserves a shot as a #1 in a ground and pound. Tolbert being in the game also isn't a tipoff to the play calling the way greene is.
NO WAY I TRADE GREENE! I like Tolbert but would not let go of SG for him. Don't forget we also have Powell on the roster and McKnight hopefull will get more opportunities with LT gone. All the Ronnie Brown whispers are making me ill.
Agreed. People keep talking negatively about Greene, when he had his first 1000+ yard season last year, despite Schotty not establishing the run in several games. We don't need to make any major moves at this position.
Thank you. Some people are nuts with that kind of talks. We don't need Tolbert either. Have plenty of other holes to fill with the $6-7 mil we'll have left after accounting for draft signings and season reserve.
What you guys are missing is that we have no efficient 3rd down running back. McKnight cannot pass block and Powell was never really a receiving option in college. Bringing in a good 3rd down RB adds an entirely new dimension to our offense. If we want to pass efficiently, we need to have a reliable back on our roster who can block and catch passes. LT did this for us in 2010 and it worked exceptionally, we need a RB who can do the same if not more in order to have a successful season.
Not only that, but how many times has Greene been banged up throught the course of the year? He is ALWAYS injured. If we a RB that can take 10-15 carries and go in on passing downs and let Greene have a break every once in a while, it would do our running game wonders. If Greene gets injured (which is likely)... Who do we have? Joe McKnight and Powell? Barring an unforeseen break out, we are screwed. Personally, I think Tolbert is a better RB than what we currently have on our roster. Im hoping for either T Rich or Doug Martin, but I dont think either will happen, so if we signed him I would be all for it.
Maybe we should go after Green-Ellis? The guys real solid and with him Greene and McKnight we'd be pretty strong at RB.
We don't need Running Backs in my opinion. We have Greene and McKnight. McKnight has earned the right to be in the spot Ladanian left.
We are a ground and pound team. Period. That is the way Rex wants to play and that is the way this team is built. The Jets live off of the ground game- can control the clock, let the defense take a break, keep the opposing QB off the field, and most importantly, Sanchez’s best friend is a good ground game. Greene is injury prone, McKnight has trouble picking up blitz and Powell is less than unproven. IMO, I do not feel comfortable at all entering the season with that backfield. If Greene gets injured (which is probable), what is going to happen to our backfield? I dont have faith in either of McKnight or Powell to receive a significant number of carries... RB is probably the most overlooked hole that this team has.
bro, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! Please show me in his statmemt about the Jets where Mike Tolbert said he wont come to NYJ? Having troubble finding it? THATS BECASUE HE NEVER SAID THAT YOU SLANDERING POS!
i don't get how mcknight has earned anything. as a rb, he has had very little success in his 2 years. why are people so comfortable with mcknight?
